It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md`.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. Expected: 8 × 2 × 2 = 32 rows.\n- `out/results.json` with the keys:\n\n| key | type | unit | meaning |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| `task_id` | string | — | \"F3-conf-02\" |\n| `model_name` | string | — | short name of your model, used in the `model` column |\n| `model_description` | string | — | one-sentence specification (lags, estimation sample, method) |\n| `n_origins` | integer | — | 8 |\n| `first_origin`, `last_origin` | string | date | first and last vintage dates |\n| `rmse_naive_h1`, `mae_naive_h1`, `rmse_naive_h2`, `mae_naive_h2` | number | percentage points (annualised growth) | naive errors vs first releases |\n| `rmse_model_h1`, `mae_model_h1`, `rmse_model_h2`, `mae_model_h2` | number | percentage points | your model's errors vs first releases |\n| `rel_improvement_rmse_h1`, `rel_improvement_rmse_h2` | number | fraction | 1 − rmse_model / rmse_naive |\n| `mean_abs_revision_h1_targets` | number | percentage points | mean over the 8 h = 1 target quarters of \\|current-vintage value − first-release value\\| |\n| `feasibility` | string | — | \"complete\", \"partial\" or \"infeasible\" |\n| `feasibility_reason` | string or null | — | explanation if not complete |\n| `data_issues` | array of {\"issue\",\"handling\"} | — | data problems detected and how handled (empty list if none) |\n| `n_input_rows` | object | — | data rows read per input file (excluding headers), keyed by path relative to `data/` (e.g. \"current_vintage.csv\", \"first_release.csv\", \"vintages/A191RL1Q225SBEA_vintage_2024-01-31.csv\") |\n| `n_analysed` | integer | — | observations in the last origin's training data |\n| `random_seed` | integer or null | — | seed used, if any |\n\n- `out/report.md` with the sections: Question; Data and exclusions; Method; Results; Uncertainty; Limitations and open issues.\n- `out/analysis.py` — running `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root must regenerate `out/results.json` and `out/forecasts.csv` from `data/` only, deterministically.\n- `out/claims.json` — a list of the central claims of the report: [{\"id\": \"C1\", \"text\": \"...\", \"results_keys\": [\"...\"], \"status\": \"supported\"|\"unsupported\"|\"not_evaluated\", \"caveat\": \"...\"}].\n\n## Constraints\n- No network access. Python: `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels available). > out/report.md <<'EOF'\n# F3-conf-02 — Real-time forecasts of US real GDP growth (A191RL1Q225SBEA)\n\n## Question\nUsing only the data published at each of 8 forecast origins (ALFRED vintages from 2024-01-31 to 2025-12-31), how accurately could quarterly US real GDP growth (q/q % change at a seasonally adjusted annual rate) have been forecast 1 and 2 quarters past the last published quarter? And does a simple AR model beat the naive \"last value\" forecast? Forecasts are scored against the **first-release** (advance) value of each target quarter.\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- `data/vintages/*.csv` (8 files, 307–314 rows each, 1947Q2 up to the latest published quarter). At each origin only that vintage file is used. Every vintage parsed cleanly: no missing or non-numeric values, no duplicate dates, no gaps in the quarters.\n- `data/first_release.csv` (13 rows) gives the actuals. For every origin, the last value in the vintage file equals the first release of that quarter, which confirms the vintages are aligned with the advance releases.\n- `data/current_vintage.csv` (318 rows) is used **only** for the revision statistic.\n- Exclusions in model estimation: quarters before 1985Q1 are left out (only post-Great-Moderation data are used), and so are regression pairs where y_t or y_{t-1} falls in 2020Q1–2021Q1 (the pandemic outliers: −28% and +35% annualised). I fixed this rule before looking at any forecast results. The naive forecast uses only the last value of each vintage.\n- Shutdown timing: the BEA advance estimate for 2025Q3 was delayed by the Oct–Nov 2025 federal shutdown. As a result the 8th origin is 2025-12-31 (5 months after the 7th, not 3), and the first release of its h=1 target (2025Q4) is dated 2026-02-28. I used the origins as supplied. Horizons are counted from the last quarter in each vintage, as TASK.md specifies.\n\n## Method\n- **Naive:** for both h=1 and h=2, the forecast is the last value in the origin's vintage.\n- **Model `ar1_1985_excovid`:** y_t = c + φ y_{t−1} + e_t, fitted by OLS separately on each origin's vintage. The sample runs from 1985Q1 to the last published quarter, minus the pandemic pairs above. That gives 150–157 regression observations; this count is `n_train` for the model rows in `forecasts.csv`. For naive rows, `n_train` is the full length of the vintage. The h=2 forecast iterates the model: ŷ_{T+2} = c + φ ŷ_{T+1}. Estimates hardly changed across origins (c ≈ 1.79–1.84, φ ≈ 0.32–0.33), so the model is close to \"shrink about two-thirds of the way toward a mean of roughly 2.7%\".\n- **Metrics:** RMSE and MAE over the 8 origins for each horizon, plus 1 − RMSE_model/RMSE_naive. The revision statistic is the mean |current − first release| over the 8 h=1 target quarters (2024Q1 … 2025Q4).\n- Everything is deterministic (no randomness). `out/analysis.py` regenerates `results.json`, `forecasts.csv` and `uncertainty.json`.\n\n## Results\nErrors are in percentage points of annualised growth, scored against first releases. n = 8 per horizon.\n\n| | RMSE h=1 | MAE h=1 | RMSE h=2 | MAE h=2 |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| Naive | 2.010 | 1.688 | 2.265 | 1.813 |\n| AR(1) | 1.481 | 1.223 | 1.399 | 1.021 |\n\n- The AR(1) model's RMSE is lower than naive by 26.3% at h=1 and by 38.2% at h=2.\n- The AR(1) model beat the naive forecast (lower squared error) at 5 of 8 origins for h=1 and at all 8 origins for h=2.\n- Mean absolute revision between first release and the 2026-10-30 vintage, over the h=1 targets: **0.56 pp**. Individual revisions range from 0.1 to 1.2 pp; the largest is 2025Q4 (first release 1.4, current 0.2). That is about 28% of the naive h=1 RMSE and about 38% of the AR h=1 RMSE. Measured against later-revised data, the errors would therefore look noticeably different.\n\n## Uncertainty\nWith only 8 origins, these estimates are very imprecise. Results are in `out/uncertainty.json`.\n- I ran a Diebold–Mariano test on squared-error differentials, with the Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold small-sample correction and t(7) reference. It gives a statistic of 1.47 (p = 0.19) at h=1 and 1.71 (p = 0.13) at h=2. Neither horizon shows a statistically significant gain at conventional levels. Even this asymptotic-style test is unreliable at T = 8.\n- The gains are concentrated in a few origins. Most of the advantage comes from 2025-04-30, where the naive forecast carried forward the import-driven −0.3% for 2025Q1, and 2025-12-31, where it carried forward 4.3% for 2025Q3. Dropping either origin would substantially reduce the measured improvement.\n- The h=2 sign result (model better at 8 of 8 origins) is the most robust single finding. Under a null of equal accuracy, a sign test gives p = 2 × 0.5^8 ≈ 0.008. However, overlapping h=2 targets make the origins serially dependent, so this p-value is optimistic.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- The evaluation sample is tiny (8 origins in 2024–2025) and RMSE is dominated by 1–2 large surprises, so the results do not generalise reliably.\n- Only one model was tried, and its exclusion rules (start in 1985, drop pandemic pairs) are judgement calls. They were fixed in advance, but no alternative specifications were tested, so there was no specification search. A full-sample AR would be heavily affected by the 2020 outliers.\n- Actuals are first releases (advance estimates). Accuracy against the current vintage would differ, because the mean absolute revision is 0.56 pp.\n- The irregular 5-month gap before the last origin (the shutdown) means \"h=1\" at that origin is effectively a backcast of a quarter that had already ended. That holds for every origin in this design, since h=1 targets the quarter in progress or just finished.\n- The model uses only the GDP series itself: no monthly indicators and no nowcasting information. Professional real-time forecasts would normally do better.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"Real-time AR(1) (1985+, pandemic pairs excluded) achieved RMSE 1.48 pp at h=1 vs 2.01 pp for naive, a 26% reduction, against first releases over 8 origins.\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rmse_naive_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Not statistically significant (HLN-DM p=0.19, T=8); Most of the advantage comes from 2025-04-30, where the naive forecast carried forward the import-driven −0.3% for 2025Q1, and 2025-12-31, where it carried forward 4.3% for 2025Q3. A simple time-series model did better than the naive forecast at both horizons, but with only 8 origins the gain is not statistically significant.\n\n**Model:** an AR(1) with an intercept, fitted by ordinary least squares (`ar1_1985_excovid`). It is re-fitted at each origin using only that origin's vintage file, on data from 1985Q1 to the last published quarter. I dropped the 2020Q1–2021Q1 pandemic outliers (−28% and +35% annualised), a rule I fixed before looking at any results. The two-quarter forecast is built by feeding the one-quarter forecast back into the model. The fitted coefficients barely changed across origins, so the model mostly pulls the last value toward a long-run mean of about 2.7%.\n\n**Results**, in percentage points of annualised growth, scored against first releases (8 forecasts per horizon):\n\n| | RMSE h=1 | MAE h=1 | RMSE h=2 | MAE h=2 |\n|---|---|---|---|---|\n| Naive | 2.01 | 1.69 | 2.27 | 1.81 |\n| AR(1) | 1.48 | 1.22 | 1.40 | 1.02 |\n\n- **Improvement in RMSE over naive:** 26.3% one quarter ahead and 38.2% two quarters ahead.\n- **Where the model won:** it beat naive at 5 of 8 origins one quarter ahead and at all 8 two quarters ahead.\n- **Revisions:** the first releases of the one-quarter-ahead target quarters were later revised by 0.56 points on average, ranging from 0.1 to 1.2. Scored against today's revised data, the errors would look noticeably different.\n- **Significance:** a Diebold–Mariano test with a small-sample correction gives p = 0.19 one quarter ahead and p = 0.13 two quarters ahead. Neither is significant at conventional levels.\n\n**Limitations:**\n- **Few, concentrated gains:** most of the advantage comes from two origins. In April 2025 the naive forecast carried forward Q1's −0.3%, and in December 2025 it carried forward Q3's 4.3%. Dropping either would shrink the measured improvement substantially.\n- **One model only:** I tested no alternative specifications, so the 1985 start and the pandemic exclusion are judgement calls that were never checked against alternatives.\n- **Shutdown timing:** the federal shutdown delayed the 2025Q3 GDP release, so the last origin is 2025-12-31, five months after the previous one. At that origin the one-quarter-ahead target (2025Q4) had already ended. I used the origins as supplied and recorded this as a data issue.\n\n`out/analysis.py` regenerates the results and forecasts deterministically, and the data files passed integrity checks with no missing values or gaps. I also wrote an extra file, `out/uncertainty.json`, with the significance and per-origin loss calculations used in the report's Uncertainty section.\n\nFiles are in `./out/`:\n- `results.json`\n- `forecasts.csv` (32 rows)\n- `report.md`\n- `claims.json`\n- `analysis.py`\n- `uncertainty.json`"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":455,"cache_read_input_tokens":20091,"output_tokens":1092,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":0},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":455},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":0,"requestId":"req_011CgXnEzAVDXWnPf3RShx8r","requestRef":"41db9523-c88b-4523-951d-800285b642f8","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"09853096-0a41-4712-b219-be567763414e","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:21:08.795Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0069","sessionId":"271037db-358c-4d1e-9a6c-ff9b62d1d700","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}48{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin","leafUuid":"09853096-0a41-4712-b219-be567763414e","sessionId":"271037db-358c-4d1e-9a6c-ff9b62d1d700"}49{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"271037db-358c-4d1e-9a6c-ff9b62d1d700","totalCostUSD":0.295938,"totalAPIDuration":87206,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":87202,"totalToolDuration":1383,"totalLinesAdded":1,"totalLinesRemoved":1,"totalDuration":88777,"startTime":1793333980025,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":16,"outputTokens":9340,"thinkingTokens":1034,"cacheReadInputTokens":69320,"cacheCreationInputTokens":19042,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":19042,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.295938}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}50
