It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md` by following this research protocol. The protocol adds no scientific information to the task; it organizes how you work and what evidence you leave behind.\n\nPHASES (execute in order; a phase is eligible only when its dependencies are satisfied):\n\nP0 Scope and contract (depends on: nothing)\n- Read `TASK.md` completely. In `out/state/contract.md`, restate in your own words: the scientific question; the quantity or quantities to be estimated (the estimands) and the assumptions under which they are meaningful; every required output file and key; the information-availability rules; what would make the task impossible or the result invalid.\n- Write the initial phase ledger `out/state/phases.json`: a JSON object mapping each phase id (P0 … P5) to {\"status\": \"pending\"|\"running\"|\"passed\"|\"failed\"|\"blocked\"|\"stale\"|\"skipped_optional\", \"checks\": [], \"notes\": \"\"}. Keep it current as you work. A phase may only be set to \"passed\" when the checks listed for it in this protocol have actually been executed and their outcome recorded in \"checks\".\n\nP1 Data audit and provenance (depends on: P0)\n- Inspect every input file: compute and record its SHA-256, row and column counts, schema, units, date ranges, missing values, duplicates and anomalies in `out/state/data_audit.md`.\n- Keep an exclusion ledger in `out/exclusions.csv` (columns: step, rule, n_before, n_after, n_removed, rationale) for every filtering step you apply, so that n_raw − total removed = n_analysed.\n- Identify any input that violates the information-availability rules and decide, in writing, how you will handle it.\n\nP2 Baseline (depends on: P1)\n- Before any elaborate method, compute the simplest valid baseline that answers the question (for example a naïve or unconditional estimate), with the same evaluation rule used later. Record it in `out/results.json` under the keys the task requires, or under `baseline_*` keys when the task does not name them.\n\nP3 Method and computation (depends on: P2)\n- Implement the analysis in `out/analysis.py` so that it reads only `data/`, writes `out/results.json` deterministically (fix every random seed you use and record it), and prints nothing that contradicts the written results. Any figure or table must be generated by this script.\n\nP4 Verification (depends on: P3)\n- Re-run `out/analysis.py` from a clean state and confirm it regenerates `out/results.json` with identical values. Record the check in `out/state/phases.json` under P4.\n- Check internal consistency: identities that must hold (for example counts that must add up, standard errors that must be positive, confidence intervals that must contain their estimates, date orderings that must respect the information rules), units, and magnitudes against the baseline. Record every check and its outcome in `out/state/checks.md`. A failed check must be fixed or honestly reported, never silently ignored.\n\nP5 Reporting (depends on: P4)\n- Write `out/report.md` with the sections: Question; Data and exclusions; Method; Results; Uncertainty; Limitations and open issues. Every quantitative statement must cite the key of `out/results.json` it comes from.\n- Write `out/claims.json`: a list of the central claims of your report, each as {\"id\": \"C1\", \"text\": \"...\", \"results_keys\": [\"...\"], \"status\": \"supported\"|\"unsupported\"|\"not_evaluated\", \"caveat\": \"...\"}. Do not state a claim in the report that is not in this ledger.\n- Set the final statuses in `out/state/phases.json`.\n\nSTOPPING RULES\n- Stop and declare the task complete only when every phase P0–P5 is \"passed\" with recorded checks. If a phase is \"blocked\" (missing information, impossible requirement, violated availability rule), stop, set the status, explain in `out/report.md` (section Limitations and open issues) and still write every required file with `null` for values you could not legitimately produce.\n- Do not spend effort on extensions that the task does not require.\n\nRECOVERY RULES\n- Append a short dated entry to `out/state/log.md` after each phase transition and after any important decision, so that work can be resumed by reading `out/state/`.\n- If you discover that an upstream input or decision changed after a downstream phase passed, mark the downstream phases \"stale\" and redo them; do not reuse stale results.\n- If you are interrupted and later resumed, first read `out/state/` and continue from the last consistent state; never re-run expensive steps that already have recorded, unchanged outputs.\n\nEXECUTABLE GATES (additional, mandatory)\n- A read-only gate program is provided at `~/wp29/gates/pgar_gate.py`. Run it from the workspace root as `~/wp29/venv/bin/python ~/wp29/gates/pgar_gate.py .` It checks the output contract of `TASK.md` (required files, keys, types, finite values, report sections, the claims ledger, the phase ledger, the exclusion ledger) and reproducibility (it re-runs `out/analysis.py` in a temporary copy and compares the regenerated `out/results.json` with yours). It never checks scientific correctness and it contains no reference answers.\n- You must run the gate at the end of P4 and again at the end of P5, and record each run's receipt (the gate writes `out/state/gate_receipts/<timestamp>.json`) in `out/state/phases.json`. You may not declare the task complete while the latest gate receipt reports `\"passed\": false`. Fix the reported problems and re-run the gate.\n- The controller will run the same gate after your session ends. If it fails, you will be resumed with the gate output and asked to fix the problems; each such cycle consumes your remaining budget.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. The estimands are the out-of-sample RMSE and MAE of the three forecasts (naive, expanding mean, ridge) at horizon h = 1 month, and the relative improvements of the ridge forecast over each baseline, 1 − RMSE_ridge / RMSE_baseline.\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/ip_predictors.csv` — observed data derived from six FRED series (INDPRO, MCOILWTICO, FEDFUNDS, PERMIT, NEWORDER, TCU; retrieved 2026-10-30 UTC; current vintage; see `data/README.md` for URLs, retrieval times, transformations, SHA-256 and licence). Columns: `month` (YYYY-MM-01), `ip_growth` (target: 100 × Δln of the industrial production index, percent per month), `oil_chg` (100 × Δln WTI monthly price), `fedfunds` (effective federal funds rate, percent, level), `permit_chg` (100 × Δln building permits), `neworder_chg` (100 × Δln core capital goods orders), `tcu` (capacity utilisation, percent of capacity, level). 417 monthly rows, 1992-01 to 2026-09; the first one or two rows of the change columns are empty.\n\n## Information-availability rules\n- Forecast origins: the 60 months t = 2021-09-01, …, 2026-08-01 (the `month` value). change, core capex orders change, capacity utilisation) beat naive (last value) and expanding-mean forecasts of next-month US IP growth over 60 origins 2021-09..2026-08?\n**Estimands:** out-of-sample RMSE and MAE (percent per month) of naive, mean, ridge at h=1 over the 60 origins; relative improvements 1 − RMSE_ridge/RMSE_baseline. Meaningful as pseudo-out-of-sample accuracy on current-vintage data under stylised timing (no publication lags), small sample (60 errors).\n**Outputs:** out/forecasts.csv (180 rows: origin_date,target_date,horizon,forecast,actual,model); out/results.json (task_id, n_origins, first_origin, last_origin, lambda, normalisation_window, n_features, rmse/mae ×3, rel_improvement_vs_naive/mean, feasibility, feasibility_reason, data_issues, n_input_rows, n_analysed, random_seed); out/report.md (6 sections); out/analysis.py; out/claims.json; plus protocol files (state/, exclusions.csv).\n**Information rules:** at origin t only data dated ≤ t; training rows s∈[1992-03, t−1] with target y_{s+1}; standardisation μ,σ (ddof=1) and ȳ from the training window of each origin, recomputed per origin; expanding mean over 1992-04..t.\n**Invalidating conditions:** any use of data dated > t (incl. full-sample scaling), missing values in required features/targets, wrong number of origins, missing target month for the last origin (2026-09 exists, so feasible).\nEOF\ncat > out/state/data_audit.md <<'EOF'\n# Data audit\n- File: data/ip_predictors.csv, SHA-256 7e388665caf3e4e7305ae6ed8f5625ab12a6c8df5c5696c1b5dd5b86da62a39b (matches README and bundle.json).\n- 417 data rows + header, 7 columns: month (date, YYYY-MM-01), ip_growth, oil_chg, permit_chg, neworder_chg (percent per month, 100×Δln), fedfunds (percent), tcu (percent of capacity). All numeric float.\n- Range 1992-01-01..2026-09-01, contiguous monthly, no duplicate months, no gaps.\n- Missing: neworder_chg 1992-01 and 1992-02 only (2 cells). No other NaN.\n- Discrepancy: README states 1992-01 is empty for every change series, but ip_growth, oil_chg, permit_chg have values in 1992-01. Used as given (only ip_growth 1992-01 enters, as lag 2 of the first training row, as the spec implies).\n- Anomalies: COVID-19 extremes 2020-03..2020-06 (ip_growth −3.99, −14.14, +1.64, +6.35; oil_chg −54.8, −56.8, +54.6). Kept (spec defines windows without exclusion).\n- Availability: the file is current vintage; per TASK.md publication lags are ignored and revisions are a stated limitation, not a violation. No input violates the rules provided only data dated ≤ t is used at each origin (enforced in code and tested by perturbing future data).\n- Exclusions (out/exclusions.csv): 417 → 415 (before 1992-03) → 413 (s+1 > last origin) = n_analysed at last origin.\nEOF\ncat > out/state/checks.md <<'EOF'\n# Verification checks (P4)\n1. I evaluated this over 60 rolling origins (`n_origins`), from `first_origin` = 2021-09-01 to `last_origin` = 2026-08-01, at horizon h = 1. The estimands are each model's out-of-sample RMSE and MAE, and the ridge model's relative RMSE improvement over each baseline.\n\n## Data and exclusions\nThe input is `data/ip_predictors.csv`: 417 rows (`n_input_rows`), monthly from 1992-01 to 2026-09. It is current-vintage FRED data, and its SHA-256 matches the README. There are no duplicate or missing months. The only empty cells are `neworder_chg` for 1992-01 and 1992-02. All data problems and how I handled them are listed in `data_issues`:\n- The README says the 1992-01 cells of every change series are empty. In the file, three of them (`ip_growth`, `oil_chg`, `permit_chg`) have values. I used the values as given.\n- The extreme COVID-19 months (2020-03 to 2020-06) are kept in every training window.\n- The data are revised (current vintage), and publication lags are ignored.\n\nExclusion ledger (`out/exclusions.csv`), counted at the last origin: start with 417 rows. Dropping months before 1992-03-01 (the training start set in the specification) leaves 415. Dropping months whose target would fall after the origin leaves 413 training rows (`n_analysed`).\n\n## Method\n- **Naive forecast:** `ip_growth` at the origin t.\n- **Mean forecast:** the arithmetic mean of `ip_growth` from 1992-04 to t.\n- **Ridge model:** trained on rows s from 1992-03 to t−1, with target `ip_growth` at s+1.\n - Features (`n_features` = 8): `ip_growth` at s, s−1 and s−2, plus `oil_chg`, `fedfunds`, `permit_chg`, `neworder_chg` and `tcu`.\n - Each feature is standardised with the mean and the sample standard deviation (ddof = 1) of that origin's training rows. These statistics are recomputed at every origin (`normalisation_window` = \"expanding\").\n - The target is centred on its training mean ȳ, and b = (Z′Z + 50 I)⁻¹ Z′(y − ȳ). The intercept is not penalised.\n - Forecast = ȳ + z̃_t·b, where z̃_t is the origin's feature vector standardised with the same statistics.\n- **Evaluation:** errors are forecast − actual over the 60 target months, 2021-10 to 2026-09.\n- No randomness is involved (`random_seed` = null).\n\n## Results\n| model | RMSE (pp/month) | MAE (pp/month) |\n|---|---|---|\n| naive | 0.883 (`rmse_naive`) | 0.699 (`mae_naive`) |\n| expanding mean | 0.544 (`rmse_mean`) | 0.429 (`mae_mean`) |\n| ridge λ=50 | 0.561 (`rmse_ridge`) | 0.451 (`mae_ridge`) |\n\n- **Ridge vs naive:** ridge reduces RMSE by 36.5% (`rel_improvement_vs_naive` = 0.365).\n- **Ridge vs expanding mean:** ridge does *not* beat the mean. Its RMSE is 3.1% higher (`rel_improvement_vs_mean` = −0.031), and its MAE is also higher (`mae_ridge` vs `mae_mean`).\n\nThe individual forecasts are in `out/forecasts.csv`: 180 rows, 60 per model.\n\n## Uncertainty\nI ran Diebold–Mariano tests on squared-error loss for h = 1, with the Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold correction and a t(59) reference distribution:\n- **Ridge vs naive:** DM = 3.36, p = 0.0014 (`dm_stat_vs_naive`, `dm_pvalue_vs_naive`). The ridge model's advantage over the naive forecast is statistically significant.\n- **Ridge vs mean:** DM = −0.54, p = 0.59 (`dm_stat_vs_mean`, `dm_pvalue_vs_mean`). The two forecasts' accuracy cannot be told apart statistically.\n\nWith only 60 forecast errors, the RMSE estimates are imprecise. I did not compute confidence intervals for the RMSEs themselves.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- **Not real-time:** the data are current-vintage (revised) INDPRO, TCU and NEWORDER, and publication lags are ignored. These are pseudo-out-of-sample results, not real-time forecast performance.\n- **Fixed specification:** λ is fixed at 50 and not tuned, and the model is linear. Every training window includes the COVID-19 extremes, which may distort the coefficients. The specification defines the windows without exclusions, so I kept them.\n- **Narrow evaluation:** the window is short (60 months) and covers a single period, 2021–2026.\n- **README discrepancy:** the README's statement about empty 1992-01 cells does not match the file (see `data_issues`).\n- **Feasibility:** the task was completed in full (`feasibility` = \"complete\").\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"Over 60 origins (2021-09 to 2026-08), the ridge forecast has a 36.5% lower RMSE than the naive forecast.\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_ridge\",\"rmse_naive\",\"rel_improvement_vs_naive\",\"n_origins\",\"first_origin\",\"last_origin\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Current-vintage data; `lambda`) on eight standardised predictors forecast next-month US industrial production growth (100 × Δln INDPRO) better than the naive (last value) forecast and the expanding historical mean? The specification defines the windows without exclusions, so I kept them.\n- **Narrow evaluation:** the window is short (60 months) and covers a single period, 2021–2026.\n- **README discrepancy:** the README's statement about empty 1992-01 cells does not match the file (see `data_issues`).\n- **Feasibility:** the task was completed in full (`feasibility` = \"complete\").\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"Over 60 origins (2021-09 to 2026-08), the ridge forecast has a 36.5% lower RMSE than the naive forecast.\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_ridge\",\"rmse_naive\",\"rel_improvement_vs_naive\",\"n_origins\",\"first_origin\",\"last_origin\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Current-vintage data; Over the 60 origins (2021-09 to 2026-08, one month ahead), its forecast error is about 36% lower than naive's and about 3% higher than the mean's. All phases P0–P5 are marked passed, and the final gate run passed all 38 checks, including re-running `out/analysis.py` and getting the same results.\n\n| Forecast | RMSE (percent per month) | MAE (percent per month) |\n|---|---|---|\n| Naive (last value) | 0.883 | 0.699 |\n| Expanding mean | 0.544 | 0.429 |\n| Ridge, λ = 50 | 0.561 | 0.451 |\n\n- **Ridge vs naive:** RMSE is 36.5% lower (`rel_improvement_vs_naive` = 0.365). The difference is statistically significant (Diebold–Mariano test, p = 0.0014).\n- **Ridge vs expanding mean:** RMSE is 3.1% higher (`rel_improvement_vs_mean` = −0.031), and MAE is higher too. The difference is not statistically significant (p = 0.59).\n\nThe ridge model follows the task's specification exactly: the scaling statistics and target mean come only from each origin's own training window (413 training rows at the last origin). Two checks back this up. A separately written version of the model gives the same forecasts to within 4e-11. Changing all data dated after an origin leaves that origin's forecast unchanged.\n\n**Limitations:**\n- The data are today's revised figures, and publication delays are ignored, so this is not how the forecasts would have performed in real time.\n- Only 60 forecast errors are evaluated, so the error estimates are imprecise; I did not compute confidence intervals for them.\n- The extreme COVID-19 months (2020-03 to 2020-06) stay in every training window, as the specification requires.\n- `data/README.md` says the January 1992 values of the change series are empty, but the file has values for three of them. I used them as given and listed this under `data_issues`.\n- The two Diebold–Mariano test results are extra keys in `results.json` that the task did not ask for.\n\nEverything is in `out/`. Start with `report.md`; `analysis.py` regenerates `results.json` and `forecasts.csv` from `data/`."}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":311,"cache_read_input_tokens":23557,"output_tokens":797,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":30},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":311},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXmY2GMESrBaWmWsRae6","requestRef":"d3866737-9045-426c-84a4-3de9d80f24c1","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"952580d5-eb1f-4343-8823-90752c8c1ad7","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:11:50.947Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0031","sessionId":"1041d5f9-2281-4bc1-9cb6-4ef91f9c5fb4","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}72{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin","leafUuid":"952580d5-eb1f-4343-8823-90752c8c1ad7","sessionId":"1041d5f9-2281-4bc1-9cb6-4ef91f9c5fb4"}73{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"1041d5f9-2281-4bc1-9cb6-4ef91f9c5fb4","totalCostUSD":0.3973821999999999,"totalAPIDuration":113729,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":113721,"totalToolDuration":4683,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":118587,"startTime":1793333392367,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":24,"outputTokens":12819,"thinkingTokens":822,"cacheReadInputTokens":145431,"cacheCreationInputTokens":22364,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":22364,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.3973821999999999}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}74
