For each proposition, decide whether it is true (give a proof sketch) or false (give an explicit counterexample). For a false proposition, the counterexample must be made concrete: specify the joint construction of (X, Y), and produce a simulated sample from it that illustrates numerically that the marginals are normal while the sum is not (choose a construction whose departure from normality is clearly visible at the design sample size). The estimands are the truth values of propositions A and B and, for a false proposition, a verifiable counterexample.\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/propositions.csv` — columns `id`, `statement`: the two propositions (A and B) to assess.\n- `data/design.csv` — columns `parameter`, `value`, `description`: the random `seed` to use (`numpy.random.default_rng`) and the sample size `n` for the numerical illustration.\n\n## Information-availability rules\n- Use only the files under `data/`. Prove the true one(s); give a concrete, simulated counterexample for the false one(s).\n\n## Data and exclusions\n`data/propositions.csv` (2 rows) and `data/design.csv` (2 rows; seed 20261029, n 100000) — `n_input_rows`. No data problems (`data_issues` is empty), no exclusions (`out/exclusions.csv`); the simulated sample has `n_analysed` = 100000 rows with `random_seed` = 20261029.\n\n## Method\nThe verdicts come from mathematical argument (`out/argument.md`). For A, the counterexample is X ~ N(0,1), S an independent Rademacher sign, Y = S·X (`counterexample_values.construction`). `out/analysis.py` draws X and then S from `numpy.random.default_rng(seed)`, writes `out/counterexample.csv`, and computes sample means and SDs (ddof=1) and the KS distance of x+y to the normal with its sample mean and SD. As a baseline for B, it then draws independent X, Y ~ N(0,1) from the same generator and computes the same KS statistic (`baseline_independent_sum`).\n\n## Results\n- **A is false** (`statement_true` = false). Y = S·X is N(0,1) by symmetry, but X + Y = (1+S)X is 0 with probability 1/2 and 2X otherwise. That makes it a mixture with an atom and variance 2, so it is neither normal nor constant (`counterexample_provided` = true).\n- Simulated sample: mean_x −0.0033, sd_x 0.9982, mean_y −0.0002, sd_y 0.9982 (`counterexample_values.mean_x/sd_x/mean_y/sd_y`). The marginal KS distances to N(0,1) are 0.0028 and 0.0016 (`counterexample_values.ks_x_vs_std_normal`, `ks_y_vs_std_normal`), below the approximate 5% critical value 0.0043 (`counterexample_values.ks_critical_5pct_approx`).\n- Sum: mean −0.0036, sd 1.4059, against a theoretical √2 ≈ 1.414 (`counterexample_values.mean_sum`, `sd_sum`). KS to the fitted normal is 0.2508 (`counterexample_values.ks_sum_vs_normal`), in line with the theoretical lower bound of 1/4. A fraction of 0.50047 of the sums are exactly 0 (`counterexample_values.frac_sum_exactly_zero`).\n- **B is true** (`statement_b_true` = true): the characteristic-function proof is in argument.md. In the baseline with independent draws, KS of the sum is 0.0020 (`baseline_independent_sum.ks_sum_vs_normal`), about 125 times smaller than for the counterexample.\n\n## Uncertainty\nThe verdicts are deductive and carry no statistical uncertainty. The simulated statistics are subject to Monte Carlo error of order 1/√n ≈ 0.003. The KS gap (0.25 vs a critical value ≈ 0.004) is far beyond sampling noise. The usual KS critical value is only approximate when parameters are estimated from the data, which does not affect the conclusion.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- **What the illustration shows:** at the design n, the sample behaves as theory predicts. The marginals cannot be told apart from N(0,1) by KS, while the sum is grossly non-normal (an atom at 0 holding half the mass).\n- **What it does not show:** a finite sample cannot prove that the marginals are normal or that B holds. Those facts rest on the arguments in `out/argument.md`.\n- The extra diagnostics (marginal KS, fraction of zeros, approximate critical value) and the `baseline_independent_sum` block are supplementary keys added beyond the required schema.","stderr":"","interrupted":false,"isImage":false,"noOutputExpected":false},"sandboxed":false,"sourceToolAssistantUUID":"280e85e3-9c56-4f5a-b28b-63788df7eac1","permissionDecision":{"decision":"accept","source":"config","reasonType":"rule","ruleSource":"cliArg"},"userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0185","sessionId":"f2ed3ba8-8e24-4602-b8fe-f52c7883933a","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}14{"type":"api-request-blob","sessionId":"f2ed3ba8-8e24-4602-b8fe-f52c7883933a","hash":"cb7a3d034222286c4f5a33efbd0025722671b2920a97a57bfb85fde2ffb6f117","message":{"role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"tool_use","id":"toolu_01732FX34FwokWvYYEbMQo8N","name":"Bash","input":{"command":"cat TASK.md; Define Y = S·X.\n\n1. *X is normal*: by construction.\n2. *Y is normal*: for any t, P(Y ≤ t) = ½P(X ≤ t) + ½P(−X ≤ t) = ½Φ(t) + ½Φ(t) = Φ(t), using the symmetry of N(0,1) (−X ~ N(0,1)). So Y ~ N(0,1).\n3. *X + Y is not normal*: X + Y = (1 + S)X, which equals 0 when S = −1 and 2X when S = 1. Hence its law is the mixture ½δ₀ + ½N(0,4).\n - It has an atom: P(X + Y = 0) = ½ (P(X = 0) = 0 so the S = 1 branch adds nothing). A non-degenerate normal law has no atoms.\n - It is not constant: Var(X + Y) = E[(1+S)²X²] = E[(1+S)²]·1 = ½·4 = 2 > 0.\n - Therefore X + Y is neither a non-degenerate nor a degenerate normal. ∎\n\n(X and Y are uncorrelated — Cov(X,Y) = E[S]E[X²] = 0 — but not independent, and (X, Y) is not jointly normal; this is exactly the gap the proposition overlooks.)\n\n**Quantitative separation.** The closest normal by moments is N(0, 2), whose CDF at 0 is ½, while the CDF of X + Y jumps from ¼ to ¾ at 0. Hence the Kolmogorov–Smirnov distance between the law of X + Y and N(0,2) is at least ¼ (and in fact any normal is at distance ≥ ¼ from it, since the jump of size ½ cannot be matched by a continuous CDF closer than ½·½). Define Y = S·X.\n\n1. The simulation (`out/analysis.py`, `out/counterexample.csv`, seed and n from `data/design.csv`) reproduces this: `counterexample_values.ks_sum_vs_normal` ≈ 0.251, `frac_sum_exactly_zero` ≈ 0.500.\n\n## Proposition B (TRUE)\n*\"If X and Y are independent and each normal, then X + Y is normal.\"*\n\n**Proof sketch.** Let X ~ N(μ₁, σ₁²), Y ~ N(μ₂, σ₂²) independent (σᵢ² ≥ 0, allowing degenerate cases). Only minor presentational issues.\"}\nEOF\n~/wp29/venv/bin/python -m json.tool out/review/review.json >/dev/null && echo ok"}}]}}31{"type":"api-request","sessionId":"f2ed3ba8-8e24-4602-b8fe-f52c7883933a","id":"10030a5d-b16d-4bcc-8d13-7227ca0ca0be","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:56:05.012Z","version":"2.1.314","querySource":"sdk","shapeHash":"1098fd7d3373607e3e3ab984f89bceeba76d1856dd9b636aaa696c491d451873","params":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","betas":["claude-code-20250219","interleaved-thinking-2025-05-14","context-management-2025-06-27","prompt-caching-scope-2026-01-05","per-turn-control-2026-07-01","thinking-token-count-2026-05-13","mid-conversation-system-clear-at-2026-08-21","effort-2025-11-24","thinking-binding-controls-2026-08-01","thinking-display-updates-2026-08-18","cache-diagnosis-2026-04-07"],"max_tokens":128000,"thinking":{"type":"adaptive","display":"updates"},"context_management":{"edits":[{"type":"clear_thinking_20251015","keep":"all"}]},"output_config":{"effort":"medium"}},"base":"7fb1446a-f32b-49d5-8c8c-fded2ce7f581","keep":8,"tail":["6e751c369c5f9e71e79c196462f2c10708c50d0362c5c6bf09c5202b395506ac","388e260a08c57b7707515795c70dc32c644637e1f25218577fa1160f13e41ecf"],"cacheControl":[{"path":["system",0],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}},{"path":["system",1],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}},{"path":["messages",9,"content",0],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}}],"requestDigest":"a38b5b914baf47e6fe5ef809eb77ad85a56cabe09d8b6200aa529558a4295d28"}32{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Review","leafUuid":"26b32591-520c-4c0a-baab-41652a4598eb","sessionId":"f2ed3ba8-8e24-4602-b8fe-f52c7883933a"}33{"type":"atis-latch","atis":"","sessionId":"f2ed3ba8-8e24-4602-b8fe-f52c7883933a"}34{"parentUuid":"26b32591-520c-4c0a-baab-41652a4598eb","isSidechain":false,"message":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","id":"msg_011CgXpvDzFaA1kCVyWGAZEA","type":"message","role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"thinking","thinking":"","signature":"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"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":1055,"cache_read_input_tokens":10319,"output_tokens":720,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":5},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":1055},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"thinkingDurationMs":6561,"thinkingDisplay":"updates","apiBlockIndex":0,"requestId":"req_011CgXpvDhtRsWAcKneS57V1","requestRef":"10030a5d-b16d-4bcc-8d13-7227ca0ca0be","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"2f60d4f1-11e0-42ad-bb94-d2c97cb52dbc","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:56:12.208Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0185","sessionId":"f2ed3ba8-8e24-4602-b8fe-f52c7883933a","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}35{"parentUuid":"2f60d4f1-11e0-42ad-bb94-d2c97cb52dbc","isSidechain":false,"message":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","id":"msg_011CgXpvDzFaA1kCVyWGAZEA","type":"message","role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"text","text":"**Verdict: accept.** I found no critical or major issues, only two minor ones.\n\nI re-ran `out/analysis.py` on a scratch copy of `data/`. It produced the same `results.json` and a byte-identical `counterexample.csv`: 100000 rows with seed 20261029, both taken from the design file. Every required key is present and the values are actually computed, not typed in. The code reads only `data/`. The verdicts come from the written argument, as the task requires, and the simulation is treated only as an illustration.\n\n**Proposition A (false).** The counterexample is X ~ N(0,1), S a random ±1 sign independent of X, and Y = S·X. This is correct:\n- Y is N(0,1) because the normal distribution is symmetric.\n- X+Y is 0 half the time and 2X otherwise. That gives it a point mass at 0 and a variance of 2, so it is neither normal nor constant.\n- The argument says no normal can be within 1/4 of it in Kolmogorov–Smirnov (KS) distance. This bound is valid, and the sample matches it: KS distance 0.251, with 50.05% of the sums exactly zero.\n\n**Proposition B (true).** The proof by characteristic functions is correct and covers the constant case. A simulated sum of two independent normals is included as a comparison (KS distance 0.002).\n\n**Report and claims.** The numbers in `report.md` and `claims.json` match `results.json`. The caveats are appropriate: the report states plainly that the simulation shows the sample behaves as theory predicts and does not prove either verdict.\n\n**Minor issues:**\n- **R1:** The approximate 5% critical value (0.0043) is valid only for the tests of the two individual variables against a fixed N(0,1). The report sets it beside the KS distance for the sum, which uses a normal fitted to the data, where that critical value doesn't apply. The report does note the approximation, and the conclusion is unaffected.\n- **R2:** The script hard-codes the true/false verdicts. That is acceptable, since they rest on the proofs, but it could add assertions so the simulation automatically checks them.\n\nThe review is in `out/review/review.json`."}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":1055,"cache_read_input_tokens":10319,"output_tokens":720,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":5},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":1055},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXpvDhtRsWAcKneS57V1","requestRef":"10030a5d-b16d-4bcc-8d13-7227ca0ca0be","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"da3a2462-56de-4f2d-a59f-8ec6fb69b5a6","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:56:12.295Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0185","sessionId":"f2ed3ba8-8e24-4602-b8fe-f52c7883933a","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}36{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Review","leafUuid":"da3a2462-56de-4f2d-a59f-8ec6fb69b5a6","sessionId":"f2ed3ba8-8e24-4602-b8fe-f52c7883933a"}37{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"f2ed3ba8-8e24-4602-b8fe-f52c7883933a","totalCostUSD":0.10428580000000001,"totalAPIDuration":25437,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":25434,"totalToolDuration":1086,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":26711,"startTime":1793336145591,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":12,"outputTokens":2442,"thinkingTokens":434,"cacheReadInputTokens":30239,"cacheCreationInputTokens":9870,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":9870,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.10428580000000001}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}38
