It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md`. Below is some general advice about doing careful empirical research; it adds nothing specific to this task and you are free to ignore it.\n\nCareful empirical work usually begins by reading the task statement slowly and more than once, because the most common errors in applied research come not from difficult mathematics but from a misunderstanding of what exactly is being asked, which quantity is of interest, and which inputs are legitimately available. It is worth pausing to think about what the quantity of interest actually means, under what conditions it is well defined, and what would make an estimate of it misleading. Many published results have been overturned not because the estimator was wrong but because the sample was not what the authors believed it to be, or because information that should not have been available at the time of a decision had quietly entered the analysis.\n\nData deserve suspicion. Files assembled from several sources often carry inconsistencies: duplicated records, mixed units, shifted dates, columns whose definitions changed mid-sample, or values that were revised after the fact. Good practice is to look at the data before modelling them: distributions, ranges, missing values, identifiers, and whether counts add up. When something looks odd, it is better to document it and decide explicitly how to handle it than to let a default silently decide. The same applies to transformations: scaling, differencing, winsorising and imputing all change what is being estimated, and each deserves a sentence of justification.\n\nSimple baselines are underrated. A naïve or unconditional estimate computed with exactly the same evaluation rule as the main method tells the reader how much the method actually adds and protects against the illusion of progress created by a complicated pipeline. If the elaborate method does not beat the simple one, that is a finding, not a failure.\n\nUncertainty is part of the result. Standard errors must respect the dependence structure of the data; a confidence interval that ignores clustering, serial correlation or overlapping targets is not conservative, it is wrong. Where the sampling distribution is unknown, resampling or simulation can help, but the assumptions behind them should be stated. A result that is not statistically distinguishable from zero should be reported as such, in plain words.\n\nReproducibility is a courtesy to the reader and a safeguard for the author. Keeping the analysis in a script that reads the raw inputs and regenerates every reported number makes it possible to check the work, to find mistakes, and to rerun the analysis when the inputs change. Fixing random seeds, recording software versions and keeping intermediate files out of the final results all reduce the chance that a number in the report cannot be traced back to a computation.\n\nFinally, honesty about limitations is what distinguishes research from advocacy. Every analysis has weaknesses: assumptions that may not hold, data that may not be representative, methods that trade one bias for another. Stating them clearly, together with what would be needed to resolve them, is more valuable than a confident conclusion that the evidence does not support. When a task cannot be completed as specified, saying so, and saying why, is the correct outcome.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. A mini-project on simulated firm data\n\n## Scientific question\nA one-year training programme offered firms a variable number of training hours per employee. Using the simulated firm-level data provided, estimate the effect of one additional training hour per employee on productivity growth in the following year. The estimand is the causal effect of `training_hours` on `productivity_growth` (percentage points per hour) under a selection-on-observables assumption: conditional on the pre-programme information in the file, training hours are as good as randomly assigned, and the effect is linear and homogeneous. Report both the unadjusted association (the required baseline) and the estimate that targets the estimand, with uncertainty. The chain required is: question → data audit → baseline → justified method → results → uncertainty → failure discussion → one figure and one table → short report.\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/firms.csv` — simulated data (generated for this exercise; it is not observed data). One row per firm. Columns: `firm_id` (integer), `skill_index` (standardised index of the workforce's baseline skill, measured in the year *before* the programme), `training_hours` (hours of training per employee received during the programme year), `productivity_growth` (percent change in labour productivity in the year *after* the programme year). Every claim must reference existing keys of `out/results.json`; a claim must only be marked `supported` if the reported numbers actually support it.\n\n## Constraints\n- No network access. Python: `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib available). Do not modify `data/`.\n- Write all deliverables under `out/`. This task is designed to be completed in well under 20 minutes of work; prefer a short, correct chain over an elaborate one.\nfirms.csv\nfirm_id,skill_index,training_hours,productivity_growth\n1748,-2.0128,12.679,12.167\n1202,0.0756,20.0,7.3943\n1860,1.0082,21.618,3.9187\n1341,-1.6259,8.305,13.8987","stderr":"","interrupted":false,"isImage":false,"noOutputExpected":false},"sandboxed":false,"sourceToolAssistantUUID":"cee2455e-3dd1-49e7-8cd6-823f5eeddf55","permissionDecision":{"decision":"accept","source":"config","reasonType":"rule","ruleSource":"cliArg"},"userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RA0022","sessionId":"5de09711-74c5-440f-83f4-4617a27a27bf","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}14{"type":"api-request-blob","sessionId":"5de09711-74c5-440f-83f4-4617a27a27bf","hash":"8a25859c7eda21ab6e6383671f5d020477e075a3ba1152d203d819db4b867e98","message":{"role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"tool_use","id":"toolu_01G8DpcC6Fp6KMcrCYCffCDs","name":"Bash","input":{"command":"cat TASK.md; > out/report.md <<'EOF'\n# F6-conf-04 — Training hours and productivity growth (simulated data)\n\n## Question\nWhat is the causal effect of one more training hour per employee on next-year productivity growth (pp per hour), assuming that conditional on the pre-programme skill index, training hours are as good as random, and that the effect is linear and homogeneous? The unadjusted OLS slope is reported as a baseline.\n\n## Data and exclusions\n`data/firms.csv`: 1,200 rows (simulated). There are no missing values, no duplicate rows and no duplicate `firm_id`s. **Issue:** 12 firms have negative `training_hours` (minimum −7.585), which is impossible. They were excluded, leaving **n = 1,188** for the main estimates. A sensitivity check that keeps all 1,200 rows gives almost the same answer (adjusted slope 0.252 vs 0.254; unadjusted −0.135 vs −0.132). `skill_index` is measured before the programme, so it cannot be affected by training and can safely be used as a control. Its correlation with training hours is 0.68, and with productivity growth it is −0.79 (all rows).\n\n## Method\n- Baseline: OLS of `productivity_growth` on `training_hours` with an intercept.\n- Main model: OLS of `productivity_growth` on `training_hours` and `skill_index`. Under the stated assumption, `skill_index` is the only pre-programme confounder in the file. It is strongly related both to how much training a firm gets (positively) and to its growth (negatively), so leaving it out biases the slope downward.\n- Standard errors: HC1 (heteroskedasticity-robust), with normal-based 95% CIs. Firms are independent rows, so no clustering is needed.\n- Diagnostic: I added skill², hours² and a hours×skill interaction. The training slope barely moves (0.257), and none of the extra terms is significant (smallest p = 0.44), which supports the linear specification.\n\n## Results\n| model | estimate | SE (HC1) | 95% CI |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| Unadjusted | −0.132 | 0.0146 | [−0.160, −0.103] |\n| Adjusted for skill_index | **0.254** | 0.0098 | **[0.234, 0.273]** |\n\nSee `table1.csv` (it also has the all-rows sensitivity rows) and `figure1.png`.\n- The unadjusted association is negative. Adjusting for baseline skill reverses the sign: one additional training hour per employee raises next-year productivity growth by about 0.25 pp.\n- The skill_index coefficient is −4.62 pp per SD.\n- Residual RMSE falls from 3.86 pp (baseline) to 1.98 pp (adjusted).\n- Conclusion code: `positive_effect`.\n\nThe sign reversal is a classic case of confounding. Firms with more skilled workforces received more training but grew more slowly.\n\n## Uncertainty\nThe robust 95% CI for the effect is [0.234, 0.273], which is far from zero. These intervals reflect sampling variation only, given that the model is correct. They do not include any uncertainty about whether the identifying assumption holds, which matters more here. Results are deterministic, and no random seed is used.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- **Identification rests entirely on selection on observables given one index.** Suppose any other factor affects both the training allocation and growth, such as management quality, sector, firm size, prior growth trends, or mean reversion. Then the estimate is biased, and the bias could even be large enough to change the sign, as the switch from the naive to the adjusted estimate shows. This cannot be tested with these data, and I did not run a formal sensitivity analysis for unobserved confounding (e.g., Oster or E-value bounds).\n- **Measurement error in skill_index** would leave residual confounding. Because the confounding runs in the negative direction, the adjusted estimate would then probably be biased downward.\n- **Negative training hours** suggest a recording or simulation problem. If other `training_hours` values have the same kind of error but stayed positive, they could not be detected, and classical measurement error would attenuate the slope. Excluding the 12 rows conditions on the treatment variable, but the sensitivity check shows this does not matter.\n- **Linearity and homogeneity are assumed.** The quadratic/interaction check found no evidence against them, but heterogeneous effects would make the coefficient a variance-weighted average rather than the average treatment effect.\n- **Not checked:** outliers or influence diagnostics beyond residual normality, and overlap or common support in training hours across skill levels (the correlation of 0.68 means extrapolation happens at the extremes).\n- The data are simulated, so nothing here describes real training programmes.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The unadjusted association between training hours and next-year productivity growth is negative (about -0.13 pp/hour, 95% CI excludes zero).\",\"results_keys\":[\"naive_estimate\",\"naive_ci_low\",\"naive_ci_high\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Association only; The training slope barely moves (0.257), and none of the extra terms is significant (smallest p = 0.44), which supports the linear specification.\n\n## Results\n| model | estimate | SE (HC1) | 95% CI |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| Unadjusted | −0.132 | 0.0146 | [−0.160, −0.103] |\n| Adjusted for skill_index | **0.254** | 0.0098 | **[0.234, 0.273]** |\n\nSee `table1.csv` (it also has the all-rows sensitivity rows) and `figure1.png`.\n- The unadjusted association is negative. Excluding the 12 rows conditions on the treatment variable, but the sensitivity check shows this does not matter.\n- **Linearity and homogeneity are assumed.** The quadratic/interaction check found no evidence against them, but heterogeneous effects would make the coefficient a variance-weighted average rather than the average treatment effect.\n- **Not checked:** outliers or influence diagnostics beyond residual normality, and overlap or common support in training hours across skill levels (the correlation of 0.68 means extrapolation happens at the extremes).\n- The data are simulated, so nothing here describes real training programmes.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The unadjusted association between training hours and next-year productivity growth The confidence interval only covers sampling noise, not doubt about that assumption.\n- **Not checked:** I didn't run a formal sensitivity analysis for unmeasured confounders, influence or outlier diagnostics, or whether firms at every skill level got a range of training hours.\n- **Measurement error:** if the skill index is measured with error, some confounding remains.\n- **Simulated data:** nothing here describes real training programmes.\n\nI also added a few extra diagnostic keys to `results.json` beyond the required ones (the error type, the all-rows estimates and the linearity check).\n\nFiles are in `out/`:\n- `results.json`\n- `report.md`\n- `analysis.py`\n- `table1.csv`\n- `figure1.png`\n- `claims.json`"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":576,"cache_read_input_tokens":13617,"output_tokens":777,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":0},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":576},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":0,"requestId":"req_011CgXt8u3SE16Sicv82QaCB","requestRef":"68a61f33-5bc5-4d98-b587-7c11d701ad41","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"bc7dc40d-e39a-46f8-91a6-b0981ea9c4a8","timestamp":"2026-10-30T05:38:25.320Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RA0022","sessionId":"5de09711-74c5-440f-83f4-4617a27a27bf","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}57{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin","leafUuid":"bc7dc40d-e39a-46f8-91a6-b0981ea9c4a8","sessionId":"5de09711-74c5-440f-83f4-4617a27a27bf"}58{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"5de09711-74c5-440f-83f4-4617a27a27bf","totalCostUSD":0.21215820000000002,"totalAPIDuration":64237,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":64231,"totalToolDuration":5567,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":73013,"startTime":1793338632314,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":20,"outputTokens":6742,"thinkingTokens":361,"cacheReadInputTokens":68966,"cacheCreationInputTokens":12689,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":12689,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.21215820000000002}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}59
