The estimands are the real-time out-of-sample RMSE and MAE, over 8 quarterly origins and horizons h ∈ {1, 2} quarters, of (a) the naive forecast and (b) one model of your choice, evaluated against the *first-release* value of each target quarter, together with the relative improvement 1 − RMSE_model / RMSE_naive per horizon, and the mean absolute revision between the first release and the current value of the h = 1 target quarters.\n\n## Inputs\nAll files concern the series A191RL1Q225SBEA — US real GDP, percent change from preceding period, seasonally adjusted annual rate, quarterly (BEA via FRED/ALFRED); quarters are dated by their first day. See `data/README.md` for URLs, retrieval times (2026-10-30 UTC), SHA-256 and licence.\n- `data/vintages/A191RL1Q225SBEA_vintage_<YYYY-MM-DD>.csv` — 8 files, one per forecast origin (2024-01-31, 2024-04-30, 2024-07-31, 2024-10-31, 2025-01-31, 2025-04-30, 2025-07-31, 2025-12-31): the complete series exactly as it was published on that date (ALFRED; header `observation_date,A191RL1Q225SBEA_<yyyymmdd>`; values as of that date; the last row is the most recently published quarter at that date).\n- `data/current_vintage.csv` — the same series as published on 2026-10-30 (FRED; header `observation_date,A191RL1Q225SBEA`), containing all revisions known today.\n- `data/first_release.csv` — columns `quarter`, `first_release_value`, `first_release_vintage_date`: the first published value of each quarter from 2023Q3 to 2026Q3 and the (month-end) vintage date at which it was first available.\n\n## Information-availability rules\n- The 8 forecast origins are the 8 vintage dates. At origin d, **the only usable target data are the contents of the vintage file dated d** (its training sample ends at the last quarter in that file, and all values, including those of earlier quarters, are the ones in that file). `current_vintage.csv` must not be used for estimation or as forecast input at any origin; it is provided only to compute the revision statistic and for discussion.\n- Horizons: h = 1 and h = 2 quarters after the last quarter contained in the origin's vintage file.\n- Actuals: the first-release value of the target quarter from `data/first_release.csv`.\n- Naive baseline: for both horizons, the forecast is the last value in the origin's vintage file.\n\n## Required outputs\n- `out/forecasts.csv` — one row per (origin, horizon, model), columns: `origin_date` (the vintage date, YYYY-MM-DD), `target_date` (quarter start, YYYY-MM-DD), `horizon` (1 or 2), `forecast`, `actual` (first-release value), `model` (`naive` or the value of `model_name`), `vintage_date` (the vintage file used), `train_last_date` (last quarter in the training data), `train_last_value` (the value of that quarter in the training data used), `n_train` (number of observations in the training data used). Expected: 8 × 2 × 2 = 32 rows.\n- `out/results.json` with the keys:\n\n| key | type | unit | meaning |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| `task_id` | string | — | \"F3-conf-02\" |\n| `model_name` | string | — | short name of your model, used in the `model` column |\n| `model_description` | string | — | one-sentence specification (lags, estimation sample, method) |\n| `n_origins` | integer | — | 8 |\n| `first_origin`, `last_origin` | string | date | first and last vintage dates |\n| `rmse_naive_h1`, `mae_naive_h1`, `rmse_naive_h2`, `mae_naive_h2` | number | percentage points (annualised growth) | naive errors vs first releases |\n| `rmse_model_h1`, `mae_model_h1`, `rmse_model_h2`, `mae_model_h2` | number | percentage points | your model's errors vs first releases |\n| `rel_improvement_rmse_h1`, `rel_improvement_rmse_h2` | number | fraction | 1 − rmse_model / rmse_naive |\n| `mean_abs_revision_h1_targets` | number | percentage points | mean over the 8 h = 1 target quarters of \\|current-vintage value − first-release value\\| |\n| `feasibility` | string | — | \"complete\", \"partial\" or \"infeasible\" |\n| `feasibility_reason` | string or null | — | explanation if not complete |\n| `data_issues` | array of {\"issue\",\"handling\"} | — | data problems detected and how handled (empty list if none) |\n| `n_input_rows` | object | — | data rows read per input file (excluding headers), keyed by path relative to `data/` (e.g. \"current_vintage.csv\", \"first_release.csv\", \"vintages/A191RL1Q225SBEA_vintage_2024-01-31.csv\") |\n| `n_analysed` | integer | — | observations in the last origin's training data |\n| `random_seed` | integer or null | — | seed used, if any |\n\n- `out/report.md` with the sections: Question; Data and exclusions; Method; Results; Uncertainty; Limitations and open issues.\n- `out/analysis.py` — running `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root must regenerate `out/results.json` and `out/forecasts.csv` from `data/` only, deterministically.\n- `out/claims.json` — a list of the central claims of the report: [{\"id\": \"C1\", \"text\": \"...\", \"results_keys\": [\"...\"], \"status\": \"supported\"|\"unsupported\"|\"not_evaluated\", \"caveat\": \"...\"}].\n\n## Constraints\n- No network access. Python: `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels available). Does a simple AR(1) model beat the naive (last value) forecast? Forecasts are scored against the first-release value of each target quarter.\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- Inputs: 8 ALFRED vintage files (307–314 rows each), `current_vintage.csv` (318 rows) and `first_release.csv` (13 rows). Row counts are in `n_input_rows`. All SHA-256 hashes match `data/README.md`. There are no missing values, no duplicate dates and no gaps (`out/state/data_audit.md`).\n- Information rule: at origin d, only the vintage file dated d is used. Its training sample ends at the last quarter in that file, and every value comes from that file. `current_vintage.csv` is used only for `mean_abs_revision_h1_targets`. For each actual, the script asserts that its first-release date falls after its origin.\n- Exclusions apply to the AR estimation sample only; `out/exclusions.csv` shows them for the last origin. The vintage has 314 rows. Step 1 drops the 152 dependent quarters before 1985Q2. Step 2 drops dependent quarters 2020Q2–2020Q4, i.e. the COVID outliers of about −28% and +35% appearing as y_t or y_{t−1}. That leaves 159 observations (`n_analysed`). The naive forecast uses only the last value of each vintage. Its `n_train` column in `forecasts.csv` records the full vintage length.\n- Data issues (`data_issues`): (i) the COVID outliers, handled as above; (ii) the 8th origin is 2025-12-31 because the shutdown delayed the 2025Q3 advance estimate, and the 2025Q4 first release is dated 2026-02-28. Chronology is respected in both cases.\n\n## Method\n- Naive: for h = 1 and h = 2, the forecast is the last value in the origin's vintage.\n- Model (`model_name` = `ar1_1985_excovid`, see `model_description`): an AR(1) with intercept, estimated by OLS at each origin on that origin's vintage. The dependent sample runs from 1985Q2 to the last quarter, minus 2020Q2–2020Q4. The h = 2 forecast iterates the AR(1).\n- The specification was fixed before any out-of-sample errors were computed (`out/state/log.md`). No alternatives were tried, so no specification search took place.\n- At the last origin the coefficients are intercept 1.77 and φ 0.33 (`ar1_coefficients_last_origin`).\n- Errors are forecast minus first-release actual. RMSE and MAE are computed over the 8 origins per horizon. The procedure is deterministic, so there is no seed (`random_seed` = null).\n\n## Results\n| | RMSE h=1 | MAE h=1 | RMSE h=2 | MAE h=2 |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| naive | 2.010 (`rmse_naive_h1`) | 1.687 (`mae_naive_h1`) | 2.265 (`rmse_naive_h2`) | 1.812 (`mae_naive_h2`) |\n| AR(1) | 1.484 (`rmse_model_h1`) | 1.233 (`mae_model_h1`) | 1.398 (`rmse_model_h2`) | 1.030 (`mae_model_h2`) |\n\nUnits are percentage points of annualised growth.\n- Relative RMSE improvement of the AR(1) over naive: 0.262 at h=1 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h1`) and 0.383 at h=2 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h2`).\n- Mean absolute revision between first release and the current (2026-10-30) value for the 8 h=1 target quarters (2024Q1–2025Q4): 0.5625 pp (`mean_abs_revision_h1_targets`). That is roughly a third of the size of the h=1 forecast errors.\n- Over this window the AR(1) beat naive. Naive suffers from the volatile quarter-to-quarter swings of 2025, e.g. the −0.3 first print for 2025Q1 followed by +3.0. The AR(1) pulls forecasts toward the post-1985 mean of about 2.7%.\n\n## Uncertainty\n- Only 8 forecast errors per horizon are available, so the accuracy estimates are very imprecise.\n- Supplementary Diebold–Mariano statistics on squared-error differences (variance with h−1 autocovariance lags, compared to a t(7) reference):\n - h=1: DM = 1.59, p = 0.155 (`supp_dm_stat_h1`, `supp_dm_pvalue_t7_h1`).\n - h=2: DM = 1.86, p = 0.105 (`supp_dm_stat_h2`, `supp_dm_pvalue_t7_h2`).\n- So the improvement is **not statistically significant at 5%**.\n- The AR(1) had the lower squared error at 5 of 8 origins for h=1 (`supp_n_origins_model_lower_sqerr_h1`) and at 8 of 8 for h=2 (`supp_n_origins_model_lower_sqerr_h2`).\n- The h=2 errors come from overlapping 2-step forecasts and are autocorrelated. The small-sample DM test is also only approximate.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- The evaluation window covers 8 origins (2024–2025) and is not representative of other periods. The ranking could reverse in a calmer period.\n- First-release actuals are noisy. Revisions average 0.56 pp (`mean_abs_revision_h1_targets`), reaching 1.2 pp for 2025Q4, so scores against current values would differ. These were not computed because the task specifies first-release actuals.\n- The AR estimation sample start (1985) and the COVID exclusion are judgment calls fixed a priori. No sensitivity analysis was run.\n- `n_train` for the naive model is defined as the vintage length, even though the naive forecast uses only one value. This convention is documented here.\n- Process note: an empty directory was briefly created by mistake under `data/` and removed at once. No data file was changed, and the hashes were re-verified.\norigin_date,target_date,horizon,forecast,actual,model,vintage_date,train_last_date,train_last_value,n_train\n2024-01-31,2024-01-01,1,3.3,1.6,naive,2024-01-31,2023-10-01,3.3,307\n2024-01-31,2024-01-01,1,2.8594858907,1.6,ar1_1985_excovid,2024-01-31,2023-10-01,3.3,152\n2024-01-31,2024-04-01,2,3.3,2.8,naive,2024-01-31,2023-10-01,3.3,307\n2024-01-31,2024-04-01,2,2.7095380799,2.8,ar1_1985_excovid,2024-01-31,2023-10-01,3.3,152\n2024-04-30,2024-04-01,1,1.6,2.8,naive,2024-04-30,2024-01-01,1.6,308\n2024-04-30,2024-04-01,1,2.2739273039,2.8,ar1_1985_excovid,2024-04-30,2024-01-01,1.6,153\n2024-04-30,2024-07-01,2,1.6,2.8,naive,2024-04-30,2024-01-01,1.6,308\n2024-04-30,2024-07-01,2,2.5027880684,2.8,ar1_1985_excovid,2024-04-30,2024-01-01,1.6,153\n2024-07-31,2024-07-01,1,2.8,2.8,naive,2024-07-31,2024-04-01,2.8,309\n2024-07-31,2024-07-01,1,2.683914729,2.8,ar1_1985_excovid,2024-07-31,2024-04-01,2.8,154\n2024-07-31,2024-10-01,2,2.8,2.3,naive,2024-07-31,2024-04-01,2.8,309\n2024-07-31,2024-10-01,2,2.6446265316,2.3,ar1_1985_excovid,2024-07-31,2024-04-01,2.8,154\n2024-10-31,2024-10-01,1,2.8,2.3,naive,2024-10-31,2024-07-01,2.8,310\n2024-10-31,2024-10-01,1,2.7052430423,2.3,ar1_1985_excovid,2024-10-31,2024-07-01,2.8,155\n2024-10-31,2025-01-01,2,2.8,-0.3,naive,2024-10-31,2024-07-01,2.8,310\n2024-10-31,2025-01-01,2,2.6728789463,-0.3,ar1_1985_excovid,2024-10-31,2024-07-01,2.8,155\n2025-01-31,2025-01-01,1,2.3,-0.3,naive,2025-01-31,2024-10-01,2.3,311\n2025-01-31,2025-01-01,1,2.5331955789,-0.3,ar1_1985_excovid,2025-01-31,2024-10-01,2.3,156\n2025-01-31,2025-04-01,2,2.3,3.0,naive,2025-01-31,2024-10-01,2.3,311\n2025-01-31,2025-04-01,2,2.6128140336,3.0,ar1_1985_excovid,2025-01-31,2024-10-01,2.3,156\n2025-04-30,2025-04-01,1,-0.3,3.0,naive,2025-04-30,2025-01-01,-0.3,312\n2025-04-30,2025-04-01,1,1.6237209695,3.0,ar1_1985_excovid,2025-04-30,2025-01-01,-0.3,157\n2025-04-30,2025-07-01,2,-0.3,4.3,naive,2025-04-30,2025-01-01,-0.3,312\n2025-04-30,2025-07-01,2,2.2831285554,4.3,ar1_1985_excovid,2025-04-30,2025-01-01,-0.3,157\n2025-07-31,2025-07-01,1,3.0,4.3,naive,2025-07-31,2025-04-01,3.0,313\n2025-07-31,2025-07-01,1,2.761291972,4.3,ar1_1985_excovid,2025-07-31,2025-04-01,3.0,158\n2025-07-31,2025-10-01,2,3.0,1.4,naive,2025-07-31,2025-04-01,3.0,313\n2025-07-31,2025-10-01,2,2.6808360098,1.4,ar1_1985_excovid,2025-07-31,2025-04-01,3.0,158\n2025-12-31,2025-10-01,1,4.3,1.4,naive,2025-12-31,2025-07-01,4.3,314\n2025-12-31,2025-10-01,1,3.2106445759,1.4,ar1_1985_excovid,2025-12-31,2025-07-01,4.3,159\n2025-12-31,2026-01-01,2,4.3,2.0,naive,2025-12-31,2025-07-01,4.3,314\n2025-12-31,2026-01-01,2,2.8460844491,2.0,ar1_1985_excovid,2025-12-31,2025-07-01,4.3,159\nstep,rule,n_before,n_after,n_removed,rationale\n1,drop The remaining issues are minor wording and robustness points.\"\n}\nEOF\n~/wp29/venv/bin/python -m json.tool out/review/review.json >/dev/null && echo ok","description":"Write review JSON and validate"}}]}}33{"type":"api-request","sessionId":"438de47d-c51c-4a12-a1ff-41256744dd61","id":"9b5f3097-11dc-4dc0-9f2e-3f6733ad6914","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:21:38.814Z","version":"2.1.314","querySource":"sdk","shapeHash":"ee8599acb1caa167241af5b631e98665f2895a101d7fa946882ba7063c448886","params":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","betas":["claude-code-20250219","interleaved-thinking-2025-05-14","context-management-2025-06-27","prompt-caching-scope-2026-01-05","per-turn-control-2026-07-01","thinking-token-count-2026-05-13","mid-conversation-system-clear-at-2026-08-21","effort-2025-11-24","thinking-binding-controls-2026-08-01","thinking-display-updates-2026-08-18","cache-diagnosis-2026-04-07"],"max_tokens":128000,"thinking":{"type":"adaptive","display":"updates"},"context_management":{"edits":[{"type":"clear_thinking_20251015","keep":"all"}]},"output_config":{"effort":"medium"}},"base":"70fa284d-5da6-443b-9943-cfe4fac94904","keep":8,"tail":["2a2bec742523a191f77e2c5410256a99437b8c598183403d233552dbef779b9d","a9145f0b4075a94e302fc9e718f0733dff589e83598eae0b4f0c46a618786625"],"cacheControl":[{"path":["system",0],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}},{"path":["system",1],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}},{"path":["messages",9,"content",0],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}}],"requestDigest":"3fca8263763a2023cfe5240a22028fcdb6fa96130a54c756db7f6a6a4c7ec50c"}34{"parentUuid":"c568fb5e-2b75-4c97-aba1-d30b7562a84d","isSidechain":false,"message":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","id":"msg_011CgXnHvHubXfysHqbjLNtz","type":"message","role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"thinking","thinking":"","signature":"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"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":1492,"cache_read_input_tokens":16882,"output_tokens":671,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":25},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":1492},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"thinkingDurationMs":5308,"thinkingDisplay":"updates","apiBlockIndex":0,"requestId":"req_011CgXnHv2Xno645WJaodn1g","requestRef":"9b5f3097-11dc-4dc0-9f2e-3f6733ad6914","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"79a1750c-322e-4a67-9dee-047ccdc11945","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:21:45.459Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0068","sessionId":"438de47d-c51c-4a12-a1ff-41256744dd61","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}35{"parentUuid":"79a1750c-322e-4a67-9dee-047ccdc11945","isSidechain":false,"message":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","id":"msg_011CgXnHvHubXfysHqbjLNtz","type":"message","role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"text","text":"My verdict is **accept**, with three minor issues; I wrote the review to `out/review/review.json`.\n\nI re-ran `out/analysis.py` in a scratch copy, and it reproduced `results.json` and `forecasts.csv` exactly. All required keys are present and `forecasts.csv` has the expected 32 rows. Reading the code, I found no breach of the information rules:\n- **Inputs:** each origin uses only its own vintage file.\n- **Current vintage:** `current_vintage.csv` is used only for the revision statistic.\n- **Actuals:** they come from the first-release file, and the code checks that each was published after its origin.\n- **Naive forecast:** it is the last value of each vintage, as specified.\n\nThe numbers are consistent:\n- **Row counts** match the files.\n- **Exclusions:** 314 → 162 → 159 observations at the last origin.\n- **Revision statistic:** 0.5625 pp, which I checked by hand.\n- **Origin counts:** the model has the lower squared error at 5 of 8 origins for one quarter ahead and 8 of 8 for two quarters ahead, as reported.\n- **Significance:** the report correctly says the gain is not significant at 5% and gives caveats for having only 8 origins.\n\nThe three minor issues:\n1. **R1:** Most of the model's 26% and 38% gain comes from one or two origins, mainly 2025-04-30, where the naive forecast missed the swing after 2025Q1's −0.3% first print. The report doesn't say how much the result rests on these.\n2. **R2:** The report calls the 0.56 pp revision \"roughly a third\" of the one-quarter-ahead errors. That is true against the naive forecast's average error (1.69) but not the model's (1.23, a ratio of about 0.46).\n3. **R3:** The stated reason for the 2025-12-31 origin (a federal-shutdown delay) is outside knowledge that the data files can't confirm."}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":1492,"cache_read_input_tokens":16882,"output_tokens":671,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":25},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":1492},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXnHv2Xno645WJaodn1g","requestRef":"9b5f3097-11dc-4dc0-9f2e-3f6733ad6914","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"6325bda5-eef0-4b85-aa40-fc57aae62ba2","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:21:45.463Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0068","sessionId":"438de47d-c51c-4a12-a1ff-41256744dd61","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}36{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Review","leafUuid":"6325bda5-eef0-4b85-aa40-fc57aae62ba2","sessionId":"438de47d-c51c-4a12-a1ff-41256744dd61"}37{"type":"atis-latch","atis":"","sessionId":"438de47d-c51c-4a12-a1ff-41256744dd61"}38{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"438de47d-c51c-4a12-a1ff-41256744dd61","totalCostUSD":0.16225799999999999,"totalAPIDuration":36906,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":36902,"totalToolDuration":853,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":37866,"startTime":1793334067608,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":12,"outputTokens":3470,"thinkingTokens":1026,"cacheReadInputTokens":42300,"cacheCreationInputTokens":16870,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":16870,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.16225799999999999}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}39
