There are `n_origins` = 60 rolling origins, from `first_origin` = 2021-09-01 to `last_origin` = 2026-08-01, all at horizon h = 1.\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- Input: `data/ip_predictors.csv`, 417 data rows (`n_input_rows`), 1992-01 to 2026-09, contiguous months, no duplicates. The SHA-256 matches the README (`sha256_input`).\n- Missing values: only `neworder_chg` for 1992-01 and 1992-02. These months come before the training window, so nothing was imputed.\n- Exclusions (`out/exclusions.csv`): two steps take 417 rows down to 413 training rows at the last origin (`n_analysed` = 413). Step 1 drops months before 1992-03-01, as the spec requires (2 rows). Step 2 drops feature months whose target would be dated after the last origin (2 rows).\n- Data issues are listed in `data_issues`:\n - The README says 1992-01 is empty for every change series. In fact `ip_growth`, `oil_chg` and `permit_chg` have values for that month. I used them as given; only `ip_growth` for 1992-01 enters, as the 2-month lag for s = 1992-03.\n - The training windows contain extreme values (2020-04 = −14.1, 2008-09 = −4.5). I kept them because the specification is fixed.\n - The data are current vintage and publication lags are ignored.\n\n## Method\nAll computations are in `out/analysis.py`, which is deterministic and uses no randomness (`random_seed` = null).\n\n**Baselines.**\n- Naive: the forecast is `ip_growth` of month t.\n- Expanding mean: the forecast is the mean of `ip_growth` over 1992-04..t.\n\n**Ridge model.**\n- Training rows: months s with 1992-03 ≤ s ≤ t−1, target `ip_growth`_{s+1}.\n- Features: ip_growth at s, s−1 and s−2, plus oil_chg, fedfunds, permit_chg, neworder_chg and tcu at s.\n- At every origin the features are standardised using the training-window mean and sample SD (ddof = 1), and the target is centred on its training mean ȳ (`normalisation_window` = \"expanding\").\n- Coefficients: b = (Z′Z + 50 I)⁻¹ Z′(y − ȳ). Forecast: ȳ + z̃_t·b.\n- ȳ is the same quantity as the expanding-mean forecast. The ridge forecast is therefore the mean forecast plus a shrunken, predictor-based adjustment.\n\n**Evaluation.** RMSE and MAE over the 60 forecasts. Actuals are `ip_growth` at t+1 in the current vintage.\n\n## Results\n| model | RMSE (pp/month) | MAE (pp/month) |\n|---|---|---|\n| naive | 0.8831 (`rmse_naive`) | 0.6990 (`mae_naive`) |\n| expanding mean | 0.5439 (`rmse_mean`) | 0.4293 (`mae_mean`) |\n| ridge | 0.5608 (`rmse_ridge`) | 0.4514 (`mae_ridge`) |\n\n- **Ridge vs naive:** ridge improves RMSE by 36.5% (`rel_improvement_vs_naive` = 0.3649).\n- **Ridge vs expanding mean:** ridge is 3.1% *worse* in RMSE (`rel_improvement_vs_mean` = −0.0310) and also worse in MAE.\n- **Overall:** ridge clearly beats the naive forecast but does not beat the expanding historical mean. The stronger of the two baselines is the mean (`baseline_best_rmse_model`).\n\n## Uncertainty\nI ran Diebold–Mariano tests on the squared-error differential, with the Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold small-sample correction and a t₅₉ reference distribution. For h = 1 no HAC lags are used.\n- Naive vs ridge: DM = 3.36 (`dm_stat_naive_vs_ridge`), p = 0.0014 (`dm_pvalue_naive_vs_ridge`). Ridge is significantly more accurate than naive.\n- Mean vs ridge: DM = −0.54 (`dm_stat_mean_vs_ridge`), p = 0.59 (`dm_pvalue_mean_vs_ridge`). There is no significant difference; the mean's point advantage is within sampling noise.\n\nWith only 60 forecasts, the RMSE differences are imprecise. Ridge and the mean share the same intercept, so the comparison is nested-like, and a standard DM test can be conservative in that setting.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- **Data vintage:** the data are the current (revised) vintage and publication lags are ignored. The results describe how predictable the revised series is under stylised timing, not real-time forecast performance.\n- **Fixed specification:** λ = 50 and the feature set are fixed by the task and were not tuned. A different λ could change the ranking against the mean; I did not explore this because the task does not ask for it.\n- **Outliers:** the COVID-era outliers (2020) in the training windows are not down-weighted, and they may distort the ridge coefficients.\n- **Sample size:** the evaluation sample is short (60 months) and covers a single regime (2021–2026).\n- **README discrepancy:** the README does not match the data on which 1992-01 cells are empty (see Data and exclusions). The effect is negligible, since only one lag value enters.\n- Verification steps are recorded in `out/state/checks.md`. They include an independent re-implementation run with all future data corrupted, which reproduced every forecast and so rules out look-ahead.\norigin_date,target_date,horizon,forecast,actual,model\n2021-09-01,2021-10-01,1,-1.1923630000,1.3345990000,naive\n2021-09-01,2021-10-01,1,0.1298718701,1.3345990000,mean\n2021-09-01,2021-10-01,1,0.1124703966,1.3345990000,ridge\n2021-10-01,2021-11-01,1,1.3345990000,0.6757500000,naive\n 181 out/forecasts.csv\nmonth,ip_growth,oil_chg,fedfunds,permit_chg,neworder_chg,tcu\n1992-01-01,-0.525126,-3.708965,4.030000,1.496754,,79.327800\n1992-02-01,0.703489,1.164034,4.060000,6.209822,,79.732900\n1992-03-01,0.848952,-0.474559,3.980000,-5.746644,4.054668,80.246400","is_error":false}]},"uuid":"b144e642-cf16-4d68-9377-be43703cd0ec","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:10:37.852Z","toolUseResult":{"stdout":"# F3-conf-03 — Rolling-origin ridge forecasts of US industrial production growth\n\n## Question\nDoes a fixed-penalty ridge regression (λ = 50, key `lambda`) on eight standardised monthly predictors (`n_features` = 8) forecast next month's US industrial production growth (100 × Δln INDPRO, percent per month) better than the naive (last-value) forecast and the expanding historical mean? They include an independent re-implementation run with all future data corrupted, which reproduced every forecast and so rules out look-ahead.\norigin_date,target_date,horizon,forecast,actual,model\n2021-09-01,2021-10-01,1,-1.1923630000,1.3345990000,naive\n2021-09-01,2021-10-01,1,0.1298718701,1.3345990000,mean\n2021-09-01,2021-10-01,1,0.1124703966,1.3345990000,ridge\n2021-10-01,2021-11-01,1,1.3345990000,0.6757500000,naive\n The real reason is that TASK.md sets the start at 1992-03 and neworder_chg is missing for 1992-01 and 1992-02. The row counts themselves are correct (417 -> 415 -> 413).\",\n \"suggested_fix\": \"Give the rationale as the TASK.md training-window rule plus the missing neworder_chg values.\"\n },\n {\n \"id\": \"R3\",\n \"severity\": \"minor\",\n \"location\": \"out/report.md Uncertainty\",\n \"issue\": \"The report does not mention the overlap between the evaluation period (2021-09 to 2026-08) and the post-COVID recovery, or how much single months drive RMSE when n = 60. A separate re-implementation written from the TASK.md spec matched RMSE and MAE for naive (0.8831/0.6990), mean (0.5439/0.4293) and ridge (0.5608/0.4514), with n_analysed = 413. The code follows the information-availability rules: standardisation statistics are recomputed from each origin's training window with ddof = 1, the intercept is unpenalised, and the training targets are dated <= t. All required keys are present and consistent, and forecasts.csv has 180 rows. The HLN-corrected DM test is implemented correctly. I re-ran `out/analysis.py` in a scratch copy and it reproduced `results.json` and `forecasts.csv` exactly. A separate re-implementation I wrote from the task spec matched every RMSE and MAE value:\n\n| Forecast | RMSE (percent per month) | MAE (percent per month) |\n|---|---|---|\n| Naive | 0.8831 | 0.6990 |\n| Expanding mean | 0.5439 | 0.4293 |\n| Ridge | 0.5608 | 0.4514 |\n\nThe ridge model is trained on 413 rows at the last origin.\n\n- **Required outputs:** every required key in `results.json` is present and consistent, and `forecasts.csv` has the expected 180 rows.\n- **No future data:** reading the code confirms the rules are followed. At each origin it uses only rows dated on or before that month. It recomputes the feature means, standard deviations and target mean from that training window every time, and leaves the intercept unpenalised.\n- **Significance test:** the Diebold–Mariano test, with its small-sample correction, is implemented correctly.\n- **Claims:** they match the numbers. Ridge beats the naive forecast by about 36% (p ≈ 0.001). It is about 3% worse than the expanding mean, a difference that is not statistically significant (p ≈ 0.59). The report states this cautiously and is honest about the revised-data and 60-forecast limitations.\n\nThree minor issues are recorded in `out/review/review.json`, none of which changes the conclusions:\n1. **Look-ahead claim:** the claim that a re-implementation with corrupted future data reproduced every forecast is backed only by a process log in `out/state/`, not by the deliverables. The code itself does support the claim.\n2. **Exclusion rationale:** the reason given for dropping the first two months is slightly off. The row counts are correct.\n3. **Uncertainty:** the report doesn't discuss how the post-COVID recovery months might drive RMSE over only 60 forecasts. It also gives no interval for the ridge-versus-mean improvement."}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":1597,"cache_read_input_tokens":13812,"output_tokens":733,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":32},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":1597},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXmUxJPemsPGFqsajymR","requestRef":"230fec13-f627-42b7-a271-32d117e4df4e","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"c3fcf42e-4e30-41b5-baf6-97077d94d801","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:11:09.496Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0025","sessionId":"b18ab231-c4ed-409c-8c85-f11ee5ebecc1","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}37{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Review","leafUuid":"c3fcf42e-4e30-41b5-baf6-97077d94d801","sessionId":"b18ab231-c4ed-409c-8c85-f11ee5ebecc1"}38{"type":"atis-latch","atis":"","sessionId":"b18ab231-c4ed-409c-8c85-f11ee5ebecc1"}39{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"b18ab231-c4ed-409c-8c85-f11ee5ebecc1","totalCostUSD":0.1467834,"totalAPIDuration":33973,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":33968,"totalToolDuration":1373,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":35497,"startTime":1793333434007,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":12,"outputTokens":3514,"thinkingTokens":550,"cacheReadInputTokens":34652,"cacheCreationInputTokens":13905,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":13905,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.1467834}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}40
