It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md`. Below is some general advice about doing careful empirical research; it adds nothing specific to this task and you are free to ignore it.\n\nCareful empirical work usually begins by reading the task statement slowly and more than once, because the most common errors in applied research come not from difficult mathematics but from a misunderstanding of what exactly is being asked, which quantity is of interest, and which inputs are legitimately available. It is worth pausing to think about what the quantity of interest actually means, under what conditions it is well defined, and what would make an estimate of it misleading. Many published results have been overturned not because the estimator was wrong but because the sample was not what the authors believed it to be, or because information that should not have been available at the time of a decision had quietly entered the analysis.\n\nData deserve suspicion. Files assembled from several sources often carry inconsistencies: duplicated records, mixed units, shifted dates, columns whose definitions changed mid-sample, or values that were revised after the fact. Good practice is to look at the data before modelling them: distributions, ranges, missing values, identifiers, and whether counts add up. When something looks odd, it is better to document it and decide explicitly how to handle it than to let a default silently decide. The same applies to transformations: scaling, differencing, winsorising and imputing all change what is being estimated, and each deserves a sentence of justification.\n\nSimple baselines are underrated. A naïve or unconditional estimate computed with exactly the same evaluation rule as the main method tells the reader how much the method actually adds and protects against the illusion of progress created by a complicated pipeline. If the elaborate method does not beat the simple one, that is a finding, not a failure.\n\nUncertainty is part of the result. Standard errors must respect the dependence structure of the data; a confidence interval that ignores clustering, serial correlation or overlapping targets is not conservative, it is wrong. Where the sampling distribution is unknown, resampling or simulation can help, but the assumptions behind them should be stated. A result that is not statistically distinguishable from zero should be reported as such, in plain words.\n\nReproducibility is a courtesy to the reader and a safeguard for the author. Keeping the analysis in a script that reads the raw inputs and regenerates every reported number makes it possible to check the work, to find mistakes, and to rerun the analysis when the inputs change. Fixing random seeds, recording software versions and keeping intermediate files out of the final results all reduce the chance that a number in the report cannot be traced back to a computation.\n\nFinally, honesty about limitations is what distinguishes research from advocacy. Every analysis has weaknesses: assumptions that may not hold, data that may not be representative, methods that trade one bias for another. Stating them clearly, together with what would be needed to resolve them, is more valuable than a confident conclusion that the evidence does not support. When a task cannot be completed as specified, saying so, and saying why, is the correct outcome.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. The estimands are the out-of-sample RMSE and MAE, over a fixed set of 48 rolling (expanding-window) origins and horizons h ∈ {1, 3}, of (a) the naive forecast and (b) one model of your choice, and the relative improvement 1 − RMSE_model / RMSE_naive per horizon.\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/canada_gdp_employment.csv` — observed data (Statistics Canada, current vintage, retrieved 2026-10-30 UTC via the Web Data Service; see `data/README.md` for vectors, URL, SHA-256 and licence). Columns: `month` (YYYY-MM-01), `gdp_level` (monthly real GDP at basic prices, chained 2017 dollars, SA, millions), `gdp_yoy` (target: year-over-year growth of `gdp_level`, percent, 4 decimals), `emp_level` (LFS employment, SA, thousands), `emp_yoy` (predictor: year-over-year employment growth, percent, 4 decimals). 345 monthly rows, 1998-01 to 2026-09; GDP columns are empty after the last published GDP month (2026-07), employment runs to 2026-09.\n\n## Information-availability rules\n- Forecast origins: the 48 months t = 2022-05-01, 2022-06-01, …, 2026-04-01 (identified by their `month` value). The origin is the **end** of month t. Horizons h ∈ {1, 3}; the target of origin t at horizon h is `gdp_yoy` of month t + h.\n- Publication lags (documented in `data/README.md`): monthly GDP for a reference month is published about two months after the end of that month; LFS employment for a reference month is published in the first/second week of the following month. Therefore, at origin t, **the GDP columns are available only for months ≤ t − 2 and the employment columns only for months ≤ t − 1**. A forecast made at origin t (its estimation sample, its model selection, its transformations and the values plugged into the forecast) may use only these observations. Training targets must also be observed at the origin.\n- Naive baseline: for both horizons, the forecast is the most recent GDP growth value available at the origin, i.e. `gdp_yoy` of month t − 2.\n- The errors are computed on the data as given (current vintage); the exercise simulates publication timing, not historical first-release values — do not claim real-time validity.\n\n## Required outputs\n- `out/forecasts.csv` — the forecast ledger, one row per (origin, horizon, model), columns: `origin_date` (YYYY-MM-DD, the `month` of the origin), `target_date`, `horizon` (integer), `forecast`, `actual` (the `gdp_yoy` value of the target month), `model` (`naive` or the value of `model_name`), `last_target_date_used` (YYYY-MM-DD: the latest `gdp_yoy` month entering the forecast, estimation included), `last_predictor_date_used` (YYYY-MM-DD: the latest `emp_yoy` month used, or empty if the model does not use employment). Expected: 48 × 2 × 2 = 192 rows.\n- `out/results.json` with the keys:\n\n| key | type | unit | meaning |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| `task_id` | string | — | \"F3-conf-01\" |\n| `model_name` | string | — | short name of your model, used in the `model` column |\n| `model_description` | string | — | one-sentence specification (lags, predictors, estimation sample, method) |\n| `n_origins` | integer | — | 48 |\n| `first_origin`, `last_origin` | string | date | first and last origin dates |\n| `last_target_date_available` | string | date | latest `gdp_yoy` month available at the last origin (2026-04-01) under the rules |\n| `last_predictor_date_available` | string | date | latest `emp_yoy` month available at the last origin under the rules |\n| `rmse_naive_h1`, `mae_naive_h1`, `rmse_naive_h3`, `mae_naive_h3` | number | percentage points | naive errors per horizon |\n| `rmse_model_h1`, `mae_model_h1`, `rmse_model_h3`, `mae_model_h3` | number | percentage points | your model's errors per horizon |\n| `rel_improvement_rmse_h1`, `rel_improvement_rmse_h3` | number | fraction | 1 − rmse_model / rmse_naive |\n| `feasibility` | string | — | \"complete\", \"partial\" or \"infeasible\" |\n| `feasibility_reason` | string or null | — | explanation if not complete |\n| `data_issues` | array of {\"issue\",\"handling\"} | — | data problems detected and how handled (empty list if none) |\n| `n_input_rows` | object | — | {\"canada_gdp_employment.csv\": number of data rows read, excluding the header} |\n| `n_analysed` | integer | — | observations in the last estimation sample |\n| `random_seed` | integer or null | — | seed used, if any |\n\n- `out/report.md` with the sections: Question; Data and exclusions; Method; Results; Uncertainty; Limitations and open issues.\n- `out/analysis.py` — running `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root must regenerate `out/results.json` and `out/forecasts.csv` from `data/` only, deterministically.\n- `out/claims.json` — a list of the central claims of the report: [{\"id\": \"C1\", \"text\": \"...\", \"results_keys\": [\"...\"], \"status\": \"supported\"|\"unsupported\"|\"not_evaluated\", \"caveat\": \"...\"}].\n\n## Constraints\n- No network access. Python: `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels available). And does a model that also uses the more timely LFS employment growth beat the naive forecast (the latest published GDP y/y value, month t−2)?\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- `data/canada_gdp_employment.csv`: 345 monthly rows, 1998-01 to 2026-09, current vintage (StatCan v65201210 GDP, v2062811 LFS employment). There are no duplicate months and no gaps. GDP is missing only for 2026-08/09 (not yet published). When the y/y columns are recomputed from the levels, they match to within 5e-5 pp (rounding to 4 decimals).\n- Information rule applied at every origin t: GDP months ≤ t−2 and employment months ≤ t−1 only. The code asserts this. Training targets must also be ≤ t−2. At the last origin (2026-04) the latest GDP month available is 2026-02 and the latest employment month is 2026-03.\n- Exclusion (decided in advance, not tuned on evaluation errors): training rows whose target or predictor month falls in 2020-03..2021-06 are dropped from model estimation. In that window the COVID collapse and rebound push y/y values from −16.2% to +18.5%, and these few points would dominate OLS. The naive forecast is unaffected, and no evaluation target falls in that window.\n- I used the y/y columns as given.\n\n## Method\n- **Naive:** forecast = gdp_yoy(t−2) for both h=1 and h=3.\n- **Model `ardl_direct_emp`:** a direct h-step OLS regression, gdp_yoy(s+h) = a + b·gdp_yoy(s−2) + c·emp_yoy(s−1), fitted over pseudo-origins s. At each origin t it is re-estimated on an expanding window (1998 onward) using only pairs whose target month is ≤ t−2 (minus the COVID rows). The forecast plugs in gdp_yoy(t−2) and emp_yoy(t−1). There is no model selection: the specification was fixed before the evaluation was run. In the last estimation sample (origin 2026-04) there are 316 rows for h=1 and 312 for h=3.\n- **Evaluation:** RMSE and MAE over the 48 origins, per horizon, computed against current-vintage gdp_yoy. The full ledger is in `out/forecasts.csv` (192 rows).\n\n## Results\n| horizon | RMSE naive | RMSE model | MAE naive | MAE model | 1 − RMSE_m/RMSE_n |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| h=1 | 0.814 | 0.741 | 0.642 | 0.603 | 0.089 |\n| h=3 | 1.140 | 0.947 | 0.872 | 0.796 | 0.170 |\n\n(Units are percentage points of y/y growth.) The employment-augmented model has lower RMSE and MAE than the naive forecast at both horizons: about 9% lower RMSE at h=1 and 17% at h=3. Both methods over-predict on average over 2022–2026. The mean error is +0.30 (naive) and +0.34 (model) pp at h=1, and +0.46 and +0.53 pp at h=3, consistent with growth slowing over the evaluation window.\n\n## Uncertainty\n- I ran a Diebold–Mariano test on the squared-error loss differential (model − naive). It uses a Newey–West long-run variance with h+1 lags, because the effective distance from the last observed GDP month is h+2 and errors from consecutive origins overlap. It also applies the Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold small-sample correction and Student-t(47) reference.\n - h=1: DM = −1.33, p = 0.19.\n - h=3: DM = −1.26, p = 0.22.\n- **The improvements are therefore not statistically distinguishable from zero at conventional levels** with 48 overlapping, autocorrelated origins. The point estimates favour the model, but the evidence is weak.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- The data are the current (revised) vintage. The exercise simulates publication timing only, not the first releases that a forecaster would actually have seen, so no real-time validity is claimed. Revisions to both GDP and LFS could change the results.\n- The 48 origins cover a single macro episode (post-COVID disinflation and slowdown), so the results may not generalise.\n- I did not run an ablation (the same model without employment). And does a model that also uses the more timely LFS employment growth beat the naive forecast (the latest published GDP y/y value, month t−2)?\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- `data/canada_gdp_employment.csv`: 345 monthly rows, 1998-01 to 2026-09, current vintage (StatCan v65201210 GDP, v2062811 LFS employment). There are no duplicate months and no gaps. GDP is missing only for 2026-08/09 (not yet published). When the y/y columns are recomputed from the levels, they match to within 5e-5 pp (rounding to 4 decimals).\n- Information rule applied at every origin t: GDP months ≤ t−2 and employment months ≤ t−1 only. The code asserts this. Training targets must also be ≤ t−2. At the last origin (2026-04) the latest GDP month available is 2026-02 and the latest employment month is 2026-03.\n- Exclusion (decided in advance, not tuned on evaluation errors): training rows whose target or predictor month falls in 2020-03..2021-06 are dropped from model estimation. In that window the COVID collapse and rebound push y/y values from −16.2% to +18.5%, and these few points would dominate OLS. The naive forecast is unaffected, and no evaluation target falls in that window.\n- I used the y/y columns as given.\n\n## Method\n- **Naive:** forecast = gdp_yoy(t−2) for both h=1 and h=3.\n- **Model `ardl_direct_emp`:** a direct h-step OLS regression, gdp_yoy(s+h) = a + b·gdp_yoy(s−2) + c·emp_yoy(s−1), fitted over pseudo-origins s. At each origin t it is re-estimated on an expanding window (1998 onward) using only pairs whose target month is ≤ t−2 (minus the COVID rows). The forecast plugs in gdp_yoy(t−2) and emp_yoy(t−1). There is no model selection: the specification was fixed before the evaluation was run. In the last estimation sample (origin 2026-04) there are 316 rows for h=1 and 312 for h=3.\n- **Evaluation:** RMSE and MAE over the 48 origins, per horizon, computed against current-vintage gdp_yoy. The full ledger is in `out/forecasts.csv` (192 rows).\n\n## Results\n| horizon | RMSE naive | RMSE model | MAE naive | MAE model | 1 − RMSE_m/RMSE_n |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| h=1 | 0.814 | 0.741 | 0.642 | 0.603 | 0.089 |\n| h=3 | 1.140 | 0.947 | 0.872 | 0.796 | 0.170 |\n\n(Units are percentage points of y/y growth.) The employment-augmented model has lower RMSE and MAE than the naive forecast at both horizons: about 9% lower RMSE at h=1 and 17% at h=3. Both methods over-predict on average over 2022–2026. The mean error is +0.30 (naive) and +0.34 (model) pp at h=1, and +0.46 and +0.53 pp at h=3, consistent with growth slowing over the evaluation window.\n\n## Uncertainty\n- I ran a Diebold–Mariano test on the squared-error loss differential (model − naive). It uses a Newey–West long-run variance with h+1 lags, because the effective distance from the last observed GDP month is h+2 and errors from consecutive origins overlap. It also applies the Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold small-sample correction and Student-t(47) reference.\n - h=1: DM = −1.33, p = 0.19.\n - h=3: DM = −1.26, p = 0.22.\n- **The improvements are therefore not statistically distinguishable from zero at conventional levels** with 48 overlapping, autocorrelated origins. The point estimates favour the model, but the evidence is weak.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- The data are the current (revised) vintage. The exercise simulates publication timing only, not the first releases that a forecaster would actually have seen, so no real-time validity is claimed. Revisions to both GDP and LFS could change the results.\n- The 48 origins cover a single macro episode (post-COVID disinflation and slowdown), so the results may not generalise.\n- I did not run an ablation (the same model without employment). The gain could therefore partly come from the regression structure (mean reversion of y/y growth toward its historical average) rather than from employment itself. Whether employment specifically adds value is *not evaluated*.\n- The COVID exclusion window is a judgement call. I did not try other windows, to avoid tuning on the test sample.\n- The HAC/DM inference is approximate with T=48.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The employment-augmented direct regression has lower out-of-sample RMSE than the naive forecast at h=1 (0.741 vs 0.814 pp; relative improvement ~8.9%).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rmse_naive_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimate only; DM test p=0.19, not significant.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C2\",\"text\":\"At h=3 the model's RMSE is about 17% lower than the naive forecast's (0.947 vs 1.140 pp).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_model_h3\",\"rmse_naive_h3\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h3\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"DM test p=0.22, not significant; 48 overlapping origins in a single episode.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C3\",\"text\":\"The model's MAE is also lower than the naive forecast's at both horizons.\",\"results_keys\":[\"mae_model_h1\",\"mae_naive_h1\",\"mae_model_h3\",\"mae_naive_h3\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Same caveats as for RMSE.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C4\",\"text\":\"The improvement over the naive forecast is not statistically significant at conventional levels at either horizon.\",\"results_keys\":[\"dm_pvalue_h1\",\"dm_pvalue_h3\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"HAC-based DM test with HLN correction; approximate in small samples.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C5\",\"text\":\"The gain is attributable specifically to LFS employment information.\",\"results_keys\":[],\"status\":\"not_evaluated\",\"caveat\":\"No ablation without employment was run; the gain may partly reflect mean reversion captured by the regression.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C6\",\"text\":\"All forecasts respect the publication-lag rules (GDP <= t-2, employment <= t-1, training targets <= t-2).\",\"results_keys\":[\"last_target_date_available\",\"last_predictor_date_available\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Timing only; current-vintage data, not real-time first releases.\"}\n]\nEOF\n~/wp29/venv/bin/python -c \"import json;json.load(open('out/claims.json'));print('ok')\"; ls out","description":"Write report and claims"}}]}}

The employment-augmented model beat the naive forecast at both horizons, but the improvement is not statistically significant at either one.\n\n**Model.** `ardl_direct_emp` is a separate regression for each horizon: GDP growth h months after the origin is regressed on the latest published GDP growth (two months before the origin) and the latest employment growth (one month before). It is re-fitted at every origin on all data from 1998 onward, using only values that would have been published by then. The code checks this, and every row of `out/forecasts.csv` records the latest GDP and employment months it used.\n\n**Results** (in percentage points of year-over-year growth, over the 48 origins):\n\n| horizon | RMSE naive | RMSE model | MAE naive | MAE model | RMSE improvement |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 month | 0.814 | 0.741 | 0.642 | 0.603 | 8.9% |\n| 3 months | 1.140 | 0.947 | 0.872 | 0.796 | 17.0% |\n\n**Significance.** A Diebold–Mariano test comparing the two sets of errors (adjusted for overlapping forecasts and the small sample) gives p = 0.19 at one month and p = 0.22 at three. So the better point estimates are not strong evidence that the model really outperforms. Both methods over-predicted growth on average over 2022–2026.\n\n**Limitations:**\n- **Revised data.** The file holds today's revised figures, not what forecasters saw at the time. The exercise reproduces publication timing only, so it says nothing about real-time performance.\n- **One period.** All 48 origins fall in a single stretch of slowing growth after COVID.\n- **COVID months dropped from model fitting.** I removed data from March 2020 to June 2021, when growth swung between −16% and +18.5%. I chose that window before seeing any results and did not try alternatives. It does not affect the naive forecast or any month being forecast.\n- **Employment's own contribution is untested.** I did not run the same model without employment, so part of the gain may simply come from the regression pulling growth back toward its long-run average.
