It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md`. Below is some general advice about doing careful empirical research; it adds nothing specific to this task and you are free to ignore it.\n\nCareful empirical work usually begins by reading the task statement slowly and more than once, because the most common errors in applied research come not from difficult mathematics but from a misunderstanding of what exactly is being asked, which quantity is of interest, and which inputs are legitimately available. It is worth pausing to think about what the quantity of interest actually means, under what conditions it is well defined, and what would make an estimate of it misleading. Many published results have been overturned not because the estimator was wrong but because the sample was not what the authors believed it to be, or because information that should not have been available at the time of a decision had quietly entered the analysis.\n\nData deserve suspicion. Files assembled from several sources often carry inconsistencies: duplicated records, mixed units, shifted dates, columns whose definitions changed mid-sample, or values that were revised after the fact. Good practice is to look at the data before modelling them: distributions, ranges, missing values, identifiers, and whether counts add up. When something looks odd, it is better to document it and decide explicitly how to handle it than to let a default silently decide. The same applies to transformations: scaling, differencing, winsorising and imputing all change what is being estimated, and each deserves a sentence of justification.\n\nSimple baselines are underrated. A naïve or unconditional estimate computed with exactly the same evaluation rule as the main method tells the reader how much the method actually adds and protects against the illusion of progress created by a complicated pipeline. If the elaborate method does not beat the simple one, that is a finding, not a failure.\n\nUncertainty is part of the result. Standard errors must respect the dependence structure of the data; a confidence interval that ignores clustering, serial correlation or overlapping targets is not conservative, it is wrong. Where the sampling distribution is unknown, resampling or simulation can help, but the assumptions behind them should be stated. A result that is not statistically distinguishable from zero should be reported as such, in plain words.\n\nReproducibility is a courtesy to the reader and a safeguard for the author. Keeping the analysis in a script that reads the raw inputs and regenerates every reported number makes it possible to check the work, to find mistakes, and to rerun the analysis when the inputs change. Fixing random seeds, recording software versions and keeping intermediate files out of the final results all reduce the chance that a number in the report cannot be traced back to a computation.\n\nFinally, honesty about limitations is what distinguishes research from advocacy. Every analysis has weaknesses: assumptions that may not hold, data that may not be representative, methods that trade one bias for another. Stating them clearly, together with what would be needed to resolve them, is more valuable than a confident conclusion that the evidence does not support. When a task cannot be completed as specified, saying so, and saying why, is the correct outcome.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. Months for which g_t cannot be computed are reported as missing and counted.\n- Use only the files under `data/`.\n\n## Required outputs\n- `out/results.json` with the keys:\n\n| key | type | unit | meaning |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| `task_id` | string | — | \"F1-conf-01\" |\n| `first_growth_month` | string | YYYY-MM | first month of the window with a growth rate (expected \"2001-01\" if computable) |\n| `last_month` | string | YYYY-MM | last month of the window for which an index level exists in the sources |\n| `n_months_growth` | integer | months | months in the window with a computable g_t |\n| `n_months_missing_growth` | integer | months | months in the window without a computable g_t |\n| `n_analysed` | integer | months | same as `n_months_growth` |\n| `mean_growth_12m` | number | percent | mean of g_t over the window |\n| `mean_growth_12m_2001_2013` | number | percent | baseline: mean of g_t over 2001-01 … 2013-12 |\n| `mean_growth_12m_2014_2026` | number | percent | mean of g_t over 2014-01 … 2026-09 |\n| `growth_2014_06`, `growth_2016_07`, `growth_2020_05`, `growth_2022_06`, `growth_2026_09` | number | percent | g_t for those months |\n| `max_growth_12m`, `max_growth_month` | number, string | percent, YYYY-MM | maximum g_t in the window and its month |\n| `min_growth_12m`, `min_growth_month` | number, string | percent, YYYY-MM | minimum g_t in the window and its month |\n| `feasibility` | string | — | \"complete\", \"partial\" or \"infeasible\" |\n| `feasibility_reason` | string or null | — | explanation if not complete |\n| `data_issues` | array of {\"issue\",\"handling\"} | — | every data problem detected and how it was handled (empty list if none) |\n| `n_input_rows` | object | rows | {file name: number of data rows read (excluding the header)} for every file under `data/` that was read |\n| `random_seed` | integer or null | — | seed used, if any |\n\n- `out/analytic.csv` — one row per month of the window with a computable growth rate, columns `date` (YYYY-MM-01), `cpi`, `cpi_lag12`, `vintage_used`, `growth_12m`; exactly `n_analysed` rows.\n- `out/exclusions.csv` — the exclusion ledger with columns `step`, `rule`, `n_before`, `n_after`, `n_removed`, `rationale`; one row per step from the rows you start from to the `n_analysed` rows of `out/analytic.csv` (`n_before − n_removed = n_after` on every row; each step's `n_before` equals the previous step's `n_after`).\n- `out/report.md` with the sections: Question; Data and exclusions; Method; Results; Uncertainty; Limitations and open issues.\n- `out/analysis.py` — running `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root must regenerate `out/results.json`, `out/analytic.csv` and `out/exclusions.csv` from `data/` only, deterministically.\n- `out/claims.json` — a list of the central claims of the report: [{\"id\": \"C1\", \"text\": \"...\", \"results_keys\": [\"...\"], \"status\": \"supported\"|\"unsupported\"|\"not_evaluated\", \"caveat\": \"...\"}].\n\n## Constraints\n- No network access. Python: `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels available). Do not modify `data/`.\n- This task is designed to be completed in well under 20 minutes of work.\ntotal 104\ndrwxr-xr-x 6 simon-pierreboucher staff 192 oct. 29 23:31 .\ndrwxr-xr-x 6 simon-pierreboucher staff 192 oct. 29 23:41 ..\n-rw-r--r-- 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 28281 oct. 29 23:30 cpi_assembled.csv\n-rw-r--r-- 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 15416 oct. 29 23:30 cpi_vintage_2016-07-15.csv\n-rw-r--r-- 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 2909 oct. 29 23:30 cpi_vintage_2026-10-28.csv\n-rw-r--r-- 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 1909 oct. 29 23:31 README.md","sandboxed":false,"sourceToolAssistantUUID":"52ad2567-62ca-4ac9-a0ec-5d701762352a","permissionDecision":{"decision":"accept","source":"config","reasonType":"rule","ruleSource":"cliArg"},"userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RA0009","sessionId":"d9a43622-6270-46a7-b476-fcf7ac66f3c3","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}14{"type":"api-request-blob","sessionId":"d9a43622-6270-46a7-b476-fcf7ac66f3c3","hash":"7112fce265e5ced87d3049d3454a3c4b16e3f012a18f0bbc1236245339aab9f8","message":{"role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"tool_use","id":"toolu_01DKioCMmvDQ68Z4DKjy8g3q","name":"Bash","input":{"command":"cat TASK.md; ls -la data; ls out 2>/dev/null","description":"Read task and list data"}}]}}15{"type":"api-request","sessionId":"d9a43622-6270-46a7-b476-fcf7ac66f3c3","id":"2544d1d9-bee8-485f-b28f-39556bb56a33","timestamp":"2026-10-30T05:33:42.751Z","version":"2.1.314","querySource":"sdk","shapeHash":"92341a6f4d8e03474e4d48b7f8511b17cc1f6fcd256f7c24783bb35fbe8c4020","params":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","betas":["claude-code-20250219","interleaved-thinking-2025-05-14","context-management-2025-06-27","prompt-caching-scope-2026-01-05","per-turn-control-2026-07-01","thinking-token-count-2026-05-13","mid-conversation-system-clear-at-2026-08-21","effort-2025-11-24","thinking-binding-controls-2026-08-01","thinking-display-updates-2026-08-18","cache-diagnosis-2026-04-07"],"max_tokens":128000,"thinking":{"type":"adaptive","display":"updates"},"context_management":{"edits":[{"type":"clear_thinking_20251015","keep":"all"}]},"output_config":{"effort":"medium"}},"base":"38d3fb1e-64f2-478a-836e-550d53b8bbd7","keep":2,"tail":["7112fce265e5ced87d3049d3454a3c4b16e3f012a18f0bbc1236245339aab9f8","1544cce832c1e00bd969777767e2b25f25fc116088b75d6516e72f3f7fdf4adf"],"cacheControl":[{"path":["system",0],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}},{"path":["system",1],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}},{"path":["messages",3,"content",0],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}}],"requestDigest":"7eeba846a4ddcf56a37a3fc1e50e1ae5ab1dfad003760898f617b45daf0aac20"}16{"parentUuid":"3ca71457-ab02-483c-862b-c632a309ba67","isSidechain":false,"message":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","id":"msg_011CgXsneuabgE9Z9Dg3xBCc","type":"message","role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"tool_use","id":"toolu_01XirUGuYhZGiK3pW9N6e7DS","name":"Bash","input":{"command":"cat data/README.md; cat data/cpi_vintage_2026-10-28.csv; head -3 data/cpi_vintage_2016-07-15.csv; tail -30 data/cpi_vintage_2016-07-15.csv; head -3 data/cpi_assembled.csv; wc -l data/*.csv","description":"Inspect data files"},"caller":{"type":"direct"}}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"tool_use","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":2343,"cache_read_input_tokens":3186,"output_tokens":178,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":0},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":2343},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":0,"requestId":"req_011CgXsnecyJqVYenEvQS2j3","requestRef":"2544d1d9-bee8-485f-b28f-39556bb56a33","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"9290f87f-86e4-441b-906d-779b1330dfbc","timestamp":"2026-10-30T05:33:44.717Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RA0009","sessionId":"d9a43622-6270-46a7-b476-fcf7ac66f3c3","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}17{"parentUuid":"9290f87f-86e4-441b-906d-779b1330dfbc","isSidechain":false,"promptId":"f0bcc040-f409-4417-a577-69cdcb42fa2f","type":"user","message":{"role":"user","content":[{"tool_use_id":"toolu_01XirUGuYhZGiK3pW9N6e7DS","type":"tool_result","content":"# Data provenance — F1-conf-01\n\nAll three files concern the same series: **CPIAUCSL**, Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers: All Items in U.S. City Average, seasonally adjusted, index 1982–1984 = 100, monthly, produced by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics and distributed by the Federal Reserve Bank of St. Louis (FRED / ALFRED). > out/report.md <<'EOF'\n# F1-conf-01 — 12-month CPI inflation (CPIAUCSL, SA) from two ALFRED vintages\n\n## Question\nFor every month t from 2001-01 to 2026-09, compute g_t = 100 × (P_t / P_{t−12} − 1). P is the CPIAUCSL index level taken from the most recent vintage that covers the month: the 2026-10-28 vintage for 2014-01 onward, and the 2016-07-15 vintage before that. The task asks for the full-window mean, the two sub-period means, five named months, and the maximum and minimum.\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- Inputs read: `cpi_vintage_2016-07-15.csv` (834 rows, 1947-01..2016-06), `cpi_vintage_2026-10-28.csv` (153 rows, 2014-01..2026-09) and `cpi_assembled.csv` (957 rows). Neither vintage file has duplicate dates or gaps in the month sequence.\n- **Missing value:** the 2026 vintage has an empty cell for **2025-10**, meaning the source published no value for that month. I did not impute it, and I did not fill it from the older vintage (which does not cover that month anyway). So g for 2025-10 is missing. The growth rate for 2026-10 would also need the 2025-10 level, but that month is outside the window. The lagged level for 2025-10 (2024-10) does exist, so nothing else drops out.\n- **Revisions:** the two vintages overlap for 2014-01..2016-06 (30 months), and every one of those 30 values differs between them. The largest gap is 0.455 index points, consistent with seasonal-factor revisions. Following the rule, I used the 2026 vintage for these months.\n- **Mixed vintages:** g_t for 2014-01..2014-12 divides a level from the 2026 vintage by a 2013 level from the 2016 vintage, because the 2026 extract starts in 2014-01. This is what the stated rule implies, but it means numerator and denominator come from different vintages.\n- **Errors in the hand-assembled file** (`cpi_assembled.csv`):\n 1. For the overlap 2014-01..2016-06 it uses the older vintage.\n 2. It drops 2016-07.\n 3. From 2016-08 onward every value is shifted one month later than in the source. As a result it shows an invented 2026-10 value, and its empty cell sits at 2025-11 instead of 2025-10.\n 4. In total, 153 of its rows have values that disagree with the authoritative files.\n\n I therefore did not use it for any estimate. I read it only to check it and to run one sensitivity comparison (below).\n- Exclusion ledger (`exclusions.csv`): there are 309 months in the window; 1 is dropped because its own level P_t is missing (2025-10); 0 are dropped for a missing P_{t−12}. That leaves **308 analysed months** (`analytic.csv`).\n\n## Method\n1. Join the levels: the 2016-07-15 vintage for months before 2014-01, and the 2026-10-28 vintage from 2014-01 on (an empty cell stays missing).\n2. Put the series on a complete monthly calendar and compute g_t from the level 12 calendar months earlier.\n3. Take simple arithmetic means over the analysed months.\n\nThe calculation is deterministic and uses no random numbers. `out/analysis.py` regenerates every output file.\n\n## Results\n| quantity | value |\n|---|---|\n| first / last month | 2001-01 / 2026-09 |\n| months with g_t / missing | 308 / 1 (2025-10) |\n| mean g, 2001-01..2026-09 | 2.574 % |\n| mean g, 2001-01..2013-12 (n=156) | 2.361 % |\n| mean g, 2014-01..2026-09 (n=152) | 2.793 % |\n| g 2014-06 | 2.098 % |\n| g 2016-07 | 0.868 % |\n| g 2020-05 | 0.198 % |\n| g 2022-06 | 8.979 % |\n| g 2026-09 | 3.717 % |\n| maximum | 8.979 % in 2022-06 |\n| minimum | −1.959 % in 2009-07 |\n\nSensitivity (`results.json` → `sensitivity`; not part of the estimand):\n- **Older vintage in the overlap:** using the 2016 vintage instead gives g 2014-06 = 2.005 % (vs 2.098 %). The mean over 2014-01..2016-06 is 0.907 % with the old vintage and 0.903 % with the one used. Vintage choice moves individual months by about 0.1 pp but barely moves averages.\n- **Using the assembled file directly:** naive use gives only 306 growth months, a mean of 2.570 %, and g 2026-09 = 3.353 % instead of 3.717 %. The one-month shift biases specific months badly.\n\n## Uncertainty\nThese are exact calculations on published index levels, not statistical estimates, so I report no sampling standard errors. The uncertainty that matters is data revision: as the sensitivity check shows, revisions between vintages move single-month growth rates by about 0.1 pp. Values before 2014 come from a 2016 vintage and may have been revised since. Monthly g_t values share 11 of their 12 months with their neighbours, so they are strongly autocorrelated. Anyone wanting a standard error for the sub-period means would need a HAC (heteroskedasticity- and autocorrelation-consistent) correction for this overlap. I did not compute one, because the task defines the means as descriptive quantities.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- I did not check the SHA-256 values in the README against the files, because those hashes refer to the raw downloads, which were reformatted before being stored here.\n- 2025-10 is missing at source, so the 2014–2026 sub-period mean averages 152 months, not 153.\n- The 2014 growth rates mix vintages, as described above. A full 2026 vintage reaching back to 2013 would remove this.\n- I count the result as \"complete\": every requested quantity is computable under the rules, and the one missing month is reported, not imputed.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"Mean 12-month CPI inflation over 2001-01..2026-09 is 2.574% (308 months; All the requested numbers are available; the only gap is 2025-10, where the source publishes no index level, so 308 of the 309 months have a growth rate.\n\n| Quantity | Value |\n|---|---|\n| Mean, 2001-01 to 2026-09 | 2.574% |\n| Mean, 2001–2013 (156 months) | 2.361% |\n| Mean, 2014–2026 (152 months) | 2.793% |\n| 2014-06 | 2.098% |\n| 2016-07 | 0.868% |\n| 2020-05 | 0.198% |\n| 2022-06 | 8.979% |\n| 2026-09 | 3.717% |\n| Maximum | 8.979% in 2022-06 |\n| Minimum | −1.959% in 2009-07 |\n\nThe higher mean in 2014–2026 is a descriptive difference only; I ran no significance test.\n\nData problems found and how I handled them:\n- **Missing month:** 2025-10 is empty in the 2026 vintage. I left it missing rather than filling it in. No other month drops out, because the level a year earlier exists.\n- **Overlap between vintages:** for 2014-01 to 2016-06, all 30 overlapping values differ between the two vintages, by up to 0.455 index points. As the rules require, I used the newer vintage for those months.\n- **Mixed vintages in 2014:** the newer vintage starts in 2014-01, so each 2014 growth rate divides a 2026-vintage level by a 2013 level from the 2016 vintage. This follows the rules but is a limitation.\n- **Errors in `cpi_assembled.csv`:** the hand-built file has the problems the task warned about, so I didn't use it for any estimate. It takes the older vintage for the overlap, leaves out 2016-07, and shifts every later value one month late. That leaves a made-up 2026-10 value and puts the empty cell at 2025-11. Used directly, it would give 2026-09 growth of 3.353% instead of 3.717%.\n- **Vintage sensitivity:** using the older vintage for the overlap would move single months by about 0.1 percentage points (2014-06 becomes 2.005%), but barely changes the averages.\n\nThere are no standard errors: these are exact calculations on published levels, so the main uncertainty is later data revisions. The script gives identical output when run twice.\n\nOne slip, now fixed: I briefly created a stray `data/out/` folder by accident and moved my script out of it.
