It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md`.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. A mini-project on simulated firm data\n\n## Scientific question\nA one-year training programme offered firms a variable number of training hours per employee. Using the simulated firm-level data provided, estimate the effect of one additional training hour per employee on productivity growth in the following year. The estimand is the causal effect of `training_hours` on `productivity_growth` (percentage points per hour) under a selection-on-observables assumption: conditional on the pre-programme information in the file, training hours are as good as randomly assigned, and the effect is linear and homogeneous. Report both the unadjusted association (the required baseline) and the estimate that targets the estimand, with uncertainty. The chain required is: question → data audit → baseline → justified method → results → uncertainty → failure discussion → one figure and one table → short report.\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/firms.csv` — simulated data (generated for this exercise; it is not observed data). The unadjusted OLS slope is reported as the baseline.\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- `data/firms.csv`: 1200 rows, 4 columns. There are no missing values, no duplicate `firm_id`s and no duplicate rows.\n- **Issue:** 12 firms have **negative `training_hours`** (minimum −7.585). Hours per employee cannot be negative, so I treated these values as invalid and **excluded** them, which leaves **n = 1188** for the main estimates. All 12 are low-skill firms (skill_index between −3.0 and −1.0), so they look like the lower tail of a simulated, untruncated hours variable. Two sensitivity checks cover this choice: keeping the rows as they are, and setting their hours to 0. Neither materially changes the result (table1).\n- `skill_index` was measured in the year before the programme, so it is a valid pre-treatment covariate and cannot be a mediator. `productivity_growth` is measured after the programme. In the raw data, the correlations are: skill vs hours +0.69, skill vs growth −0.79, hours vs growth −0.28.\n\n## Method\n1. Baseline: OLS of `productivity_growth ~ training_hours`.\n2. Main model: OLS of `productivity_growth ~ training_hours + skill_index`. Under the stated selection-on-observables assumption, the only available confounder is `skill_index`. It strongly predicts both treatment intensity (higher-skill firms train more) and the outcome (higher-skill firms grow less), so adjusting for it is required. With a linear, homogeneous effect, its coefficient on `training_hours` identifies the estimand.\n3. Standard errors are **HC1 heteroskedasticity-robust**, with 95% normal-approximation CIs. Conventional SEs are also reported in table1. No randomness is used (`random_seed` = null).\n4. Fit metric: in-sample residual RMSE, sqrt(mean(e²)).\n\n## Results\n| model | estimate (pp/hour) | 95% CI |\n|---|---|---|\n| Unadjusted | −0.132 | [−0.160, −0.103] |\n| Adjusted for skill_index (main) | **0.254** | **[0.234, 0.273]** |\n\n- The coefficient on `skill_index` in the main model is −4.62 pp per index unit.\n- Residual RMSE falls from 3.86 pp (unadjusted) to 1.98 pp (adjusted).\n- The unadjusted association is negative, but it reverses sign after adjustment. This is a classic confounding pattern: training went disproportionately to high-skill firms, and those firms have lower productivity growth.\n- **Conclusion: `positive_effect`.** One extra training hour per employee raises next-year productivity growth by about 0.25 pp.\n- Figure 1 (`figure1.png`) shows the scatter with both fitted lines; the adjusted line is evaluated at the mean `skill_index`. Table 1 (`table1.csv`) lists all models, including the sensitivity checks.\n\n## Uncertainty\n- The robust SE of the main effect is 0.0098, giving a 95% CI of [0.234, 0.273], far from zero.\n- Conventional SEs are almost identical (0.0098 vs 0.0098), so heteroskedasticity is not driving the result.\n- Sensitivity checks:\n - Including the negative-hours rows gives 0.252.\n - Setting those hours to 0 gives 0.254.\n - Adding skill_index² gives 0.254.\n- All of these fall inside the main CI.\n- The CI covers sampling uncertainty only. It does not cover uncertainty about the identifying assumption.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- **Identification rests entirely on selection on observables.** If unobserved factors drive both training hours and growth, the estimate is biased in an unknown direction. Examples are management quality, sector, firm size, or anticipated demand shocks. The data contain only one covariate, so this cannot be tested here. The 3.9 → 2.0 RMSE drop and the sign reversal show that confounding by observables is strong, which makes residual confounding by unobservables plausible in any real-world analogue.\n- **Measurement of the confounder:** `skill_index` is a single index. If it measures true skill with error, adjustment is incomplete. Because the confounding runs in the direction that makes the naive estimate too low, incomplete adjustment would likely bias the estimate *downward*. This is not checked.\n- **Functional form:** I assumed a linear, homogeneous effect, as the task specifies. I checked one nonlinearity in the confounder (a quadratic in skill) but did not test nonlinear effects of hours, effect heterogeneity by skill, or overlap/common support in detail. If effects are heterogeneous, the OLS coefficient is a variance-weighted average and not the ATE.\n- **Negative hours:** I excluded these 12 rows as invalid. If they signal a broader recording or simulation problem with `training_hours`, such as noise added to all values, then the treatment is measured with error and the coefficient would be attenuated. I cannot verify this. The sensitivity checks show the 12 rows themselves do not matter.\n- **Other unchecked points:** influential observations and outliers, beyond the summary statistics. Interference between firms and timing issues, such as growth partly occurring during the programme year, also cannot be assessed from these data.\n- The data are simulated, so the result says nothing about real training programmes.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The unadjusted association between training hours and next-year productivity growth is negative you adjust for baseline skill, more training raises productivity growth: about **+0.254 percentage points (pp) per extra training hour**. The 95% confidence interval is 0.234 to 0.273, using heteroskedasticity-robust (HC1) standard errors, so the conclusion is `positive_effect`. The replication script runs end to end and produces all the required outputs.\n\n**The unadjusted slope points the other way: −0.132 pp per hour** (95% CI −0.160 to −0.103). The sign flips because baseline skill drives both variables:\n- Higher-skill firms received more training (correlation +0.69).\n- Higher-skill firms also had lower productivity growth (coefficient on `skill_index` is −4.62 pp per index unit).\n\nSince `skill_index` was measured before the programme, adjusting for it is legitimate, and it's the only possible adjustment given the data. Adjusting halves the size of the residuals, from 3.86 pp to 1.98 pp.\n\n**Data issue:** 12 firms have negative training hours, which is impossible, so I excluded them; the main estimates use 1,188 of 1,200 firms. Including them as they are (0.252) or setting their hours to 0 (0.254) barely moves the estimate. Adding a squared skill term or switching to conventional standard errors doesn't change it either.\n\n**Limitations:** the causal reading depends entirely on the assumption that baseline skill is the only confounder, and with one covariate in the file that can't be tested. Other untested risks, all discussed in the report:\n- Skill may be measured with error, so the adjustment could be incomplete.\n- The effect may vary across firms or not be linear in hours.\n- The negative values may mean all training hours were recorded with noise, which would shrink the estimate.\n\nThe data are simulated, so the result says nothing about real training programmes.\n\nI briefly created a stray `data/out/` folder by mistake and removed it; `data/` is otherwise untouched.\n\nFiles are in `out/`:\n- `analysis.py`\n- `results.json`\n- `table1.csv`\n- `figure1.png`\n- `report.md`\n- `claims.json`"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":264,"cache_read_input_tokens":12308,"output_tokens":705,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":0},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":264},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":0,"requestId":"req_011CgXmGBG9SfwGCQFqisRgG","requestRef":"81634c75-288e-464d-8386-f14c8cf2d16a","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"359ff483-1c45-4711-93ce-f496fa4a69e1","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:08:15.290Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0021","sessionId":"056f916a-6ec1-41ad-be34-fff1cc555557","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}53{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin","leafUuid":"359ff483-1c45-4711-93ce-f496fa4a69e1","sessionId":"056f916a-6ec1-41ad-be34-fff1cc555557"}54{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"056f916a-6ec1-41ad-be34-fff1cc555557","totalCostUSD":0.1957328,"totalAPIDuration":59571,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":59565,"totalToolDuration":3191,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":62957,"startTime":1793333232339,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":18,"outputTokens":6526,"thinkingTokens":318,"cacheReadInputTokens":49004,"cacheCreationInputTokens":11068,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":11068,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.1957328}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}55
