"summary": "Channel-based team messaging platform from Salesforce with threads, huddles, canvases, workflow automation and an extensive bot and app API",
"description": "Slack is a workplace messaging platform, owned by Salesforce since 2021, and a central product in the collaboration and communication category. Conversations are organised into public and private channels, direct messages and threads, with search across history, file sharing, emoji reactions and status. Huddles provide audio and video calls with screen sharing, canvases hold collaborative documents inside channels, lists track tasks, and Workflow Builder automates routine steps without code. Slack Connect extends channels across organisations.\n\nFor developers it is one of the most integrated platforms: the Web API, Events API, Socket Mode, Block Kit UI framework and Bolt SDKs (JavaScript, Python, Java) support bots, slash commands and interactive messages, and the app directory lists thousands of integrations from GitHub and Jira to Google Drive and Zoom. Monitoring systems, CI pipelines and research clusters commonly post alerts into channels, and AI assistants are increasingly delivered as Slack apps.\n\nPlans start with a free tier that limits message history and integrations, then Pro, Business+ and Enterprise Grid, priced per active user, with enterprise plans adding compliance exports, data loss prevention and identity management.\n\nTrade-offs: the service is cloud-only with no self-hosting, free workspaces lose access to older history, constant notifications can fragment attention, costs scale with headcount, and exports of workspace data are restricted by plan and by admin policy. Organisations already standardised on Microsoft 365 often use Teams instead because it is bundled.",

Zoom centres on meetings with chat as a secondary feature, and Google Workspace's Chat is tied to the Google suite.",
