It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md`.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. We also want (c) the exact SD of β̂ and (d) E[se_conv], and whether the conventional interval reaches its nominal coverage.\n\n## Data and exclusions\n`data/design.csv` has 30 rows, no missing values, all σ_i > 0, and the index runs 1–30. Nothing was excluded and no data issues were found. σ_i rises with |x_i| (roughly 0.60 near x = 0 up to 1.79 at x = 1.99), so the largest error variances sit at the high-leverage points.\n\n## Method\n- Exact SD (c): β̂ = A y with A = (X'X)⁻¹X', so Var(β̂₁) = Σ a₁ᵢ² σᵢ². This is computed analytically, with no simulation.\n- Monte Carlo: R = 2000 replications using `numpy.random.default_rng(20261030)`. Each replication redraws only ε; x and σ stay fixed. In every replication:\n - β̂ is computed by OLS.\n - se_conv = sqrt(s²·[(X'X)⁻¹]₂₂), with s² = RSS/(n−2).\n - se_HC1 = sqrt(n/(n−2) · Σ a₁ᵢ² eᵢ²), i.e. the HC0 sandwich scaled by n/(n−2).\n- Both intervals use t_{0.975}(28) = 2.0484. Coverage is the share of replications whose interval contains 0.5.\n- Undercoverage rule: coverage_conv < 0.95 − 3·sqrt(0.95·0.05/2000), i.e. below 0.9354.\n- Running `out/analysis.py` regenerates `out/results.json` deterministically. Two runs produced identical output.\n\n## Results\n| Quantity | Value |\n|---|---|\n| Coverage, conventional CI | 0.844 |\n| Coverage, HC1 CI | 0.902 |\n| SD(β̂), exact | 0.2680 |\n| SD(β̂), Monte Carlo (ddof=1) | 0.2696 |\n| Mean se_conv | 0.1903 |\n| Mean se_HC1 (supplementary) | 0.2408 |\n\nThe conventional SE is badly biased downward. Its mean (0.190) is about 29% below the true SD (0.268). The exact E[se_conv²] = 0.0373 gives sqrt ≈ 0.193, which agrees with the Monte Carlo mean once Jensen's inequality is taken into account. As a result, the conventional interval covers only about 84.4% of the time against the nominal 95%. **The conventional interval does not attain nominal coverage** (`conventional_ci_undercovers = true`). HC1 does much better (90.2%) but still undercovers: on average it also falls short of the true SD, as is typical for HC0/HC1 at n = 30 with high-leverage points.\n\n## Uncertainty\n- Binomial Monte Carlo SE at the nominal p = 0.95: 0.0049. This is the value used in the decision rule.\n- MCSE at the estimates: conventional 0.0081 (approx. 95% MC interval 0.828–0.860); HC1 0.0066 (approx. 0.889–0.915).\n- The conventional shortfall (0.106) is about 22 MCSEs, so the conclusion is not sensitive to Monte Carlo noise.\n- The MC SD of β̂ (0.2696) is within sampling error of the exact value (0.2680). The relative SE of a sample SD with R = 2000 is about 1.6%.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- The results apply only to this single fixed design, with normal errors and one seed. Other designs or error distributions would give different coverage.\n- R = 2000 limits precision to about ±0.8 percentage points on each coverage estimate.\n- (d) was estimated by Monte Carlo as the task requires. We also want (c) the exact SD of β̂ and (d) E[se_conv], and whether the conventional interval reaches its nominal coverage.\n\n## Data and exclusions\n`data/design.csv` has 30 rows, no missing values, all σ_i > 0, and the index runs 1–30. Nothing was excluded and no data issues were found. σ_i rises with |x_i| (roughly 0.60 near x = 0 up to 1.79 at x = 1.99), so the largest error variances sit at the high-leverage points.\n\n## Method\n- Exact SD (c): β̂ = A y with A = (X'X)⁻¹X', so Var(β̂₁) = Σ a₁ᵢ² σᵢ². This is computed analytically, with no simulation.\n- Monte Carlo: R = 2000 replications using `numpy.random.default_rng(20261030)`. Each replication redraws only ε; x and σ stay fixed. In every replication:\n - β̂ is computed by OLS.\n - se_conv = sqrt(s²·[(X'X)⁻¹]₂₂), with s² = RSS/(n−2).\n - se_HC1 = sqrt(n/(n−2) · Σ a₁ᵢ² eᵢ²), i.e. the HC0 sandwich scaled by n/(n−2).\n- Both intervals use t_{0.975}(28) = 2.0484. Coverage is the share of replications whose interval contains 0.5.\n- Undercoverage rule: coverage_conv < 0.95 − 3·sqrt(0.95·0.05/2000), i.e. below 0.9354.\n- Running `out/analysis.py` regenerates `out/results.json` deterministically. Two runs produced identical output.\n\n## Results\n| Quantity | Value |\n|---|---|\n| Coverage, conventional CI | 0.844 |\n| Coverage, HC1 CI | 0.902 |\n| SD(β̂), exact | 0.2680 |\n| SD(β̂), Monte Carlo (ddof=1) | 0.2696 |\n| Mean se_conv | 0.1903 |\n| Mean se_HC1 (supplementary) | 0.2408 |\n\nThe conventional SE is badly biased downward. Its mean (0.190) is about 29% below the true SD (0.268). The exact E[se_conv²] = 0.0373 gives sqrt ≈ 0.193, which agrees with the Monte Carlo mean once Jensen's inequality is taken into account. As a result, the conventional interval covers only about 84.4% of the time against the nominal 95%. **The conventional interval does not attain nominal coverage** (`conventional_ci_undercovers = true`). HC1 does much better (90.2%) but still undercovers: on average it also falls short of the true SD, as is typical for HC0/HC1 at n = 30 with high-leverage points.\n\n## Uncertainty\n- Binomial Monte Carlo SE at the nominal p = 0.95: 0.0049. This is the value used in the decision rule.\n- MCSE at the estimates: conventional 0.0081 (approx. 95% MC interval 0.828–0.860); HC1 0.0066 (approx. 0.889–0.915).\n- The conventional shortfall (0.106) is about 22 MCSEs, so the conclusion is not sensitive to Monte Carlo noise.\n- The MC SD of β̂ (0.2696) is within sampling error of the exact value (0.2680). The relative SE of a sample SD with R = 2000 is about 1.6%.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- The results apply only to this single fixed design, with normal errors and one seed. Other designs or error distributions would give different coverage.\n- R = 2000 limits precision to about ±0.8 percentage points on each coverage estimate.\n- (d) was estimated by Monte Carlo as the task requires. The analytic E[se_conv²] is reported only as a check.\n- HC2/HC3 or wild-bootstrap intervals, which would probably improve on HC1 here, were not part of the task and were not evaluated.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The conventional nominal-95% OLS interval does not attain nominal coverage under this design: estimated coverage 0.844, more than 3 binomial MCSEs below 0.95.\",\"results_keys\":[\"coverage_conventional\",\"conventional_ci_undercovers\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Specific to this fixed design, normal errors, R=2000, seed 20261030.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C2\",\"text\":\"The HC1 interval has better coverage (0.902) than the conventional one but still undercovers at n=30.\",\"results_keys\":[\"coverage_hc1\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"MCSE about 0.0066; HC2/HC3 not evaluated.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C3\",\"text\":\"The exact SD of the OLS slope is 0.268, and the Monte Carlo SD (0.270) agrees with it.\",\"results_keys\":[\"sd_beta_exact\",\"sd_beta_mc\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"MC SD has about 1.6% relative sampling error.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C4\",\"text\":\"The conventional SE is biased downward: its mean (0.190) is about 29% below the true SD of the slope, which explains the undercoverage.\",\"results_keys\":[\"mean_se_conventional\",\"sd_beta_exact\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"The mean SE is a Monte Carlo estimate.\"}\n]\nEOF\n~/wp29/venv/bin/python -c \"import json;json.load(open('out/claims.json'))\"; ls out"}}]}}

In 2000 simulated samples it contained the true slope (β = 0.5) only 84.4% of the time. That is about 22 Monte Carlo standard errors below 95%, so the result is not simulation noise. The error variance is largest at the extreme x values, which pull hardest on the fitted slope, and the conventional formula ignores this.\n- **HC1:** the robust interval does clearly better, but at 90.2% it still falls short of 95% with only 30 observations.\n- **Precision:** each coverage figure is uncertain by about ±0.8 percentage points (standard errors 0.0081 and 0.0066).
