It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md` by following this research protocol. The protocol adds no scientific information to the task; it organizes how you work and what evidence you leave behind.\n\nPHASES (execute in order; a phase is eligible only when its dependencies are satisfied):\n\nP0 Scope and contract (depends on: nothing)\n- Read `TASK.md` completely. In `out/state/contract.md`, restate in your own words: the scientific question; the quantity or quantities to be estimated (the estimands) and the assumptions under which they are meaningful; every required output file and key; the information-availability rules; what would make the task impossible or the result invalid.\n- Write the initial phase ledger `out/state/phases.json`: a JSON object mapping each phase id (P0 … P5) to {\"status\": \"pending\"|\"running\"|\"passed\"|\"failed\"|\"blocked\"|\"stale\"|\"skipped_optional\", \"checks\": [], \"notes\": \"\"}. Keep it current as you work. A phase may only be set to \"passed\" when the checks listed for it in this protocol have actually been executed and their outcome recorded in \"checks\".\n\nP1 Data audit and provenance (depends on: P0)\n- Inspect every input file: compute and record its SHA-256, row and column counts, schema, units, date ranges, missing values, duplicates and anomalies in `out/state/data_audit.md`.\n- Keep an exclusion ledger in `out/exclusions.csv` (columns: step, rule, n_before, n_after, n_removed, rationale) for every filtering step you apply, so that n_raw − total removed = n_analysed.\n- Identify any input that violates the information-availability rules and decide, in writing, how you will handle it.\n\nP2 Baseline (depends on: P1)\n- Before any elaborate method, compute the simplest valid baseline that answers the question (for example a naïve or unconditional estimate), with the same evaluation rule used later. Record it in `out/results.json` under the keys the task requires, or under `baseline_*` keys when the task does not name them.\n\nP3 Method and computation (depends on: P2)\n- Implement the analysis in `out/analysis.py` so that it reads only `data/`, writes `out/results.json` deterministically (fix every random seed you use and record it), and prints nothing that contradicts the written results. Any figure or table must be generated by this script.\n\nP4 Verification (depends on: P3)\n- Re-run `out/analysis.py` from a clean state and confirm it regenerates `out/results.json` with identical values. Record the check in `out/state/phases.json` under P4.\n- Check internal consistency: identities that must hold (for example counts that must add up, standard errors that must be positive, confidence intervals that must contain their estimates, date orderings that must respect the information rules), units, and magnitudes against the baseline. Record every check and its outcome in `out/state/checks.md`. A failed check must be fixed or honestly reported, never silently ignored.\n\nP5 Reporting (depends on: P4)\n- Write `out/report.md` with the sections: Question; Data and exclusions; Method; Results; Uncertainty; Limitations and open issues. Every quantitative statement must cite the key of `out/results.json` it comes from.\n- Write `out/claims.json`: a list of the central claims of your report, each as {\"id\": \"C1\", \"text\": \"...\", \"results_keys\": [\"...\"], \"status\": \"supported\"|\"unsupported\"|\"not_evaluated\", \"caveat\": \"...\"}. Do not state a claim in the report that is not in this ledger.\n- Set the final statuses in `out/state/phases.json`.\n\nSTOPPING RULES\n- Stop and declare the task complete only when every phase P0–P5 is \"passed\" with recorded checks. If a phase is \"blocked\" (missing information, impossible requirement, violated availability rule), stop, set the status, explain in `out/report.md` (section Limitations and open issues) and still write every required file with `null` for values you could not legitimately produce.\n- Do not spend effort on extensions that the task does not require.\n\nRECOVERY RULES\n- Append a short dated entry to `out/state/log.md` after each phase transition and after any important decision, so that work can be resumed by reading `out/state/`.\n- If you discover that an upstream input or decision changed after a downstream phase passed, mark the downstream phases \"stale\" and redo them; do not reuse stale results.\n- If you are interrupted and later resumed, first read `out/state/` and continue from the last consistent state; never re-run expensive steps that already have recorded, unchanged outputs.\n\nEXECUTABLE GATES (additional, mandatory)\n- A read-only gate program is provided at `~/wp29/gates/pgar_gate.py`. Run it from the workspace root as `~/wp29/venv/bin/python ~/wp29/gates/pgar_gate.py .` It checks the output contract of `TASK.md` (required files, keys, types, finite values, report sections, the claims ledger, the phase ledger, the exclusion ledger) and reproducibility (it re-runs `out/analysis.py` in a temporary copy and compares the regenerated `out/results.json` with yours). It never checks scientific correctness and it contains no reference answers.\n- You must run the gate at the end of P4 and again at the end of P5, and record each run's receipt (the gate writes `out/state/gate_receipts/<timestamp>.json`) in `out/state/phases.json`. You may not declare the task complete while the latest gate receipt reports `\"passed\": false`. Fix the reported problems and re-run the gate.\n- The controller will run the same gate after your session ends. If it fails, you will be resumed with the gate output and asked to fix the problems; each such cycle consumes your remaining budget.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. The estimands are the out-of-sample RMSE and MAE of the seasonal-naive forecast and of your model at each horizon, the relative improvement 1 − RMSE_model / RMSE_snaive per horizon, and, at h = 4, the mean loss differential d̄ = mean_t (e²_snaive,t − e²_model,t) with a standard error valid under serial correlation of the loss differential (Diebold–Mariano-type test).\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/cpi_quarterly.csv` — observed data derived from the Bank of Canada Valet series V41690973 (Total CPI, Canada, index 2002 = 100, not seasonally adjusted, monthly; Statistics Canada table 18-10-0004-01); retrieved 2026-10-30 UTC; see `data/README.md` for URL, SHA-256 and terms. seasonal-naive forecast of Canadian quarterly CPI inflation (400·Δln of quarterly-average NSA CPI) at h = 1, 2, 4; and at h = 4 is the mean squared-error loss differential distinguishable from zero using a HAC (long-run-variance) SE with lag ≥ 3?\n\n**Estimands.** RMSE and MAE per horizon for snaive and model; 1 − RMSE_model/RMSE_snaive per horizon; at h=4 d̄ = mean(e²_snaive − e²_model), HAC `first_origin`, `last_origin`), does a time-series model beat the seasonal-naive forecast of annualised, not seasonally adjusted, quarterly CPI inflation at h = 1, 2 and 4? And at h = 4, is the mean squared-error loss differential distinguishable from zero once we use a standard error that allows for the serial correlation caused by overlapping forecasts?\n\n## Data and exclusions\nInput: `data/cpi_quarterly.csv`, 127 rows (`n_input_rows`). `data/cpi_monthly.csv` (381 rows) was used only to cross-check the file. Both SHA-256 hashes match `data/README.md`. The quarterly file agrees with the monthly file: quarterly averages match to within 3.3e-7, and recomputing inflation reproduces `infl_annualised` to within 3.3e-6. There are no duplicates and no gaps (details in `out/state/data_audit.md`). The one data issue (`data_issues`) is that inflation is undefined for 1995Q1. Exclusions are listed in `out/exclusions.csv`: 127 → 126 (drop 1995Q1) → 122 (quarters after the last origin are not used for estimation) → 118 (first 4 quarters used to build lags). So the last estimation sample has 118 observations (`n_analysed`). Quarters after an origin are used only as realised targets for that origin.\n\n## Method\n- **Baseline (`snaive`):** the forecast for quarter t+h is the inflation value of quarter t+h−4.\n- **Model (`sar_aic`, `model_description`):** OLS regression of inflation on four quarterly seasonal intercepts plus p own lags. At every origin, p ∈ {0,…,4} is chosen by AIC on a common sample. The estimation window expands from 1995Q2 to the origin and uses only quarters ≤ origin. Multi-step forecasts are made by iterating the model forward. Across origins AIC chose p = 1 fifteen times and p = 2 twenty-five times (`supp_selected_p_counts`).\n- **Evaluation:** errors are actual − forecast. RMSE and MAE are computed over the 40 origins for each horizon.\n- **Diebold–Mariano-type test at h = 4:** d_t = e²_snaive − e²_model. Its long-run variance uses a Newey–West (Bartlett) estimator with truncation lag 3 = h − 1 (`hac_lags_h4`, `hac_kernel_h4`). The test uses a two-sided normal p-value.\n- The script is deterministic and draws no random numbers (`random_seed` = null).\n\n## Results\n| h | RMSE snaive | RMSE model | MAE snaive | MAE model | 1 − RMSE ratio |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 | 2.849 (`rmse_snaive_h1`) | 2.192 (`rmse_model_h1`) | 2.137 (`mae_snaive_h1`) | 1.519 (`mae_model_h1`) | 0.231 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h1`) |\n| 2 | 2.847 (`rmse_snaive_h2`) | 2.460 (`rmse_model_h2`) | 2.126 (`mae_snaive_h2`) | 1.550 (`mae_model_h2`) | 0.136 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h2`) |\n| 4 | 2.882 (`rmse_snaive_h4`) | 2.340 (`rmse_model_h4`) | 2.181 (`mae_snaive_h4`) | 1.594 (`mae_model_h4`) | 0.188 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h4`) |\n\nThe seasonal AR has lower RMSE and lower MAE than seasonal-naive at all three horizons in this sample. At h = 4, the mean loss differential is 2.83 squared pp (`loss_diff_mean_h4`), with a HAC SE of 2.08 (`loss_diff_se_h4`). This gives DM = 1.36 (`dm_stat_h4`) and a two-sided p = 0.174 (`dm_pvalue_h4`).\n\n## Uncertainty\nAt the pre-specified lag of 3 with a Bartlett kernel, the h = 4 improvement is **not** statistically distinguishable from zero at conventional levels (`dm_pvalue_h4`). The Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold small-sample-corrected p-value is 0.22 (`supp_hln_pvalue_h4`). The SE depends heavily on the HAC choice (`supp_dm_se_sensitivity_h4`): it is 1.85 at Bartlett lag 4, 1.37 at Bartlett lag 6, and 1.70 with a rectangular kernel at lag 3. All of these are smaller than the lag-3 Bartlett SE because the loss differential has negative autocorrelation at higher orders. Lag 3 was fixed before looking at results and is the value reported. The sensitivity means the conclusion is fragile, not robust, and choosing a lag after seeing the results would be specification searching. No significance tests were run at h = 1 or h = 2, so the improvements there are point estimates only.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- Only 40 origins, and the period includes the 2020 pandemic shock and the 2021–22 inflation surge. A few large errors can dominate squared-error loss.\n- With T = 40, the asymptotic normal approximation of the DM test is rough.\n- The errors use the current data vintage. CPI is essentially unrevised, but no claim of real-time validity is made. A quarter is treated as known at the end of that quarter, whereas publication actually comes about three weeks later.\n- Only one model was tried, so there is no multiple-model search to adjust for.\n- `supp_*` keys are supplementary and not required by the task.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The seasonal AR model has lower out-of-sample RMSE than seasonal-naive at h = 1, 2 and 4 (relative improvements 0.231, 0.136, 0.188).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_snaive_h1\",\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rmse_snaive_h2\",\"rmse_model_h2\",\"rmse_snaive_h4\",\"rmse_model_h4\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h2\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimates over 40 origins; And at h = 4, is the mean squared-error loss differential distinguishable from zero once we use a standard error that allows for the serial correlation caused by overlapping forecasts?\n\n## Data and exclusions\nInput: `data/cpi_quarterly.csv`, 127 rows (`n_input_rows`). A quarter is treated as known at the end of that quarter, whereas publication actually comes about three weeks later.\n- Only one model was tried, so there is no multiple-model search to adjust for.\n- `supp_*` keys are supplementary and not required by the task.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The seasonal AR model has lower out-of-sample RMSE than seasonal-naive at h = 1, 2 and 4 (relative improvements 0.231, 0.136, 0.188).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_snaive_h1\",\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rmse_snaive_h2\",\"rmse_model_h2\",\"rmse_snaive_h4\",\"rmse_model_h4\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h2\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimates over 40 origins; My model beats the seasonal-naive forecast at all three horizons in this sample, but at 4 quarters ahead the gain is not statistically significant. The final gate check passed, and re-running `out/analysis.py` reproduces `out/results.json` exactly.\n\n**Model (`sar_aic`):** a regression of inflation on its own recent values (1 to 4 lags, chosen at each origin by AIC) plus one intercept per calendar quarter. It is fitted only on quarters up to each origin, and longer forecasts are built by feeding each forecast back in. AIC chose 1 lag at 15 origins and 2 lags at 25.\n\n| Horizon | RMSE, seasonal-naive | RMSE, model | Relative improvement |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 quarter | 2.85 | 2.19 | 23.1% |\n| 2 quarters | 2.85 | 2.46 | 13.6% |\n| 4 quarters | 2.88 | 2.34 | 18.8% |\n\nThe model's MAE is also lower at every horizon.\n\n**4-quarter test:** the model's squared errors are smaller than the naive forecast's by 2.83 on average. The standard error allowing for overlapping errors is 2.08, using the usual Newey–West weighting and a lag of 3 quarters, which I fixed before looking at results. That gives a test statistic of 1.36 and p = 0.174, so the difference is not distinguishable from zero. A version of the test adjusted for small samples gives p = 0.22.\n\n**The test result is fragile:** the standard error drops as the lag rises (1.85 at lag 4, 1.37 at lag 6), and is 1.70 with equal weights at lag 3. At lag 6 the result would look significant. I kept lag 3 as the headline because picking a lag after seeing the results would be specification searching.\n\n**Other limitations:**\n- With only 40 origins, the test's normal approximation is rough.\n- The period includes the 2020–22 shocks, so a few large errors can dominate.\n- Errors use today's version of the data, so I make no claim about how the model would have done in real time.\n- I ran no significance tests at 1 and 2 quarters, so those gains are point estimates only.\n\n**Data:** the input checked out against the monthly file; the only issue is that inflation is undefined for the first quarter (1995Q1). The last estimation sample has 118 observations.\n\nFiles are in `out/`:\n- `analysis.py`\n- `results.json`\n- `forecasts.csv` (240 rows)\n- `exclusions.csv`\n- `report.md`\n- `claims.json`\n- `state/` (contract, data audit, checks, phase ledger, log, gate receipts)"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":329,"cache_read_input_tokens":24027,"output_tokens":924,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":25},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":329},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXnQAfWy2brjWi4wktvP","requestRef":"6fd6e908-c419-48d3-98e9-7eeb2d93046d","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"7de5f38b-138b-49e2-b8d2-803968ed6019","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:23:13.107Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0074","sessionId":"8c25833d-5f8a-4136-a434-40d9ba73010e","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}65{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin","leafUuid":"7de5f38b-138b-49e2-b8d2-803968ed6019","sessionId":"8c25833d-5f8a-4136-a434-40d9ba73010e"}66{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"8c25833d-5f8a-4136-a434-40d9ba73010e","totalCostUSD":0.39366460000000003,"totalAPIDuration":117710,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":117706,"totalToolDuration":4400,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":122306,"startTime":1793334070809,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":22,"outputTokens":12741,"thinkingTokens":981,"cacheReadInputTokens":122483,"cacheCreationInputTokens":22852,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":22852,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.39366460000000003}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}67
