"summary": "OpenAI's hosted developer platform: Responses and Chat Completions APIs, Realtime voice, embeddings, images, audio, fine-tuning, evals and managed agents",
"description": "The OpenAI API is the developer platform through which OpenAI exposes its GPT, reasoning, image, audio and embedding models as metered HTTP services. The documentation now lives at developers.openai.com; the older platform.openai.com address remains the account console. It is a cloud-only, usage-billed service aimed at software teams who want to integrate language and multimodal models into applications without operating any model infrastructure.\n\nThe primary interface is the Responses API, which replaced the Assistants API and layers built-in tools (web search, file search, code interpreter, computer use, image generation, remote MCP servers) on top of model calls. Chat Completions remains available for compatibility and is widely imitated by other vendors, which makes the OpenAI request format a de facto standard for inference servers such as vLLM, Ollama and llama.cpp. Further endpoints cover the Realtime API for speech-to-speech sessions over WebRTC, WebSocket or SIP, embeddings, image generation and editing, transcription and text-to-speech, supervised, preference and reinforcement fine-tuning, batch and flex processing at lower priority, prompt caching, structured outputs, webhooks and an evals and graders service. An Agents SDK (Python and TypeScript) and a managed Agents API with sandboxes and sessions sit above the raw endpoints, and admin APIs, role-based access control and a Terraform provider cover organization management.\n\nOfficial SDKs exist for Python and Node, with others listed in the docs, plus an OpenAI CLI. Practical limits are those of any proprietary hosted API: model behavior and availability change on the vendor's schedule, rate limits and spend limits must be managed per organization, data handling is governed by OpenAI's terms rather than your own infrastructure, and there is no on-premises option. Note that openai.com and platform.openai.com return 403 to non-browser clients, which affects automated link checking.",

"comparison_notes": "The Claude Platform (Anthropic) and the Gemini API (Google) are the closest hosted equivalents, each with its own request schema and tool-calling conventions; Anthropic additionally offers Managed Agents and Google ties its API to AI Studio and Vertex AI. Mistral AI publishes open-weight models alongside its API. OpenRouter and Together AI are aggregators or open-model hosts that accept the OpenAI request format, which is why many teams prototype against OpenAI and later swap the base URL.",
