A notebook (.ipynb) is a JSON document of code cells, their outputs (text, tables, images, interactive widgets) and Markdown prose. Kernels execute the code: IPython for Python, IRkernel for R, IJulia for Julia and dozens more, all speaking the same messaging protocol. JupyterLab is the extensible browser-based IDE with file browser, terminals, editors and plugins; Notebook 7 offers the simpler single-document interface on the same foundations; JupyterHub serves notebooks to many users on shared infrastructure, and Binder launches reproducible environments from Git repositories. nbconvert exports to HTML, PDF and LaTeX, Voilà turns notebooks into dashboards, and ipywidgets adds interactivity.\n\nJupyter is the default environment for exploratory data analysis, teaching, and documenting empirical work, and the .ipynb format is also executed by VS Code, Google Colab, Kaggle, Databricks and many AI-assisted tools. Install is a pip or conda command; on a cluster of Macs a JupyterHub or remote kernel setup gives shared access.\n\nThe familiar criticisms concern reproducibility: cells can run out of order and hidden state accumulates, which is what marimo and Quarto set out to fix; the JSON format makes diffs and code review awkward without tools like nbdime or Jupytext; and large outputs bloat files. Jupyter is also an environment, not a scheduler, so production pipelines usually move code out of notebooks.",114 "capabilities": [115 "Notebook documents mixing code, outputs and Markdown (.ipynb)",116 "Kernels for Python, R, Julia and many other languages",117 "JupyterLab extensible IDE and Notebook 7 interface",118 "JupyterHub multi-user server and Binder reproducible environments",119 "nbconvert export to HTML, PDF, LaTeX and slides",120 "ipywidgets interactivity and Voilà dashboards",121 "Rich MIME output: plots, tables, HTML, LaTeX math"122 ],123 "comparison_notes": "marimo stores notebooks as plain Python files with reactive execution, trading Jupyter's kernel-agnosticism for reproducibility. Observable notebooks are JavaScript-based and browser-native. Quarto is a publishing system that renders Jupyter or R Markdown notebooks into documents and sites rather than an interactive environment. VS Code and Positron embed Jupyter kernels inside a general IDE, and RStudio remains the R-centric equivalent.",124 "categories": [125 {126 "slug": "notebooks",127 "primary": true128 },129 {130 "slug": "academic-writing"131 }132 ],133 "execution_modes": [134 "local",135 "self-hosted",136 "cloud"137 ],138 "interfaces": [139 "web",140 "cli",141 "library"142 ],143 "source_model": "open-source",144 "license_spdx": "BSD-3-Clause",145 "pricing_model": [146 "open-source",147 "free"148 ],149 "sources": [150 {151 "url": "https://jupyter.org/",152 "type": "official_site",153 "supports": [154 "name",155 "summary",156 "capabilities"157 ],158 "checked_at": "2026-11-02",159 "title": "Project Jupyter"160 },161 {162 "url": "https://docs.jupyter.org/en/latest/",163 "type": "official_docs",164 "supports": [165 "capabilities",166 "languages"167 ],168 "checked_at": "2026-11-02",169 "title": "Jupyter Documentation"170 },171 {172 "url": "https://github.com/jupyterlab/jupyterlab/blob/main/LICENSE",173 "type": "license_page",174 "supports": [175 "license_spdx",176 "source_model"177 ],178 "checked_at": "2026-11-02",179 "title": "JupyterLab LICENSE (BSD 3-Clause)"180 },181 {182 "url": "https://github.com/jupyterlab/jupyterlab",183 "type": "repository",184 "supports": [185 "repo_url"186 ],187 "checked_at": "2026-11-02",188 "title": "jupyterlab/jupyterlab"189 },190 {191 "url": "https://github.com/jupyter/notebook",192 "type": "repository",193 "supports": [194 "capabilities"195 ],196 "checked_at": "2026-11-02",197 "title": "jupyter/notebook (Notebook 7)"198 }199 ],200 "confidence": "high"201}202
