The estimands are the number of sale records that can be analysed, the sum and the mean of the sale price over those records, the median price per square metre over those records, and the reconciliation of the record count and of the price sum to the provider's control totals.\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/sales.csv` — simulated data (a synthetic export of property sales generated for this exercise; not observed data). Intended columns: `sale_id` (string, format S + 5 digits, unique), `municipality` (string), `sale_date` (ISO date), `price_cad` (sale price in Canadian dollars), `area_m2` (living area in square metres). The file is the provider's export as received and may contain export errors.\n- `data/metadata.json` — the provider's control totals computed on the full table before export: `n_records`, `sum_price_cad`, `n_by_municipality`, plus a note on units.\n\n## Information-availability rules\n- Use only the two files under `data/`. A record may enter the analytic dataset only if its fields can be read unambiguously from the file; do not reconstruct, impute or guess the content of records that cannot be read.\n- `feasibility` is \"complete\" only if every record counted in the provider's control totals enters the analytic dataset; otherwise it is \"partial\" and `feasibility_reason` states exactly how many records could not be analysed and why.\n\n## Required outputs\n- `out/results.json` with the keys:\n\n| key | type | unit | meaning |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| `task_id` | string | — | \"F1-conf-04\" |\n| `n_records_control` | integer | records | baseline: `n_records` from metadata.json |\n| `n_valid_records` | integer | records | records read unambiguously and entered in the analytic dataset |\n| `n_unreadable_records` | integer | records | records of the control count that could not be analysed |\n| `n_analysed` | integer | records | same as `n_valid_records` |\n| `sum_price_control` | integer | CAD | `sum_price_cad` from metadata.json |\n| `sum_price_valid` | integer | CAD | sum of `price_cad` over the analytic dataset |\n| `sum_price_unreadable_implied` | integer | CAD | `sum_price_control − sum_price_valid` |\n| `mean_price_valid` | number | CAD | mean `price_cad` over the analytic dataset |\n| `median_price_per_m2_valid` | number | CAD per m² | median of `price_cad / area_m2` over the analytic dataset |\n| `feasibility` | string | — | \"complete\", \"partial\" or \"infeasible\" (see rules) |\n| `feasibility_reason` | string or null | — | explanation if not complete |\n| `data_issues` | array of {\"issue\",\"handling\"} | — | every data problem detected and how it was handled (empty list if none) |\n| `n_input_rows` | object | lines | {\"sales.csv\": number of data lines in the file (excluding the header), whether or not they could be parsed} |\n| `random_seed` | integer or null | — | seed used, if any |\n\n- `out/analytic.csv` — the analytic dataset: one row per valid record, columns `sale_id`, `municipality`, `sale_date`, `price_cad` (numeric), `area_m2`; exactly `n_analysed` rows.\n- `out/exclusions.csv` — the exclusion ledger with columns `step`, `rule`, `n_before`, `n_after`, `n_removed`, `rationale`; one row per step from the number of data lines read to `n_analysed` (`n_before − n_removed = n_after` on every row; each step's `n_before` equals the previous step's `n_after`).\n- `out/report.md` with the sections: Question; Data and exclusions; Method; Results; Uncertainty; Limitations and open issues.\n- `out/analysis.py` — running `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root must regenerate `out/results.json`, `out/analytic.csv` and `out/exclusions.csv` from `data/` only, deterministically.\n- `out/claims.json` — a list of the central claims of the report: [{\"id\": \"C1\", \"text\": \"...\", \"results_keys\": [\"...\"], \"status\": \"supported\"|\"unsupported\"|\"not_evaluated\", \"caveat\": \"...\"}].\n\n## Constraints\n- No network access. Python: `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels available). Do not modify `data/`.\n- This task is designed to be completed in well under 20 minutes of work.\ntotal 152\ndrwxr-xr-x 10 simon-pierreboucher staff 320 oct. 30 00:58 .\ndrwxr-xr-x 7 simon-pierreboucher staff 224 oct. 30 00:57 ..\n-rw-r--r-- 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 6947 oct. 30 00:57 analysis.py\n-rw-r--r-- 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 46733 oct. 30 00:57 analytic.csv\n-rw-r--r-- 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 1786 oct. 30 00:57 claims.json\n-rw-r--r-- 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 493 oct. 30 00:57 exclusions.csv\n-rw-r--r-- 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 5230 oct. 30 00:57 report.md\n-rw-r--r-- 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 2080 oct. 30 00:57 results.json\ndrwxr-xr-x 2 simon-pierreboucher staff 64 oct. 30 00:58 review\ndrwxr-xr-x 8 simon-pierreboucher staff 256 oct. 30 00:58 state\n{\n \"task_id\": \"F1-conf-04\",\n \"n_records_control\": 1200,\n \"n_valid_records\": 1164,\n \"n_unreadable_records\": 36,\n \"n_analysed\": 1164,\n \"sum_price_control\": 471287000,\n \"sum_price_valid\": 456370000,\n \"sum_price_unreadable_implied\": 14917000,\n \"mean_price_valid\": 392070.446735,\n \"median_price_per_m2_valid\": 2984.93695,\n \"feasibility\": \"partial\",\n \"feasibility_reason\": \"36 of the 1200 records in the provider's control count could not be analysed: 36 data lines of sales.csv are corrupted (unreadable garbage, wrong field count), 0 rows had malformed fields and 0 duplicated ids; these records were not reconstructed. The sale_id sequence S00001–S01200 is missing exactly the 36 ids S00700–S00735 (`diagnostics.n_missing_ids_in_sequence`). Compared with the control, the municipality counts are short by Gatineau 11, Laval 8, Levis 3, Longueuil 7 and Sherbrooke 7, which sums to 36 (`diagnostics.municipality_count_gap_control_minus_valid`). I excluded these lines. Following the information rules, I did not reconstruct or impute them.\n- **Thousands separators:** 25 rows store the price as a quoted string with comma separators, such as `\"280,000\"` (`diagnostics.n_price_thousands_separator_parsed`, `data_issues[1]`). I **kept** these rows. CSV quoting makes the field boundaries unambiguous, and the pattern `d{1,3}(,ddd)+` can only be read as one integer. A sensitivity analysis that excludes them is reported below.\n- No row with five fields had a malformed field (`diagnostics.n_rows_bad_format` = 0), and no sale_id was duplicated (`diagnostics.n_rows_duplicate_id` = 0).\n- Exclusion ledger (`out/exclusions.csv`): 1200 → 1164 (wrong field count, −36) → 1164 (format check, −0) → 1164 (unique id, −0). The analytic dataset has 1164 records (`n_analysed`, `n_valid_records`). Sale dates run from 2021-01-01 to 2022-12-31 (`diagnostics.sale_date_min`, `diagnostics.sale_date_max`).\n\n## Method\n`out/analysis.py` reads the file with Python's `csv` module. It keeps a line only if all of these hold: the line has exactly 5 fields; `sale_id` matches `S\\d{5}`; municipality is text; the date is a valid ISO date; the price is an integer, either plain or comma-grouped; the area is a positive number; and the sale_id is unique. Over the kept records it computes the sum and mean of `price_cad` and the median of `price_cad/area_m2`. The reconciliation is n_unreadable = control count − valid count, and implied unreadable sum = control sum − valid sum. The baseline is the provider's control totals (`n_records_control`, `sum_price_control`). The script uses no randomness (`random_seed` = null). It is deterministic: a clean re-run reproduced `results.json` byte for byte (`out/state/checks.md`).\n\n## Results\n- Valid records: **1164** of 1200 (`n_valid_records`, `n_records_control`). Unreadable: **36** (`n_unreadable_records`).\n- Sum of price over valid records: **456,370,000 CAD** (`sum_price_valid`). Implied sum over the unreadable records: **14,917,000 CAD** (`sum_price_unreadable_implied`), which works out to an implied mean of 414,361 CAD per unreadable record (`diagnostics.mean_price_unreadable_implied`). That figure falls within the range of valid prices.\n- Mean price: **392,070.45 CAD** (`mean_price_valid`).\n- Median price per m²: **2,984.94 CAD/m²** (`median_price_per_m2_valid`).\n- Feasibility: **partial** (`feasibility`, `feasibility_reason`). 36 records in the control count could not be analysed because their lines in the export are corrupted.\n\n## Uncertainty\nThese are exact descriptive totals over a fixed file, not estimates from a sample, so I report no sampling standard errors. The main source of uncertainty is how the data were handled:\n- If the 25 comma-formatted prices were excluded, the results would be n = 1139, sum 447,035,000 CAD, mean 392,480.25 CAD and median 2,983.32 CAD/m² (`diagnostics.sensitivity_excluding_thousands_separator_rows`). The mean and median barely change; the sum and count change mechanically.\n- `sum_price_unreadable_implied` assumes the provider's control sum is correct and that every valid record was exported without changes. I cannot verify either assumption from these files.\n- The 1164-record summaries describe only the readable records. Because the corrupted block is one contiguous range of ids, it may not be a random subset. The implied mean of the missing records (414,361 CAD) is above the valid mean, so the full-table mean would be somewhat higher. I did not impute it.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- The task cannot be completed in full: 36 of the 1200 control records are unreadable, so `feasibility` = \"partial\". Recovering these records would need a clean re-export from the provider.\n- My guess that the 36 corrupted lines are ids S00700–S00735 comes from the gap in the id sequence and the matching municipality deficits. I did not use it to reconstruct any content.\n- Keeping the comma-formatted prices is a judgment call, documented above along with its sensitivity analysis.\n- The data are synthetic (simulated), as stated in TASK.md.\n{\n \"dataset\": \"property sales export\",\n \"n_records\": 1200,\n \"sum_price_cad\": 471287000,\n \"n_by_municipality\": {\n \"Gatineau\": 346,\n \"Laval\": 282,\n \"Sherbrooke\": 216,\n \"Levis\": 162,\n \"Longueuil\": 194\n },\n \"note\": \"control totals computed by the data provider on the full table before export; price in CAD, area in square metres\"\n}checks.md\ncontract.md\ndata_audit.md\ngate_receipts\nlog.md\nphases.json","is_error":false}]},"uuid":"e56566f1-703c-498e-8d75-cb97ddb57c66","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:58:24.007Z","toolUseResult":{"stdout":"\"\"\"F1-conf-04: reconcile property-sales export to provider control totals.\nRun from workspace root: ~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py\nReads only data/; writes out/results.json, out/analytic.csv, out/exclusions.csv. The review is in `out/review/review.json`.\n\n**What I checked:**\n- **Reproducibility:** I re-ran `out/analysis.py` on a scratch copy of `data/`. It regenerated `results.json` and `analytic.csv` byte for byte.\n- **Counts:** I checked the counts against the raw file:\n - `sales.csv` has 1200 data lines.\n - File lines 701–736 are 36 lines of random characters with the wrong number of fields.\n - The 1164 valid records have consecutive ids except for one 36-id gap.\n - The municipality shortfalls against the control totals (11 + 8 + 3 + 7 + 7) add up to 36.\n- **Ledger and reconciliation:** the exclusion steps add up (1200 → 1164, with 0 removed at the format and duplicate-id steps). The record count and price sum reconcile to the provider's totals (1200 records, 471,287,000 CAD).\n- **Values:** the sum, mean and median per m² are consistent with each other and in plausible ranges.\n- **Information rules:** the code reads only `data/` and does not reconstruct or impute the corrupted lines. It correctly reports feasibility as \"partial\", with an exact reason (36 records unreadable).\n- **Judgement calls:** keeping the 25 prices written with comma separators (e.g. \"280,000\") is defensible and disclosed. A comparison run without those rows is reported and changes the mean and median only slightly.\n- **Limitations:** they are stated honestly.\n\n**Minor issues:**\n1. **Claim C2 is marked \"supported\" but is partly inferred.** That the 36 corrupted lines are ids S00700–S00735 is an inference from where they sit and the id gap; the lines themselves can't be read. The caveat says this, but the status is stronger than the evidence for that part.\n2. **One sentence needs to be conditional.** The report says the mean over the full table \"would be somewhat higher.\" That only holds if the provider's control sum is correct, and the sentence should say so where it appears.\n3. **An extra key is outside the required schema.** `results.json` has a `diagnostics` key the task doesn't list; it's harmless and useful."}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":1210,"cache_read_input_tokens":15392,"output_tokens":763,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":11},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":1210},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXq8VvHmgQtG526JcTEU","requestRef":"bcbf8761-1a2c-477c-b4e9-232428936ab7","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"03d1e6fa-168f-47a1-9a2b-75c1024c85e1","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:58:59.753Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0196","sessionId":"3603ba98-228b-4013-9561-6a55551ef5bd","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}46{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Review","leafUuid":"03d1e6fa-168f-47a1-9a2b-75c1024c85e1","sessionId":"3603ba98-228b-4013-9561-6a55551ef5bd"}47{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"3603ba98-228b-4013-9561-6a55551ef5bd","totalCostUSD":0.1526344,"totalAPIDuration":38746,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":38745,"totalToolDuration":665,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":39436,"startTime":1793336300343,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":14,"outputTokens":3342,"thinkingTokens":748,"cacheReadInputTokens":51242,"cacheCreationInputTokens":15098,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":15098,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.1526344}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}48
