If no counterexample is provided, an empty object. |\n| `statement_b_true` | boolean | — | verdict on proposition B (the baseline check) |\n| `feasibility` | string | — | \"complete\", \"partial\" or \"infeasible\" |\n| `feasibility_reason` | string or null | — | explanation if not complete |\n| `data_issues` | array of {\"issue\",\"handling\"} | — | data problems detected and how handled (empty list if none) |\n| `n_input_rows` | object | — | {\"propositions.csv\": rows read, \"design.csv\": rows read} |\n| `n_analysed` | integer or null | — | sample size of the simulated counterexample sample |\n| `random_seed` | integer or null | — | seed used |\n\n- `out/counterexample.csv` — columns `x`, `y`: the simulated sample of size n from the counterexample construction (only if a counterexample is provided).\n- `out/argument.md` — the mathematical argument: the proof sketch for the true proposition(s) and the explicit counterexample (with the reasoning that its marginals are normal and its sum is not) for the false proposition(s).\n- `out/report.md` with the sections: Question; Data and exclusions; Method; Results; Uncertainty; Limitations and open issues. State explicitly what the numerical illustration establishes and what it does not.\n- `out/analysis.py` — running `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root must regenerate `out/results.json` and `out/counterexample.csv` from `data/` only, deterministically.\n- `out/claims.json` — a list of the central claims of the report: [{\"id\": \"C1\", \"text\": \"...\", \"results_keys\": [\"...\"], \"status\": \"supported\"|\"unsupported\"|\"not_evaluated\", \"caveat\": \"...\"}].\n\n## Constraints\n- No network access. Python: `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels available). Do not modify `data/`.\n- This task is designed to be completed in well under 20 minutes of work.\ntotal 7728\ndrwxr-xr-x@ 11 simon-pierreboucher staff 352 oct. 30 00:54 .\ndrwxr-xr-x 7 simon-pierreboucher staff 224 oct. 30 00:52 ..\n-rw-r--r--@ 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 3115 oct. 30 00:53 analysis.py\n-rw-r--r--@ 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 2424 oct. 30 00:53 argument.md\n-rw-r--r--@ 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 1620 oct. 30 00:54 claims.json\n-rw-r--r--@ 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 3926247 oct. 30 00:53 counterexample.csv\n-rw-r--r--@ 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 195 oct. 30 00:53 exclusions.csv\n-rw-r--r--@ 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 4258 oct. 30 00:54 report.md\n-rw-r--r--@ 1 simon-pierreboucher staff 1265 oct. 30 00:53 results.json\ndrwxr-xr-x 2 simon-pierreboucher staff 64 oct. 30 00:54 review\ndrwxr-xr-x@ 8 simon-pierreboucher staff 256 oct. 30 00:53 state\n{\n \"task_id\": \"F5-conf-03\",\n \"statement_true\": false,\n \"counterexample_provided\": true,\n \"counterexample_values\": {\n \"construction\": \"X ~ N(0,1); S independent of X with P(S=1)=P(S=-1)=1/2; Y = S*X. The characteristic function of N(μ, σ²) is φ(t) = exp(iμt − σ²t²/2) (σ = 0 gives a constant, included).\nBy independence, φ_{X+Y}(t) = E[e^{itX} e^{itY}] = φ_X(t) φ_Y(t) = exp(i(μ1+μ2)t − (σ1²+σ2²)t²/2),\nwhich is the characteristic function of N(μ1+μ2, σ1²+σ2²). By the uniqueness theorem for characteristic functions, X + Y has that law. ∎\n\n## Proposition A (FALSE): normal marginals alone do not make X + Y normal\n\nIndependence (or, more generally, joint normality) is essential. Counterexample:\n\n**Construction.** Let X ~ N(0,1) and let S be independent of X with P(S = 1) = P(S = −1) = 1/2. Define Y = S·X.\n\n**Marginals are normal.** X ~ N(0,1) by definition. For any Borel set B,\nP(Y ∈ B) = ½ P(X ∈ B) + ½ P(−X ∈ B) = P(X ∈ B), since −X ~ X (symmetry of N(0,1)) and S ⟂ X. So Y ~ N(0,1).\n(Moreover Cov(X, Y) = E[S]E[X²] = 0: X and Y are uncorrelated but dependent, since |X| = |Y|; (X, Y) is not jointly normal.)\n\n**Sum is not normal.** X + Y = (1 + S)X, which equals 0 when S = −1 and 2X when S = 1. Hence\nP(X + Y = 0) ≥ P(S = −1) = 1/2.\nA normal law N(μ, σ²) with σ > 0 is continuous and gives probability 0 to every point; a degenerate normal (σ = 0) is a.s. constant. X + Y is neither: it has an atom of mass exactly 1/2 at 0 (P(2X = 0) = 0), and it is not a.s. constant since Var(X + Y) = ½·Var(2X) = 2 > 0. Therefore X + Y is not normally distributed — not even in the degenerate sense allowed by the statement. ∎\n\nIts law is the mixture ½δ₀ + ½N(0,4), with mean 0 and variance 2. The KS distance between this law and N(0, 2) is 0.25 (the mixture CDF jumps from 0.25 to 0.75 at 0, where Φ = 0.5).\n\n**Remark.** The simpler choice Y = −X gives X + Y ≡ 0, a constant, which the statement explicitly counts as normal, so it is *not* a counterexample; that is why the randomized sign is used.\n\n## Numerical illustration (not the proof)\n`out/analysis.py` draws n = 100000 pairs from this construction with numpy default_rng(seed = 20261029) and writes them to `out/counterexample.csv`; summaries are in `out/results.json` → `counterexample_values` (marginal means ≈ 0, sds ≈ 1; KS distance of the sum to its fitted normal ≈ 0.25, versus ≈ 0.002 for the independent baseline).\n# F5-conf-03 — Sums of normally distributed random variables\n\n## Question\nProposition A: if X and Y are each normal, X + Y is normal (constants count as normal). Proposition B: if X and Y are independent and each normal, X + Y is normal. Decide each, with a proof sketch or an explicit counterexample, and illustrate any counterexample numerically with the design seed and n.\n\n## Data and exclusions\nInputs: `data/propositions.csv` (2 rows) and `data/design.csv` (2 rows) (`n_input_rows`); SHA-256 hashes match `bundle.json` (see `out/state/data_audit.md`). Design: seed 20261029 (`random_seed`), n = 100000 (`n_analysed`). No data issues were found (`data_issues` = []). No exclusions: the simulated sample is kept in full (`out/exclusions.csv`, 0 removed).\n\n## Method\nThe verdicts rest on mathematical arguments given in full in `out/argument.md`:\n- B: characteristic functions multiply under independence, and the product of two normal characteristic functions is a normal characteristic function; uniqueness then gives the result.\n- A: counterexample X ~ N(0,1), S an independent random sign (±1 with probability 1/2 each), Y = S·X. Y ~ N(0,1) by symmetry, but X + Y = (1+S)X has an atom of mass 1/2 at 0 and variance 2. So it is neither a continuous normal nor a constant (`counterexample_values.construction`). Y = −X would *not* work, because the constant sum it gives counts as normal under A.\n\nNumerical illustration (`out/analysis.py`): n pairs drawn with `numpy.random.default_rng(seed)` and written to `out/counterexample.csv`. For x, y and x+y we report sample means and SDs (ddof = 1) and the Kolmogorov–Smirnov distance between x+y and the normal with the sample mean and SD of x+y. As a baseline under the same rule, an independent pair X, Y ~ N(0,1) was simulated (separate stream `default_rng([seed, 1])`).\n\n## Results\n- Proposition A is **false** (`statement_true` = false), and a concrete counterexample is given (`counterexample_provided` = true).\n- Proposition B is **true** (`statement_b_true` = true).\n- Simulated counterexample (n = 100000, `counterexample_values.n`): mean_x = −0.0033, sd_x = 0.9982, mean_y = −0.0002, sd_y = 0.9982 (`counterexample_values.mean_x/sd_x/mean_y/sd_y`). Both are consistent with N(0,1). Marginal KS distances to fitted normals are 0.0021 and 0.0020 (`diagnostic_ks_x_vs_normal`, `diagnostic_ks_y_vs_normal`).\n- Sum: mean_sum = −0.0036 and sd_sum = 1.4059 (theory: 0 and √2 ≈ 1.414) (`counterexample_values.mean_sum/sd_sum`). The KS distance to its fitted normal is 0.2508 (`counterexample_values.ks_sum_vs_normal`), matching the theoretical value 0.25. The fraction of sums exactly equal to 0 is 0.5005 (`diagnostic_frac_sum_exactly_zero`).\n- Baseline: for independent normals, the KS distance of the sum is 0.0017 (`baseline_independent_ks_sum_vs_normal`). That is about 150 times smaller than for the counterexample, and below the rough 5% scale 1.358/√n = 0.0043 (`diagnostic_ks_critical_value_alpha_0.05`).\n\n## Uncertainty\nThe verdicts are deductive and carry no statistical uncertainty. The simulated summaries vary with the sample. Their sampling SD at n = 1e5 is about 0.003 for means and about 0.002 for SDs. A KS distance under a correct normal null is O(1/√n) ≈ 0.004. The observed 0.25 is therefore about 60 times that scale, and the departure from normality is unambiguous. The 1.358/√n scale assumes a fully specified null. Because the mean and SD are estimated (Lilliefors setting), the true critical value is smaller, so that scale is conservative and used only as a rough guide.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- **What the simulation does and does not establish.** It shows that the construction behaves as the proof predicts: normal-looking marginals, a sum with an atom of about 1/2 at 0, and a KS distance of about 0.25. It does **not** prove that the marginals are exactly normal or that B holds in general. Finite samples cannot do that; the proofs in `out/argument.md` do.\n- The marginal KS checks for x and y are diagnostics only. Exact normality of Y follows from the symmetry argument.\n- The additional `diagnostic_*` and `baseline_*` keys in `out/results.json` go beyond the required set. They are included for transparency.\n- No other open issues.\nstep,rule,n_before,n_after,n_removed,rationale\n1,none: simulated sample of design size n kept in full,100000,100000,0,no filtering Only minor wording issues remain.\"\n}\nEOF\n~/wp29/venv/bin/python -m json.tool out/review/review.json >/dev/null && echo ok"}}]}}31{"type":"api-request","sessionId":"c7670b91-74e2-45be-8a16-963d3bd75c80","id":"e0ad4811-067d-4fc6-a622-8c90c84d7b0b","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:54:52.345Z","version":"2.1.314","querySource":"sdk","shapeHash":"2dfa6b89afa38f23a60445a0bf45f43b3152262c801a625bf194bb9f20e3f602","params":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","betas":["claude-code-20250219","interleaved-thinking-2025-05-14","context-management-2025-06-27","prompt-caching-scope-2026-01-05","per-turn-control-2026-07-01","thinking-token-count-2026-05-13","mid-conversation-system-clear-at-2026-08-21","effort-2025-11-24","thinking-binding-controls-2026-08-01","thinking-display-updates-2026-08-18","cache-diagnosis-2026-04-07"],"max_tokens":128000,"thinking":{"type":"adaptive","display":"updates"},"context_management":{"edits":[{"type":"clear_thinking_20251015","keep":"all"}]},"output_config":{"effort":"medium"}},"base":"3a8b1d2c-547b-404c-b45e-162aa1ad8cfb","keep":8,"tail":["69c80fbc740490b5d32d57d5d85ccd1bf3cc6f911a2d777a35ca58848fd69bfc","d3a2d0aec03d6f5cc45b5acfe4e72f0b6d66705f24a4b6c6e2606ac2827a7e65"],"cacheControl":[{"path":["system",0],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}},{"path":["system",1],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}},{"path":["messages",9,"content",0],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}}],"requestDigest":"c1e1adbca48d8c6feabbf4227b39c577f271f081b2ee6e6eb3b44981e9b15c68"}32{"parentUuid":"0c5ed208-87ac-47d7-9b45-4627c93fa87e","isSidechain":false,"message":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","id":"msg_011CgXppsS76Cx1vqMivqjGm","type":"message","role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"thinking","thinking":"","signature":"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"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":1171,"cache_read_input_tokens":10773,"output_tokens":747,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":47},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":1171},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"thinkingDurationMs":6288,"thinkingDisplay":"updates","apiBlockIndex":0,"requestId":"req_011CgXpps7WQYUurAu3DtoMJ","requestRef":"e0ad4811-067d-4fc6-a622-8c90c84d7b0b","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"bad4d1df-74dd-4bc5-83ae-592754dabad1","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:54:59.753Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0182","sessionId":"c7670b91-74e2-45be-8a16-963d3bd75c80","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}33{"parentUuid":"bad4d1df-74dd-4bc5-83ae-592754dabad1","isSidechain":false,"message":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","id":"msg_011CgXppsS76Cx1vqMivqjGm","type":"message","role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"text","text":"I'm accepting this submission: I found only two minor issues and nothing critical or major. The review is saved to `out/review/review.json`.\n\n- **Reproducibility:** I re-ran `out/analysis.py` in a scratch copy. It regenerates `results.json` and `counterexample.csv` byte-for-byte. It reads only `data/` and uses the design seed (20261029) and sample size (n = 100,000).\n- **Required outputs:** every required key is present and matches the recomputation.\n- **Proposition A (false):** the counterexample takes X ~ N(0,1), draws an independent random sign S = ±1, and sets Y = S·X. It is mathematically valid. Y is exactly N(0,1) by symmetry. X + Y is 0 half the time and 2X otherwise, so it is neither a continuous normal nor a constant. That means it fails even under A's rule that a constant counts as normal. The argument also explains correctly why the simpler Y = −X would not work, since its sum is a constant.\n- **Simulation:** the numbers agree with the theory. The KS distance of the sum from a fitted normal is 0.2508, against a theoretical 0.25. About 50.05% of sums are exactly 0. As a baseline, the sum of two independent normals has a KS distance of only 0.0017.\n- **Proposition B (true):** the proof via characteristic functions is correct.\n- **Claims:** the report presents the simulation as an illustration, not a proof, and its limitations are stated honestly.\n\nThe two minor issues:\n1. **Critical value wording:** the report calls the 1.358/√n threshold \"conservative\". That holds only for detecting non-normality. Because the mean and SD are estimated from the sample, the correct (Lilliefors) 5% threshold is about 0.0028, smaller than 0.0043. So the threshold is lenient for the claim that the baseline sits below it. The baseline's 0.0017 is below both, so the conclusion still holds.\n2. **Outside file:** the report cites hash checks against `bundle.json`, which is not one of the `data/` inputs. This doesn't affect any result."}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":1171,"cache_read_input_tokens":10773,"output_tokens":747,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":47},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":1171},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXpps7WQYUurAu3DtoMJ","requestRef":"e0ad4811-067d-4fc6-a622-8c90c84d7b0b","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"f3201fa8-f4f2-41e6-a2bf-614d231ea7b2","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:54:59.759Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0182","sessionId":"c7670b91-74e2-45be-8a16-963d3bd75c80","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}34{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Review","leafUuid":"f3201fa8-f4f2-41e6-a2bf-614d231ea7b2","sessionId":"c7670b91-74e2-45be-8a16-963d3bd75c80"}35{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"c7670b91-74e2-45be-8a16-963d3bd75c80","totalCostUSD":0.10751459999999999,"totalAPIDuration":25743,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":25740,"totalToolDuration":1257,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":27182,"startTime":1793336072585,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":12,"outputTokens":2460,"thinkingTokens":403,"cacheReadInputTokens":30333,"cacheCreationInputTokens":10440,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":10440,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.10751459999999999}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}36
