It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md` by following this research protocol. The protocol adds no scientific information to the task; it organizes how you work and what evidence you leave behind.\n\nPHASES (execute in order; a phase is eligible only when its dependencies are satisfied):\n\nP0 Scope and contract (depends on: nothing)\n- Read `TASK.md` completely. In `out/state/contract.md`, restate in your own words: the scientific question; the quantity or quantities to be estimated (the estimands) and the assumptions under which they are meaningful; every required output file and key; the information-availability rules; what would make the task impossible or the result invalid.\n- Write the initial phase ledger `out/state/phases.json`: a JSON object mapping each phase id (P0 … P5) to {\"status\": \"pending\"|\"running\"|\"passed\"|\"failed\"|\"blocked\"|\"stale\"|\"skipped_optional\", \"checks\": [], \"notes\": \"\"}. Keep it current as you work. A phase may only be set to \"passed\" when the checks listed for it in this protocol have actually been executed and their outcome recorded in \"checks\".\n\nP1 Data audit and provenance (depends on: P0)\n- Inspect every input file: compute and record its SHA-256, row and column counts, schema, units, date ranges, missing values, duplicates and anomalies in `out/state/data_audit.md`.\n- Keep an exclusion ledger in `out/exclusions.csv` (columns: step, rule, n_before, n_after, n_removed, rationale) for every filtering step you apply, so that n_raw − total removed = n_analysed.\n- Identify any input that violates the information-availability rules and decide, in writing, how you will handle it.\n\nP2 Baseline (depends on: P1)\n- Before any elaborate method, compute the simplest valid baseline that answers the question (for example a naïve or unconditional estimate), with the same evaluation rule used later. Record it in `out/results.json` under the keys the task requires, or under `baseline_*` keys when the task does not name them.\n\nP3 Method and computation (depends on: P2)\n- Implement the analysis in `out/analysis.py` so that it reads only `data/`, writes `out/results.json` deterministically (fix every random seed you use and record it), and prints nothing that contradicts the written results. Any figure or table must be generated by this script.\n\nP4 Verification (depends on: P3)\n- Re-run `out/analysis.py` from a clean state and confirm it regenerates `out/results.json` with identical values. Record the check in `out/state/phases.json` under P4.\n- Check internal consistency: identities that must hold (for example counts that must add up, standard errors that must be positive, confidence intervals that must contain their estimates, date orderings that must respect the information rules), units, and magnitudes against the baseline. Record every check and its outcome in `out/state/checks.md`. A failed check must be fixed or honestly reported, never silently ignored.\n\nP5 Reporting (depends on: P4)\n- Write `out/report.md` with the sections: Question; Data and exclusions; Method; Results; Uncertainty; Limitations and open issues. Every quantitative statement must cite the key of `out/results.json` it comes from.\n- Write `out/claims.json`: a list of the central claims of your report, each as {\"id\": \"C1\", \"text\": \"...\", \"results_keys\": [\"...\"], \"status\": \"supported\"|\"unsupported\"|\"not_evaluated\", \"caveat\": \"...\"}. Do not state a claim in the report that is not in this ledger.\n- Set the final statuses in `out/state/phases.json`.\n\nSTOPPING RULES\n- Stop and declare the task complete only when every phase P0–P5 is \"passed\" with recorded checks. If a phase is \"blocked\" (missing information, impossible requirement, violated availability rule), stop, set the status, explain in `out/report.md` (section Limitations and open issues) and still write every required file with `null` for values you could not legitimately produce.\n- Do not spend effort on extensions that the task does not require.\n\nRECOVERY RULES\n- Append a short dated entry to `out/state/log.md` after each phase transition and after any important decision, so that work can be resumed by reading `out/state/`.\n- If you discover that an upstream input or decision changed after a downstream phase passed, mark the downstream phases \"stale\" and redo them; do not reuse stale results.\n- If you are interrupted and later resumed, first read `out/state/` and continue from the last consistent state; never re-run expensive steps that already have recorded, unchanged outputs.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. The estimands are the out-of-sample RMSE and MAE of the seasonal-naive forecast and of your model at each horizon, the relative improvement 1 − RMSE_model / RMSE_snaive per horizon, and, at h = 4, the mean loss differential d̄ = mean_t (e²_snaive,t − e²_model,t) with a standard error valid under serial correlation of the loss differential (Diebold–Mariano-type test).\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/cpi_quarterly.csv` — observed data derived from the Bank of Canada Valet series V41690973 (Total CPI, Canada, index 2002 = 100, not seasonally adjusted, monthly; Statistics Canada table 18-10-0004-01); retrieved 2026-10-30 UTC; see `data/README.md` for URL, SHA-256 and terms. And at h = 4, is the mean squared-error loss differential different from zero once we allow for the serial correlation that overlapping 4-step errors create?\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- `data/cpi_quarterly.csv`: 127 rows; `data/cpi_monthly.csv`: 381 rows (`n_input_rows`). Both SHA-256 hashes match the README. The quarterly series can be recomputed from the monthly file to within 5e-7. Details are in `out/state/data_audit.md`.\n- One exclusion (`out/exclusions.csv`): 1995Q1 has no inflation value because the first difference is undefined. 127 − 1 = 126 usable quarters. The last estimation sample (origin 2025Q3) uses 121 observations (`n_analysed`).\n- Data issues (`data_issues`): the series has large real shocks (2008Q4, 2020Q2 COVID, the 2022 surge). I kept them as they are, because any outlier treatment would need judgement made after the origin.\n\n## Method\n- **Baseline (snaive):** the forecast for quarter t+h is the inflation value of quarter t+h−4.\n- **Model (`model_name` = `sar_dummy_aic`), see `model_description`:** OLS regression of inflation on four quarter dummies and p own lags. At each origin, AIC picks p ∈ {0,…,4} on a common sample. The model is then re-estimated on the expanding window from 1995Q2 to the origin, and multi-step forecasts are iterated. Only quarters ≤ origin are used for estimation and lag selection. The AIC chose p = 1 at 15 origins and p = 2 at 25 (`ar_lag_order_selected`).\n- **Evaluation:** RMSE and MAE over the 40 origins for each horizon, and relative improvement = 1 − RMSE_model/RMSE_snaive.\n- **h = 4 test:** d_t = e²_snaive − e²_model, and DM = d̄ / SE_HAC. The SE uses a Bartlett (Newey–West) kernel with truncation lag 4 (`hac_kernel_h4`, `hac_lags_h4`). I fixed this choice before seeing any results: it is ≥ h−1 = 3, it gives non-zero weight to all autocovariances up to lag 3, and the Bartlett kernel guarantees a positive variance. The p-value is two-sided from the standard normal. No random numbers are used (`random_seed` = null).\n\n## Results\n| h | RMSE snaive | RMSE model | MAE snaive | MAE model | 1 − RMSE ratio |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 | 2.849 (`rmse_snaive_h1`) | 2.193 (`rmse_model_h1`) | 2.137 (`mae_snaive_h1`) | 1.519 (`mae_model_h1`) | 0.230 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h1`) |\n| 2 | 2.847 (`rmse_snaive_h2`) | 2.463 (`rmse_model_h2`) | 2.126 (`mae_snaive_h2`) | 1.553 (`mae_model_h2`) | 0.135 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h2`) |\n| 4 | 2.882 (`rmse_snaive_h4`) | 2.343 (`rmse_model_h4`) | 2.181 (`mae_snaive_h4`) | 1.597 (`mae_model_h4`) | 0.187 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h4`) |\n\nUnits are percentage points of annualised inflation. At every horizon the seasonal AR has a lower RMSE and a lower MAE than the seasonal-naive forecast.\n\nAt h = 4: d̄ = 2.818 squared pp (`loss_diff_mean_h4`, positive means the model is better), HAC SE = 1.851 (`loss_diff_se_h4`), DM = 1.52 (`dm_stat_h4`), two-sided p = 0.128 (`dm_pvalue_h4`). **At conventional levels, the h = 4 loss differential cannot be distinguished from zero.**\n\n## Uncertainty\nThe test result depends on the HAC choice. The supplementary results are under `sensitivity_h4`:\n- Bartlett, lag 3: p = 0.177\n- rectangular, lag 3 (original DM truncation): p = 0.097\n- Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold small-sample correction of the main statistic, with t(39) reference: p = 0.173\n- Bartlett, lag 6: p = 0.041\n\nOnly the longest lag, which was not pre-specified, gives p < 0.05. The reason is that d_t has negative sample autocorrelations at lags 3–4 (−0.29, −0.41; see `out/state/checks.md`), so wider windows shrink the long-run variance. I report the pre-specified lag-4 Bartlett result as the primary answer. With T = 40 and a few very large errors (2021–2022), the normal approximation is rough. No formal tests were run at h = 1 or h = 2; those are point comparisons only.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- Errors are computed on the current data vintage. Each quarter is treated as known at the end of that quarter, although publication actually comes about three weeks later. No real-time validity is claimed.\n- The evaluation window contains the COVID shock and the 2021–2022 inflation surge. A few quarters dominate the squared-error losses, so the results may not carry over to calmer periods.\n- Only one candidate model was evaluated, so there is no model-search multiplicity in the comparison. The model is simple (linear, constant parameters, deterministic seasonality).\n- The DM test treats forecasts from estimated models as given (no parameter-estimation adjustment), which is the standard practical usage.\n- All required outputs were produced (`feasibility` = \"complete\").\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The seasonal AR model has lower out-of-sample RMSE than seasonal-naive at h=1, 2 and 4 (relative improvements 0.230, 0.135, 0.187).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_snaive_h1\",\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rmse_snaive_h2\",\"rmse_model_h2\",\"rmse_snaive_h4\",\"rmse_model_h4\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h2\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimates over 40 origins; no formal test at h=1,2; window dominated by 2020-2022 shocks.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C2\",\"text\":\"The model also has lower MAE than seasonal-naive at all three horizons.\",\"results_keys\":[\"mae_snaive_h1\",\"mae_model_h1\",\"mae_snaive_h2\",\"mae_model_h2\",\"mae_snaive_h4\",\"mae_model_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimates only.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C3\",\"text\":\"At h=4 the mean squared-error loss differential (2.82, model better) is not statistically distinguishable from zero with a Bartlett HAC SE at lag 4 (DM=1.52, p=0.128).\",\"results_keys\":[\"loss_diff_mean_h4\",\"loss_diff_se_h4\",\"hac_lags_h4\",\"hac_kernel_h4\",\"dm_stat_h4\",\"dm_pvalue_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Sensitive to HAC choice: p ranges 0.041 (Bartlett lag 6) to 0.177 (Bartlett lag 3); see sensitivity_h4. Each quarter is treated as known at the end of that quarter, although publication actually comes about three weeks later. No real-time validity is claimed.\n- The evaluation window contains the COVID shock and the 2021–2022 inflation surge. A few quarters dominate the squared-error losses, so the results may not carry over to calmer periods.\n- Only one candidate model was evaluated, so there is no model-search multiplicity in the comparison. The model is simple (linear, constant parameters, deterministic seasonality).\n- The DM test treats forecasts from estimated models as given (no parameter-estimation adjustment), which is the standard practical usage.\n- All required outputs were produced (`feasibility` = \"complete\").\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The seasonal AR model has lower out-of-sample RMSE than seasonal-naive at h=1, 2 and 4 (relative improvements 0.230, 0.135, 0.187).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_snaive_h1\",\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rmse_snaive_h2\",\"rmse_model_h2\",\"rmse_snaive_h4\",\"rmse_model_h4\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h2\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimates over 40 origins; no formal test at h=1,2; window dominated by 2020-2022 shocks.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C2\",\"text\":\"The model also has lower MAE than seasonal-naive at all three horizons.\",\"results_keys\":[\"mae_snaive_h1\",\"mae_model_h1\",\"mae_snaive_h2\",\"mae_model_h2\",\"mae_snaive_h4\",\"mae_model_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimates only.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C3\",\"text\":\"At h=4 the mean squared-error loss differential (2.82, model better) is not statistically distinguishable from zero with a Bartlett HAC SE at lag 4 (DM=1.52, p=0.128).\",\"results_keys\":[\"loss_diff_mean_h4\",\"loss_diff_se_h4\",\"hac_lags_h4\",\"hac_kernel_h4\",\"dm_stat_h4\",\"dm_pvalue_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Sensitive to HAC choice: p ranges 0.041 (Bartlett lag 6) to 0.177 (Bartlett lag 3); see sensitivity_h4. But at the 4-quarter horizon the gain is not statistically significant once overlapping errors are accounted for (p = 0.128). Every required file is in `out/`, a clean re-run reproduces the results files byte for byte, and all protocol phases P0–P5 passed.\n\n**Model.** I used a seasonal autoregression: inflation regressed on four quarter dummies plus 1 to 4 of its own past values, with the number of lags chosen at each origin by an information criterion (AIC). It is re-fitted at each origin using only quarters up to that origin, and multi-step forecasts are built forward one quarter at a time. The criterion picked 1 lag at 15 origins and 2 at the other 25.\n\n**Results** (percentage points of annualised inflation, 40 origins from 2015Q4 to 2025Q3):\n\n| Horizon | RMSE seasonal-naive | RMSE model | RMSE improvement | MAE seasonal-naive | MAE model |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 quarter | 2.849 | 2.193 | 23.0% | 2.137 | 1.519 |\n| 2 quarters | 2.847 | 2.463 | 13.5% | 2.126 | 1.553 |\n| 4 quarters | 2.882 | 2.343 | 18.7% | 2.181 | 1.597 |\n\n**4-quarter significance test.** The mean loss difference is 2.82 squared points in the model's favour, with a standard error of 1.85. That gives a test statistic of 1.52 and a two-sided p-value of 0.128. The standard error allows for serial correlation over 4 quarters (Bartlett weighting), a setting I fixed before seeing any results; the task requires at least 3.\n\n**How fragile that conclusion is.** The p-value moves a lot with the standard-error settings:\n- **3 quarters, Bartlett:** p = 0.177\n- **3 quarters, equal weights:** p = 0.097\n- **Small-sample correction:** p = 0.173\n- **6 quarters:** p = 0.041, the only setting below 0.05, and one I did not choose in advance.\n\nThe cause is that the quarterly loss differences are negatively correlated at gaps of 3–4 quarters, so allowing for longer correlation shrinks the standard error. I report the pre-chosen result as the answer.\n\n**Checks.**\n- The input file hashes match the README.\n- The quarterly file can be rebuilt from the monthly one to within 5e-7.\n- Adding +5 to all values after 2020Q1 left every model forecast made at or before 2020Q1 unchanged, so no future data leaks in.\n- The only data dropped was 1995Q1, whose inflation value is undefined.\n\n**Limitations.**\n- The forecasts use today's version of the data and assume each quarter is known when it ends, so there is no real-time claim.\n- The test window includes the COVID shock and the 2021–22 inflation surge, and a few large errors dominate the losses.\n- With only 40 origins, the test's normal approximation is rough.\n- I ran no formal tests at the 1- and 2-quarter horizons; those are point comparisons only.\n\n**Extras.** `results.json` has two keys the task didn't ask for: `sensitivity_h4` and `ar_lag_order_selected`.\n\nFiles are in `out/`:\n- `results.json`\n- `forecasts.csv` (240 rows)\n- `analysis.py`\n- `report.md`\n- `claims.json`\n- `exclusions.csv`\n- `state/` (contract, data audit, checks, phase ledger, log)"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":3263,"cache_read_input_tokens":21562,"output_tokens":1254,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":33},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":3263},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXnVkj2SZoAub1EYhzXy","requestRef":"2b8d05a9-9bab-436a-8432-d69558e9e3ee","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"0ca0bb14-7ffc-40b7-9f91-ad3ef15da07c","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:24:31.584Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0077","sessionId":"ce38d0d0-9bce-4754-b84d-6a4c77ea5fc6","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"} {"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin","leafUuid":"0ca0bb14-7ffc-40b7-9f91-ad3ef15da07c","sessionId":"ce38d0d0-9bce-4754-b84d-6a4c77ea5fc6"} {"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"ce38d0d0-9bce-4754-b84d-6a4c77ea5fc6","totalCostUSD":0.4608846,"totalAPIDuration":138564,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":138555,"totalToolDuration":4209,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":142947,"startTime":1793334128645,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":26,"outputTokens":15764,"thinkingTokens":1320,"cacheReadInputTokens":144478,"cacheCreationInputTokens":23321,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":23321,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.4608846}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}
