It accepts submissions in physics, mathematics, computer science, quantitative biology, quantitative finance, statistics, electrical engineering and systems science, and economics. Submissions are free, pass a moderation check for scope and scholarly form rather than peer review, require endorsement for new authors in a category, and are announced on a daily schedule with persistent identifiers and versioning. Authors choose from a set of distribution licences, including Creative Commons options and arXiv's non-exclusive licence.\n\nProgrammatic access includes a legacy query API returning Atom feeds, OAI-PMH metadata harvesting, RSS and bulk full-text downloads from requester-pays S3 buckets; metadata are released under CC0, while redistribution of the e-prints themselves depends on each paper's licence. The API terms of use ask clients to make no more than one request every three seconds on a single connection and not to circumvent limits with multiple machines. For economists, arXiv's econ and q-fin categories coexist with SSRN and RePEc rather than replacing them, and the absence of download metrics and the moderation delays are the usual complaints.",13 "capabilities": ["Free submission with moderation and endorsement", "Versioned preprints with persistent identifiers", "Daily listings and e-mail/RSS alerts", "Query API with Atom responses", "OAI-PMH harvesting and CC0 metadata", "Bulk full-text access via requester-pays S3", "Author-selected distribution licences"],14 "workflows": ["Posting a working paper to econ.EM or q-fin for priority", "Harvesting metadata for a bibliometric study via OAI-PMH", "Building a literature feed from the query API"],15 "advantages": ["Free, non-profit and open-access", "Open metadata under CC0 and documented APIs", "Long-term preservation and stable identifiers"],16 "limitations": ["Rate limit of roughly one request every three seconds", "E-print redistribution depends on each licence", "No download or citation metrics", "Moderation can delay announcement"],17 "prerequisites": ["Account and endorsement for first submission in a category"],18 "audiences": ["Researchers in the quantitative sciences and economics", "Developers of literature tools", "Scientometricians"],19 "alternatives": ["ssrn", "repec", "osf", "zenodo", "semantic-scholar"],20 "comparison_notes": "SSRN is the commercial preprint venue dominant in economics, finance and law with download metrics but no API; RePEc indexes economics working papers from institutional archives; OSF and Zenodo are general repositories with DOIs. arXiv combines non-profit governance with open data access.",21 "categories": [{ "slug": "research-dissemination", "primary": true }, { "slug": "academic-discovery" }],22 "tags": ["preprints", "open-access", "api", "open-data"],23 "use_cases": ["write-papers", "search-the-web-programmatically"],24 "operating_systems": ["web"],25 "execution_modes": ["cloud"],26 "interfaces": ["web", "api"],27 "deployment_models": ["saas"],28 "integrations": ["OAI-PMH harvesters", "Semantic Scholar", "OpenAlex", "Zotero connector", "Amazon S3 bulk data"],29 "data_formats": ["PDF", "TeX source", "Atom", "OAI-PMH XML", "JSON (Kaggle metadata)"],30 "languages": [],31 "source_model": "open-source",32 "pricing_model": ["free"],33 "self_hostable": false,34 "sources": [35 { "url": "https://arxiv.org/", "type": "official_site", "title": "arXiv.org e-Print archive", "supports": ["name", "summary"], "checked_at": "2026-11-02" },36 { "url": "https://info.arxiv.org/about/index.html", "type": "official_docs", "title": "About arXiv", "supports": ["description", "vendor", "pricing_model"], "checked_at": "2026-11-02", "note": "Independent non-profit as of 2026; free submission; moderation not peer review" },37 { "url": "https://info.arxiv.org/help/api/tou.html", "type": "policy_page", "title": "arXiv API Terms of Use", "supports": ["limitations", "capabilities"], "checked_at": "2026-11-02", "note": "Rate limit guidance, CC0 metadata, e-print redistribution requires permission" },38 { "url": "https://info.arxiv.org/help/api/index.html", "type": "official_docs", "title": "arXiv API Access", "supports": ["capabilities"], "checked_at": "2026-11-02" },39 { "url": "https://info.arxiv.org/help/license/index.html", "type": "license_page", "title": "arXiv License Information", "supports": ["capabilities", "limitations"], "checked_at": "2026-11-02" }40 ],41 "confidence": "high",42 "uncertainty_note": "source_model 'open-source' refers to the arXiv NG software being developed openly; no SPDX identifier is recorded for the service.",43 "discovery_method": "editorial-research",44 "depth": "standard",45 "editorial_status": "reviewed",46 "visibility": "public",47 "featured": false,48 "author": "batch-E"49}50
