The core server provides subject-based publish/subscribe, request-reply and queue groups with at-most-once delivery and very low operational overhead: a single static binary, clustering and superclusters with gateway connections, and leaf nodes that extend a deployment to edge devices. JetStream, built into the same binary, adds persistent streams with at-least-once or exactly-once semantics, durable consumers, replay by time or sequence, and key-value and object-store abstractions layered on streams. Clients exist for Go, Rust, Python, JavaScript, Java, .NET, C and others, and the nats CLI covers administration and testing.\n\nNATS appeals to teams who want one small system for service messaging, lightweight event streaming and configuration or state distribution across clusters and edge sites, including Apple Silicon machines on a LAN. Its ecosystem of connectors and stream processors is smaller than Kafka's, message retention and throughput targets are more modest, and governance tensions between Synadia and the CNCF in 2025 were resolved with the project remaining under Apache 2.0.",96 "capabilities": [97 "Subject-based pub/sub, request-reply and queue groups",98 "JetStream persistent streams with durable consumers and replay",99 "Key-value and object stores on JetStream",100 "Clusters, superclusters and leaf nodes for edge topologies",101 "Single static binary with built-in monitoring endpoints",102 "Clients in Go, Rust, Python, JavaScript, Java, .NET and C"103 ],104 "categories": [105 {106 "slug": "messaging-queues",107 "primary": true108 }109 ],110 "execution_modes": [111 "self-hosted",112 "cloud"113 ],114 "interfaces": [115 "api",116 "cli",117 "library"118 ],119 "source_model": "open-source",120 "license_spdx": "Apache-2.0",121 "pricing_model": [122 "open-source",123 "free"124 ],125 "sources": [126 {127 "url": "https://nats.io/",128 "type": "official_site",129 "supports": [130 "name",131 "summary",132 "vendor"133 ],134 "checked_at": "2026-11-02",135 "title": "NATS.io",136 "note": "States NATS is a CNCF incubating project"137 },138 {139 "url": "https://docs.nats.io/",140 "type": "official_docs",141 "supports": [142 "capabilities",143 "languages"144 ],145 "checked_at": "2026-11-02",146 "title": "NATS Docs"147 },148 {149 "url": "https://github.com/nats-io/nats-server/blob/main/LICENSE",150 "type": "license_page",151 "supports": [152 "license_spdx",153 "source_model"154 ],155 "checked_at": "2026-11-02",156 "title": "nats-server LICENSE (Apache 2.0)"157 },158 {159 "url": "https://github.com/nats-io/nats-server",160 "type": "repository",161 "supports": [162 "repo_url"163 ],164 "checked_at": "2026-11-02",165 "title": "nats-io/nats-server"166 }167 ],168 "confidence": "high",169 "uncertainty_note": "Synadia's role as principal maintainer is editorial knowledge; the nats.io homepage names only the CNCF."170}171
