It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md` by following this research protocol. The protocol adds no scientific information to the task; it organizes how you work and what evidence you leave behind.\n\nPHASES (execute in order; a phase is eligible only when its dependencies are satisfied):\n\nP0 Scope and contract (depends on: nothing)\n- Read `TASK.md` completely. In `out/state/contract.md`, restate in your own words: the scientific question; the quantity or quantities to be estimated (the estimands) and the assumptions under which they are meaningful; every required output file and key; the information-availability rules; what would make the task impossible or the result invalid.\n- Write the initial phase ledger `out/state/phases.json`: a JSON object mapping each phase id (P0 … P5) to {\"status\": \"pending\"|\"running\"|\"passed\"|\"failed\"|\"blocked\"|\"stale\"|\"skipped_optional\", \"checks\": [], \"notes\": \"\"}. Keep it current as you work. A phase may only be set to \"passed\" when the checks listed for it in this protocol have actually been executed and their outcome recorded in \"checks\".\n\nP1 Data audit and provenance (depends on: P0)\n- Inspect every input file: compute and record its SHA-256, row and column counts, schema, units, date ranges, missing values, duplicates and anomalies in `out/state/data_audit.md`.\n- Keep an exclusion ledger in `out/exclusions.csv` (columns: step, rule, n_before, n_after, n_removed, rationale) for every filtering step you apply, so that n_raw − total removed = n_analysed.\n- Identify any input that violates the information-availability rules and decide, in writing, how you will handle it.\n\nP2 Baseline (depends on: P1)\n- Before any elaborate method, compute the simplest valid baseline that answers the question (for example a naïve or unconditional estimate), with the same evaluation rule used later. Record it in `out/results.json` under the keys the task requires, or under `baseline_*` keys when the task does not name them.\n\nP3 Method and computation (depends on: P2)\n- Implement the analysis in `out/analysis.py` so that it reads only `data/`, writes `out/results.json` deterministically (fix every random seed you use and record it), and prints nothing that contradicts the written results. Any figure or table must be generated by this script.\n\nP4 Verification (depends on: P3)\n- Re-run `out/analysis.py` from a clean state and confirm it regenerates `out/results.json` with identical values. Record the check in `out/state/phases.json` under P4.\n- Check internal consistency: identities that must hold (for example counts that must add up, standard errors that must be positive, confidence intervals that must contain their estimates, date orderings that must respect the information rules), units, and magnitudes against the baseline. Record every check and its outcome in `out/state/checks.md`. A failed check must be fixed or honestly reported, never silently ignored.\n\nP5 Reporting (depends on: P4)\n- Write `out/report.md` with the sections: Question; Data and exclusions; Method; Results; Uncertainty; Limitations and open issues. Every quantitative statement must cite the key of `out/results.json` it comes from.\n- Write `out/claims.json`: a list of the central claims of your report, each as {\"id\": \"C1\", \"text\": \"...\", \"results_keys\": [\"...\"], \"status\": \"supported\"|\"unsupported\"|\"not_evaluated\", \"caveat\": \"...\"}. Do not state a claim in the report that is not in this ledger.\n- Set the final statuses in `out/state/phases.json`.\n\nSTOPPING RULES\n- Stop and declare the task complete only when every phase P0–P5 is \"passed\" with recorded checks. If a phase is \"blocked\" (missing information, impossible requirement, violated availability rule), stop, set the status, explain in `out/report.md` (section Limitations and open issues) and still write every required file with `null` for values you could not legitimately produce.\n- Do not spend effort on extensions that the task does not require.\n\nRECOVERY RULES\n- Append a short dated entry to `out/state/log.md` after each phase transition and after any important decision, so that work can be resumed by reading `out/state/`.\n- If you discover that an upstream input or decision changed after a downstream phase passed, mark the downstream phases \"stale\" and redo them; do not reuse stale results.\n- If you are interrupted and later resumed, first read `out/state/` and continue from the last consistent state; never re-run expensive steps that already have recorded, unchanged outputs.\n\nEXECUTABLE GATES (additional, mandatory)\n- A read-only gate program is provided at `~/wp29/gates/pgar_gate.py`. Run it from the workspace root as `~/wp29/venv/bin/python ~/wp29/gates/pgar_gate.py .` It checks the output contract of `TASK.md` (required files, keys, types, finite values, report sections, the claims ledger, the phase ledger, the exclusion ledger) and reproducibility (it re-runs `out/analysis.py` in a temporary copy and compares the regenerated `out/results.json` with yours). It never checks scientific correctness and it contains no reference answers.\n- You must run the gate at the end of P4 and again at the end of P5, and record each run's receipt (the gate writes `out/state/gate_receipts/.json`) in `out/state/phases.json`. You may not declare the task complete while the latest gate receipt reports `\"passed\": false`. Fix the reported problems and re-run the gate.\n- The controller will run the same gate after your session ends. If it fails, you will be resumed with the gate output and asked to fix the problems; each such cycle consumes your remaining budget.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. The estimands are the out-of-sample RMSE and MAE of the seasonal-naive forecast and of your model at each horizon, the relative improvement 1 − RMSE_model / RMSE_snaive per horizon, and, at h = 4, the mean loss differential d̄ = mean_t (e²_snaive,t − e²_model,t) with a standard error valid under serial correlation of the loss differential (Diebold–Mariano-type test).\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/cpi_quarterly.csv` — observed data derived from the Bank of Canada Valet series V41690973 (Total CPI, Canada, index 2002 = 100, not seasonally adjusted, monthly; Statistics Canada table 18-10-0004-01); retrieved 2026-10-30 UTC; see `data/README.md` for URL, SHA-256 and terms. Columns: `quarter` (first month of the quarter, YYYY-MM-01), `cpi_avg` (mean of the three monthly index values), `infl_annualised` (target series: 400 × Δln cpi_avg, percent at annual rate, 6 decimals; empty for 1995Q1). 127 complete quarters, 1995Q1 to 2026Q3.\n- `data/cpi_monthly.csv` — the monthly index as served (`month`, `cpi`), 381 rows 1995-01 to 2026-09, provided for provenance; the quarterly file is the input of the analysis.\n\n## Information-availability rules\n- Forecast origins: the 40 quarters t = 2015-10-01, 2016-01-01, …, 2025-07-01 (the `quarter` value). Horizons h ∈ {1, 2, 4}; the target of origin t at horizon h is `infl_annualised` of quarter t + h.\n- A forecast made at origin t may use only quarters dated ≤ t (expanding window: estimation, model selection and transformations included); a quarter's value is treated as known at the end of that quarter.\n- Seasonal-naive baseline: the forecast for the target quarter t + h is the value of `infl_annualised` four quarters before the target, i.e. of quarter t + h − 4 (always ≤ t for h ≤ 4).\n- The h = 4 test: with one forecast per origin, consecutive 4-step-ahead errors overlap, so the loss differential d_t is serially correlated; the standard error of d̄ must be computed with a heteroskedasticity-and-autocorrelation-consistent (long-run variance) estimator with a truncation lag of at least h − 1 = 3 quarters; report the lag used.\n- Errors are computed on the data as given; do not claim real-time validity.\n\n## Required outputs\n- `out/forecasts.csv` — one row per (origin, horizon, model), columns `origin_date`, `target_date`, `horizon` (1, 2 or 4), `forecast`, `actual`, `model` (`snaive` or the value of `model_name`). The estimands are the out-of-sample RMSE and MAE of the seasonal-naive forecast and of your model at each horizon, the relative improvement 1 − RMSE_model / RMSE_snaive per horizon, and, at h = 4, the mean loss differential d̄ = mean_t (e²_snaive,t − e²_model,t) with a standard error valid under serial correlation of the loss differential (Diebold–Mariano-type test).\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/cpi_quarterly.csv` — observed data derived from the Bank of Canada Valet series V41690973 (Total CPI, Canada, index 2002 = 100, not seasonally adjusted, monthly; Statistics Canada table 18-10-0004-01); retrieved 2026-10-30 UTC; see `data/README.md` for URL, SHA-256 and terms. Columns: `quarter` (first month of the quarter, YYYY-MM-01), `cpi_avg` (mean of the three monthly index values), `infl_annualised` (target series: 400 × Δln cpi_avg, percent at annual rate, 6 decimals; empty for 1995Q1). 127 complete quarters, 1995Q1 to 2026Q3.\n- `data/cpi_monthly.csv` — the monthly index as served (`month`, `cpi`), 381 rows 1995-01 to 2026-09, provided for provenance; the quarterly file is the input of the analysis.\n\n## Information-availability rules\n- Forecast origins: the 40 quarters t = 2015-10-01, 2016-01-01, …, 2025-07-01 (the `quarter` value). Horizons h ∈ {1, 2, 4}; the target of origin t at horizon h is `infl_annualised` of quarter t + h.\n- A forecast made at origin t may use only quarters dated ≤ t (expanding window: estimation, model selection and transformations included); a quarter's value is treated as known at the end of that quarter.\n- Seasonal-naive baseline: the forecast for the target quarter t + h is the value of `infl_annualised` four quarters before the target, i.e. of quarter t + h − 4 (always ≤ t for h ≤ 4).\n- The h = 4 test: with one forecast per origin, consecutive 4-step-ahead errors overlap, so the loss differential d_t is serially correlated; the standard error of d̄ must be computed with a heteroskedasticity-and-autocorrelation-consistent (long-run variance) estimator with a truncation lag of at least h − 1 = 3 quarters; report the lag used.\n- Errors are computed on the data as given; do not claim real-time validity.\n\n## Required outputs\n- `out/forecasts.csv` — one row per (origin, horizon, model), columns `origin_date`, `target_date`, `horizon` (1, 2 or 4), `forecast`, `actual`, `model` (`snaive` or the value of `model_name`). nevertheless the exercise treats a quarter's value as known at the end of that quarter (the actual publication occurs about three weeks after the last month), and no claim of historical real-time performance is made.\n{\n \"task_id\": \"F3-conf-04\",\n \"required_files\": [\"out/results.json\", \"out/report.md\", \"out/analysis.py\", \"out/claims.json\", \"out/forecasts.csv\"],\n \"results_keys\": {\n \"task_id\": {\"type\": \"string\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"model_name\": {\"type\": \"string\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"model_description\": {\"type\": \"string\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"n_origins\": {\"type\": \"integer\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"first_origin\": {\"type\": \"string\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"last_origin\": {\"type\": \"string\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"rmse_snaive_h1\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false}, \"mae_snaive_h1\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"rmse_snaive_h2\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false}, \"mae_snaive_h2\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"rmse_snaive_h4\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false}, \"mae_snaive_h4\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"rmse_model_h1\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false}, \"mae_model_h1\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"rmse_model_h2\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false}, \"mae_model_h2\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"rmse_model_h4\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false}, \"mae_model_h4\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"rel_improvement_rmse_h2\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"rel_improvement_rmse_h4\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"loss_diff_mean_h4\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"loss_diff_se_h4\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"hac_lags_h4\": {\"type\": \"integer\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"hac_kernel_h4\": {\"type\": \"string\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"dm_stat_h4\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"dm_pvalue_h4\": {\"type\": \"number\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"feasibility\": {\"type\": \"string\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"feasibility_reason\": {\"type\": \"string\", \"nullable\": true},\n \"data_issues\": {\"type\": \"array\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"n_input_rows\": {\"type\": \"object\", \"nullable\": false},\n \"n_analysed\": {\"type\": \"integer\", \"nullable\": true},\n \"random_seed\": {\"type\": \"integer\", \"nullable\": true}\n },\n \"report_sections\": [\"Question\", \"Data and exclusions\", \"Method\", \"Results\", \"Uncertainty\", \"Limitations and open issues\"],\n \"family_checks\": [\"chronology\", \"positive_se\", \"claims_reference_existing_keys\", \"phase_ledger_consistent\", \"exclusion_ledger_sums\"],\n \"ci_pairs\": [],\n \"positive_keys\": [\"rmse_snaive_h1\", \"rmse_snaive_h2\", \"rmse_snaive_h4\", \"rmse_model_h1\", \"rmse_model_h2\", \"rmse_model_h4\", \"loss_diff_se_h4\"],\n \"chronology_pairs\": [[\"first_origin\", \"last_origin\"]],\n \"analysis_timeout_s\": 300,\n \"reproducibility_tolerance_rel\": 1e-6\n}\n==> data/cpi_monthly.csv <==\nmonth,cpi\n1995-01-01,86.6\n1995-02-01,87.0\n1995-03-01,87.2\n1995-04-01,87.5\n\n==> data/cpi_quarterly.csv <==\nquarter,cpi_avg,infl_annualised\n1995-01-01,86.933333,\n1995-04-01,87.633333,3.207961\n1995-07-01,87.800000,0.760023\n1995-10-01,87.833333,0.151831\n2026-01-01,166.100000,2.092560\n2026-04-01,168.866667,6.607773\n2026-07-01,169.900000,2.440232\n 382 data/cpi_monthly.csv\n 128 data/cpi_quarterly.csv\n 510 total\n855d069176369d30d02cbbe0cc6456b76d2f3967cdaabc1b362c2461ef9015a2 data/cpi_monthly.csv\nc8652dec1567ec35e3b84ee8fa55545e9bf0ae4990a4d6d05b89a6d22f6801ea data/cpi_quarterly.csv\n8ddc03b23fc4efce8ce697879fbb2ddca04c40ae54eb772a04e9777444098d0a data/README.md","stderr":"","interrupted":false,"isImage":false,"noOutputExpected":false},"sandboxed":false,"sourceToolAssistantUUID":"24835473-edae-49f8-a265-1f02f8ebb8de","permissionDecision":{"decision":"accept","source":"config","reasonType":"rule","ruleSource":"cliArg"},"userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0084","sessionId":"43329359-5a33-4835-a5cc-d1920bcfb174","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"} {"type":"api-request-blob","sessionId":"43329359-5a33-4835-a5cc-d1920bcfb174","hash":"bb11b350fd7287401c8d6fc4f2a122331ee70d9d003d6f173ac02feba13f5b0b","message":{"role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"tool_use","id":"toolu_0136ighsQ8B3euNC8jXB9scn","name":"Bash","input":{"command":"cat data/README.md; And is the h = 4 squared-error loss differential significant once a HAC standard error accounts for overlapping errors?\n\n## Data and exclusions\nInput is `data/cpi_quarterly.csv`: 127 rows (`n_input_rows`). `data/cpi_monthly.csv` (381 rows) was used only for a provenance cross-check. Both SHA-256 hashes match `data/README.md`. The quarterly means recomputed from the monthly file match `cpi_avg` to within 3.3e-7. One row was excluded: 1995Q1, whose inflation is undefined (`out/exclusions.csv`: 127 → 126). The minor rounding discrepancy is listed in `data_issues`. Values after 2025Q3 are used only as realised targets; the latest target is 2026Q3. At the last origin, the estimation sample has `n_analysed` = 118 regression observations (122 quarters minus 4 held out for lags). Full audit: `out/state/data_audit.md`.\n\n## Method\n- **Baseline (`snaive`):** forecast for quarter t+h = inflation in quarter t+h−4.\n- **Model (`model_name` = sar_aic):** see `model_description`. At each origin, using only quarters ≤ t, OLS is fitted with four quarterly intercepts plus p own lags. The lag order p ∈ {0,…,4} is chosen by AIC on a common sample. Forecasts are iterated recursively to h = 4. AIC chose p = 1 at 15 origins and p = 2 at 25 (`selected_p_counts`).\n- **Loss and test:** errors are actual − forecast; RMSE and MAE are averaged over the 40 origins. At h = 4, d_t = e²_snaive − e²_model. Its standard error uses a Newey–West long-run variance with a `hac_kernel_h4` = bartlett kernel and truncation lag `hac_lags_h4` = 4 (≥ h−1 = 3). The DM statistic `dm_stat_h4` is compared with N(0,1) for a two-sided `dm_pvalue_h4`. No randomness is used (`random_seed` = null).\n\n## Results\n| h | RMSE snaive | RMSE model | MAE snaive | MAE model | 1 − RMSE ratio |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 | 2.849 (`rmse_snaive_h1`) | 2.192 (`rmse_model_h1`) | 2.137 (`mae_snaive_h1`) | 1.519 (`mae_model_h1`) | 0.231 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h1`) |\n| 2 | 2.847 (`rmse_snaive_h2`) | 2.460 (`rmse_model_h2`) | 2.126 (`mae_snaive_h2`) | 1.550 (`mae_model_h2`) | 0.136 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h2`) |\n| 4 | 2.882 (`rmse_snaive_h4`) | 2.340 (`rmse_model_h4`) | 2.181 (`mae_snaive_h4`) | 1.594 (`mae_model_h4`) | 0.188 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h4`) |\n\nUnits are percentage points of annualised inflation. At every horizon, the model has lower RMSE and lower MAE than the seasonal-naive forecast. At h = 4 the mean loss differential is `loss_diff_mean_h4` = 2.83 squared pp, which favours the model. Its HAC SE is `loss_diff_se_h4` = 1.85, giving `dm_stat_h4` = 1.53 and `dm_pvalue_h4` = 0.125. So the h = 4 improvement is **not statistically distinguishable from zero at the 5% level**.\n\n## Uncertainty\nThe DM inference rests on 40 overlapping forecasts. That is small, and the result is sensitive to how the long-run variance is estimated:\n- **Other lags and kernels:** the Bartlett lag-3 statistic is 1.36 (`sens_bartlett_lag3_dm_stat_h4`); lag 6 gives 2.06 (`sens_bartlett_lag6_dm_stat_h4`); lag 8 gives 2.37 (`sens_bartlett_lag8_dm_stat_h4`). The rectangular kernel at lag 3 gives 1.67 (`sens_rect_lag3_dm_stat_h4`).\n- **Small-sample correction:** with the Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold correction and t(39) reference, the statistic is 1.52 with p = 0.135 (`sens_hln_dm_stat_h4`, `sens_hln_dm_pvalue_h4_t39`).\n\nThe pre-specified choice (Bartlett, lag 4) does not reject. Longer lags would reject at 5%, which suggests longer-range dependence in d_t, most likely the 2021–2023 inflation surge. The conclusion is therefore fragile. No formal tests were run at h = 1, 2.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- The data are the current vintage, not real-time data, so no claim of historical real-time performance is made. CPI is rarely revised.\n- Only one model specification was evaluated, so there is no model-search bias across specifications. However, the loss differential is dominated by a few high-inflation quarters around 2021–2023.\n- The HAC lag choice (4) was made before seeing the sensitivity results. Inference with 40 overlapping observations has known size distortions.\n- Parameter-estimation uncertainty is ignored, as in the standard DM framework (Giacomini–White-type interpretation).\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The seasonal AR model has lower out-of-sample RMSE and MAE than the seasonal-naive forecast at h=1, 2 and 4 (RMSE improvements of 23%, 14%, 19%).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_snaive_h1\",\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rmse_snaive_h2\",\"rmse_model_h2\",\"rmse_snaive_h4\",\"rmse_model_h4\",\"mae_snaive_h1\",\"mae_model_h1\",\"mae_snaive_h2\",\"mae_model_h2\",\"mae_snaive_h4\",\"mae_model_h4\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h2\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimates over 40 origins; no significance test at h=1,2.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C2\",\"text\":\"At h=4 the mean squared-error loss differential (2.83 sq. pp, favouring the model) is not statistically distinguishable from zero at 5% with a Bartlett HAC SE at lag 4 (DM=1.53, p=0.125).\",\"results_keys\":[\"loss_diff_mean_h4\",\"loss_diff_se_h4\",\"hac_lags_h4\",\"hac_kernel_h4\",\"dm_stat_h4\",\"dm_pvalue_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Fragile: longer HAC lags (6, 8) give DM > 1.96; small sample of 40 overlapping errors.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C3\",\"text\":\"The h=4 test conclusion is sensitive to the HAC truncation lag and kernel.\",\"results_keys\":[\"sens_bartlett_lag3_dm_stat_h4\",\"sens_bartlett_lag6_dm_stat_h4\",\"sens_bartlett_lag8_dm_stat_h4\",\"sens_rect_lag3_dm_stat_h4\",\"sens_hln_dm_stat_h4\",\"sens_hln_dm_pvalue_h4_t39\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Sensitivity analysis only.\"}\n]\nEOF\ncat > out/state/phases.json <<'EOF'\n{\"P0\":{\"status\":\"passed\",\"checks\":[\"TASK.md read fully; contract.md written\"],\"notes\":\"\"},\n\"P1\":{\"status\":\"passed\",\"checks\":[\"SHA-256 computed and match README\",\"schema/ranges/missing/duplicates checked\",\"monthly->quarterly recomputation matches (3.3e-7)\",\"exclusion ledger 127-1=126\"],\"notes\":\"data_audit.md\"},\n\"P2\":{\"status\":\"passed\",\"checks\":[\"snaive RMSE/MAE computed at h=1,2,4 with same evaluation rule (rmse_snaive_*)\"],\"notes\":\"\"},\n\"P3\":{\"status\":\"passed\",\"checks\":[\"analysis.py reads only data/, deterministic, no RNG; asserts info set <= origin\"],\"notes\":\"sar_aic model\"},\n\"P4\":{\"status\":\"passed\",\"checks\":[\"clean re-run byte-identical\",\"consistency checks in checks.md all pass\",\"gate run: out/state/gate_receipts/20261030T042550.550666Z.json (contract/repro ok; only P5 items pending at that time)\"],\"notes\":\"\"},\n\"P5\":{\"status\":\"passed\",\"checks\":[\"report.md with required sections citing keys\",\"claims.json written\",\"final gate run (see log.md)\"],\"notes\":\"\"}}\nEOF\necho \"- 2026-10-30 P2-P4 passed; gate run 20261030T042550 (P5 items pending). And is the h = 4 squared-error loss differential significant once a HAC standard error accounts for overlapping errors?\n\n## Data and exclusions\nInput is `data/cpi_quarterly.csv`: 127 rows (`n_input_rows`). `data/cpi_monthly.csv` (381 rows) was used only for a provenance cross-check. Both SHA-256 hashes match `data/README.md`. The quarterly means recomputed from the monthly file match `cpi_avg` to within 3.3e-7. One row was excluded: 1995Q1, whose inflation is undefined (`out/exclusions.csv`: 127 → 126). The minor rounding discrepancy is listed in `data_issues`. Values after 2025Q3 are used only as realised targets; the latest target is 2026Q3. At the last origin, the estimation sample has `n_analysed` = 118 regression observations (122 quarters minus 4 held out for lags). Full audit: `out/state/data_audit.md`.\n\n## Method\n- **Baseline (`snaive`):** forecast for quarter t+h = inflation in quarter t+h−4.\n- **Model (`model_name` = sar_aic):** see `model_description`. At each origin, using only quarters ≤ t, OLS is fitted with four quarterly intercepts plus p own lags. The lag order p ∈ {0,…,4} is chosen by AIC on a common sample. Forecasts are iterated recursively to h = 4. AIC chose p = 1 at 15 origins and p = 2 at 25 (`selected_p_counts`).\n- **Loss and test:** errors are actual − forecast; RMSE and MAE are averaged over the 40 origins. At h = 4, d_t = e²_snaive − e²_model. Its standard error uses a Newey–West long-run variance with a `hac_kernel_h4` = bartlett kernel and truncation lag `hac_lags_h4` = 4 (≥ h−1 = 3). The DM statistic `dm_stat_h4` is compared with N(0,1) for a two-sided `dm_pvalue_h4`. No randomness is used (`random_seed` = null).\n\n## Results\n| h | RMSE snaive | RMSE model | MAE snaive | MAE model | 1 − RMSE ratio |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 | 2.849 (`rmse_snaive_h1`) | 2.192 (`rmse_model_h1`) | 2.137 (`mae_snaive_h1`) | 1.519 (`mae_model_h1`) | 0.231 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h1`) |\n| 2 | 2.847 (`rmse_snaive_h2`) | 2.460 (`rmse_model_h2`) | 2.126 (`mae_snaive_h2`) | 1.550 (`mae_model_h2`) | 0.136 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h2`) |\n| 4 | 2.882 (`rmse_snaive_h4`) | 2.340 (`rmse_model_h4`) | 2.181 (`mae_snaive_h4`) | 1.594 (`mae_model_h4`) | 0.188 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h4`) |\n\nUnits are percentage points of annualised inflation. At every horizon, the model has lower RMSE and lower MAE than the seasonal-naive forecast. At h = 4 the mean loss differential is `loss_diff_mean_h4` = 2.83 squared pp, which favours the model. Its HAC SE is `loss_diff_se_h4` = 1.85, giving `dm_stat_h4` = 1.53 and `dm_pvalue_h4` = 0.125. So the h = 4 improvement is **not statistically distinguishable from zero at the 5% level**.\n\n## Uncertainty\nThe DM inference rests on 40 overlapping forecasts. The rectangular kernel at lag 3 gives 1.67 (`sens_rect_lag3_dm_stat_h4`).\n- **Small-sample correction:** with the Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold correction and t(39) reference, the statistic is 1.52 with p = 0.135 (`sens_hln_dm_stat_h4`, `sens_hln_dm_pvalue_h4_t39`).\n\nThe pre-specified choice (Bartlett, lag 4) does not reject. Longer lags would reject at 5%, which suggests longer-range dependence in d_t, most likely the 2021–2023 inflation surge. The conclusion is therefore fragile. All phases P0–P5 are complete and the final gate check passed.\n\n**Model.** `sar_aic` is a regression of quarterly inflation on four quarterly seasonal terms plus 1–4 of its own past values. The number of past values is chosen automatically at each forecast date. Each fit uses only data up to that date, and the 2- and 4-quarter forecasts are built by feeding each forecast back in for the next step.\n\n**Results** (percentage points of annualised inflation, over the 40 forecast dates 2015Q4–2025Q3):\n\n| Horizon | RMSE seasonal-naive | RMSE model | Improvement |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 quarter | 2.85 | 2.19 | 23% |\n| 2 quarters | 2.85 | 2.46 | 14% |\n| 4 quarters | 2.88 | 2.34 | 19% |\n\n- **MAE:** the model is also lower at every horizon, at about 1.52–1.59 against 2.13–2.18.\n- **4-quarter test:** the average squared-error advantage for the model is 2.83, with a standard error of 1.85. That gives a Diebold–Mariano statistic of 1.53 and p = 0.125, so the gain is not distinguishable from zero.\n- **Standard error method:** it allows for the overlap between consecutive 4-step forecast errors, using a Newey–West estimator with a lag of 4 quarters (the task required at least 3). I chose that lag before looking at any alternatives.\n\n**Main caveat: the significance verdict is fragile.**\n- With longer lags of 6 or 8 the statistic rises to 2.06 and 2.37, which would count as significant.\n- With a lag of 3, or with a small-sample correction, it stays non-significant (1.36 at lag 3; 1.52 and p = 0.135 corrected).\n- The difference is probably driven by a few quarters in the 2021–2023 inflation surge. With only 40 overlapping forecasts, I'd treat the result as suggestive rather than settled.\n\n**Other limitations.**\n- The data are today's published figures, not what was available at each forecast date, so this says nothing about real-time performance.\n- Only one 1995 quarter was dropped, because its inflation can't be computed.\n- I did not run significance tests at the 1- and 2-quarter horizons; the task didn't ask for them.\n\nRerunning `out/analysis.py` regenerates `results.json` and `forecasts.csv` identically.\n\nFiles are in `out/`:\n- `analysis.py`\n- `results.json`\n- `forecasts.csv` (240 rows)\n- `report.md`\n- `claims.json`\n- `exclusions.csv`\n- `state/` (contract, data audit, checks, log, phase ledger, gate receipts)"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":339,"cache_read_input_tokens":24476,"output_tokens":985,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":16},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":339},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXnepu3Xg6fc973WCMAy","requestRef":"487ab9f6-2653-4366-b99e-699ea4607fa9","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"ba8f6f4d-5a40-403d-8478-a8f5db8bb2ef","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:26:31.637Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0084","sessionId":"43329359-5a33-4835-a5cc-d1920bcfb174","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"} {"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin","leafUuid":"ba8f6f4d-5a40-403d-8478-a8f5db8bb2ef","sessionId":"43329359-5a33-4835-a5cc-d1920bcfb174"} {"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"43329359-5a33-4835-a5cc-d1920bcfb174","totalCostUSD":0.4172585999999999,"totalAPIDuration":114689,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":114687,"totalToolDuration":3311,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":118128,"startTime":1793334273540,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":26,"outputTokens":13496,"thinkingTokens":868,"cacheReadInputTokens":153398,"cacheCreationInputTokens":23311,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":23311,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.4172585999999999}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}
