Estimate the average effect of the programme on the student test score and report a valid measure of its sampling uncertainty. The estimand τ is the difference between the mean score of students in treated schools and the mean score of students in control schools (student-weighted means, i.e. the OLS coefficient of `score` on `treated` with an intercept). Uncertainty must reflect the design: the programme varies only between schools, and students within the same school share unobserved school-level influences; schools are independent of each other. Decide, at the 5% level (two-sided), whether the data support a non-zero effect.\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/schools.csv` — simulated data (a synthetic dataset generated for this exercise; it is not observed data). Columns: `school_id` (integer school identifier), `student_id` (integer student identifier, unique), `treated` (1 if the student's school received the programme, 0 otherwise — constant within a school), `score` (test score, points). One row per student; rows are in random order. The design is balanced: every school has the same number of students.\n\n## Information-availability rules\n- Use only `data/schools.csv`. The goal is to estimate τ, the difference in mean student score between treated and control schools (the OLS coefficient of `score` on `treated` with an intercept), with uncertainty that respects the clustered design, and to decide at the 5% level (two-sided) whether τ ≠ 0.\n\n## Data and exclusions\n`data/schools.csv` (simulated): 1000 rows read (`n_input_rows`), 40 schools (`n_schools`) of 25 students each (`students_per_school`), 20 treated schools (`n_treated_schools`). No missing values, no duplicate students, and treatment is constant within every school. Four validity rules were applied and removed 0 rows (`out/exclusions.csv`), so 1000 students were analysed (`n_analysed`). `data_issues` is empty. Full audit: `out/state/data_audit.md`.\n\n## Method\n- Point estimate: OLS of score on treated with an intercept (`tau_hat`), which equals the difference in student-weighted means (`mean_score_treated` − `mean_score_control`).\n- Baseline: the conventional homoskedastic iid OLS standard error (`se_iid`, with `p_value_iid`).\n- Main uncertainty measure: a cluster-robust (CR1) sandwich standard error clustered by school (`se_cluster`), with the usual small-sample factor G/(G−1)·(N−1)/(N−K). The test statistic (`t_stat_cluster`) is compared with a t distribution on G−1 = 39 df (`df_cluster`). The p-value is `p_value` and the 95% CI is tau_hat ± t₀.₉₇₅,₃₉ (`t_crit_975`) × se_cluster (`tau_ci_low`, `tau_ci_high`).\n- Cross-check: a Welch t-test on the 40 school means (`se_school_means_welch`, `p_school_means_welch`).\n- ICC: one-way ANOVA estimator on the OLS residuals with schools as groups. The between-school mean square uses G−2 df because two arm means were removed (`icc_hat`, `sigma2_between_resid`, `sigma2_within_resid`). Implied design effect: 1+(m−1)·ICC (`design_effect_from_icc`).\n- Nothing random is used (`random_seed` = null). `out/analysis.py` regenerates all results.\n\n## Results\n- `tau_hat` = 0.961 points (treated mean 51.28 vs control mean 50.32).\n- `se_cluster` = 0.729; `p_value` = 0.195; 95% CI [−0.513, 2.436] (`tau_ci_low`, `tau_ci_high`).\n- `effect_significant_5pct` = false: with valid design-based uncertainty, the data do **not** support a non-zero effect at the 5% level.\n- Naive baseline: `se_iid` = 0.282, with `p_value_iid` = 0.0007. This would wrongly suggest a highly significant effect.\n- `icc_hat` = 0.240, giving `design_effect_from_icc` = 6.77.\n\n## Uncertainty\nThe clustered SE is 2.58 times the iid SE (`se_ratio_cluster_over_iid`). This is close to the 2.60 implied by the estimated ICC (`sqrt_design_effect`), so the inflation comes from the shared school-level variation. The school-means Welch test gives a similar SE of 0.738 and p = 0.201 (`se_school_means_welch`, `p_school_means_welch`), so the conclusion does not depend on the choice between these two cluster-valid methods. The effective sample size is about 1000/6.8 ≈ 150 students. With 40 clusters split evenly, CR1 with t(G−1) inference is standard and adequate.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- The data are simulated. Reading τ as a causal effect assumes schools were assigned to treatment as if at random, which cannot be checked without covariates.\n- Failing to reject H0 does not show that the effect is zero. The CI is compatible with effects from about −0.5 to +2.4 points, so the study is under-powered for effects of about 1 point.\n- The ICC is a point estimate; its sampling uncertainty is not quantified.\n- Using G−2 instead of G−1 df, or other small-sample corrections (CR2/wild bootstrap), would change the p-value only slightly (compare the Welch cross-check). The review is saved to `out/review/review.json`.\n\nI ran `out/analysis.py` again in a scratch copy, and it produced exactly the same `results.json`. It reads only `data/schools.csv` and uses nothing random. All required keys are present. I checked the data myself:\n\n- **Data:** there are 1000 rows, 40 schools of 25 students each, and 20 treated schools. Nothing is missing or duplicated, and treatment is the same for every student within a school, so excluding no rows is correct.\n- **Method:** the main standard error allows for students in the same school being correlated, which fits the design. It is 0.729, and the test uses a t distribution with 39 degrees of freedom. As a cross-check, the code also compares the 40 school averages directly; I recomputed that standard error and got 0.738, matching the file.\n- **Baseline:** the naive standard error that treats every student as independent is reported (0.282, p = 0.0007), as the task requires.\n- **Effect estimate:** the effect is 0.96 points, with p = 0.195 and a 95% interval of −0.51 to 2.44 points. \"Not significant at 5%\" is the right conclusion.\n- **Claims:** they match the numbers and are hedged properly, including that not rejecting the null is not evidence of zero effect. The share of variance between schools (0.24) roughly explains why the correct standard error is about 2.6 times the naive one.\n\nThe three minor issues:\n1. **Power:** the report says the study is \"under-powered for effects of about 1 point\" without calculating power. It's plausible given how wide the interval is, but it isn't computed.\n2. **Degrees of freedom:** the code uses 39 (schools minus one), but 38 is also standard for a treatment assigned by school. The report says the choice barely matters and the cross-check backs that up, but the 38 version isn't reported.\n3. **Between-school share:** the 0.24 estimate has no uncertainty attached, though the report says so."}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":943,"cache_read_input_tokens":9615,"output_tokens":669,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":0},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":943},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":0,"requestId":"req_011CgXoVuWUW3M3DpmJvJjLN","requestRef":"d4d3fef3-e960-463e-add9-1b26746524ff","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"d163490f-4831-4957-ac59-83840e6e7c68","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:37:36.062Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0116","sessionId":"bedc27a6-387f-4b00-bddd-4347038d79ae","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}36{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Review","leafUuid":"d163490f-4831-4957-ac59-83840e6e7c68","sessionId":"bedc27a6-387f-4b00-bddd-4347038d79ae"}37{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"bedc27a6-387f-4b00-bddd-4347038d79ae","totalCostUSD":0.0957888,"totalAPIDuration":27358,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":27357,"totalToolDuration":855,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":28329,"startTime":1793335027757,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":12,"outputTokens":2236,"thinkingTokens":200,"cacheReadInputTokens":28754,"cacheCreationInputTokens":9054,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":9054,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.0957888}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}38
