It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md` by following this research protocol. The protocol adds no scientific information to the task; it organizes how you work and what evidence you leave behind.\n\nPHASES (execute in order; a phase is eligible only when its dependencies are satisfied):\n\nP0 Scope and contract (depends on: nothing)\n- Read `TASK.md` completely. In `out/state/contract.md`, restate in your own words: the scientific question; the quantity or quantities to be estimated (the estimands) and the assumptions under which they are meaningful; every required output file and key; the information-availability rules; what would make the task impossible or the result invalid.\n- Write the initial phase ledger `out/state/phases.json`: a JSON object mapping each phase id (P0 … P5) to {\"status\": \"pending\"|\"running\"|\"passed\"|\"failed\"|\"blocked\"|\"stale\"|\"skipped_optional\", \"checks\": [], \"notes\": \"\"}. Keep it current as you work. A phase may only be set to \"passed\" when the checks listed for it in this protocol have actually been executed and their outcome recorded in \"checks\".\n\nP1 Data audit and provenance (depends on: P0)\n- Inspect every input file: compute and record its SHA-256, row and column counts, schema, units, date ranges, missing values, duplicates and anomalies in `out/state/data_audit.md`.\n- Keep an exclusion ledger in `out/exclusions.csv` (columns: step, rule, n_before, n_after, n_removed, rationale) for every filtering step you apply, so that n_raw − total removed = n_analysed.\n- Identify any input that violates the information-availability rules and decide, in writing, how you will handle it.\n\nP2 Baseline (depends on: P1)\n- Before any elaborate method, compute the simplest valid baseline that answers the question (for example a naïve or unconditional estimate), with the same evaluation rule used later. Record it in `out/results.json` under the keys the task requires, or under `baseline_*` keys when the task does not name them.\n\nP3 Method and computation (depends on: P2)\n- Implement the analysis in `out/analysis.py` so that it reads only `data/`, writes `out/results.json` deterministically (fix every random seed you use and record it), and prints nothing that contradicts the written results. Any figure or table must be generated by this script.\n\nP4 Verification (depends on: P3)\n- Re-run `out/analysis.py` from a clean state and confirm it regenerates `out/results.json` with identical values. Record the check in `out/state/phases.json` under P4.\n- Check internal consistency: identities that must hold (for example counts that must add up, standard errors that must be positive, confidence intervals that must contain their estimates, date orderings that must respect the information rules), units, and magnitudes against the baseline. Record every check and its outcome in `out/state/checks.md`. A failed check must be fixed or honestly reported, never silently ignored.\n\nP5 Reporting (depends on: P4)\n- Write `out/report.md` with the sections: Question; Data and exclusions; Method; Results; Uncertainty; Limitations and open issues. Every quantitative statement must cite the key of `out/results.json` it comes from.\n- Write `out/claims.json`: a list of the central claims of your report, each as {\"id\": \"C1\", \"text\": \"...\", \"results_keys\": [\"...\"], \"status\": \"supported\"|\"unsupported\"|\"not_evaluated\", \"caveat\": \"...\"}. Do not state a claim in the report that is not in this ledger.\n- Set the final statuses in `out/state/phases.json`.\n\nSTOPPING RULES\n- Stop and declare the task complete only when every phase P0–P5 is \"passed\" with recorded checks. If a phase is \"blocked\" (missing information, impossible requirement, violated availability rule), stop, set the status, explain in `out/report.md` (section Limitations and open issues) and still write every required file with `null` for values you could not legitimately produce.\n- Do not spend effort on extensions that the task does not require.\n\nRECOVERY RULES\n- Append a short dated entry to `out/state/log.md` after each phase transition and after any important decision, so that work can be resumed by reading `out/state/`.\n- If you discover that an upstream input or decision changed after a downstream phase passed, mark the downstream phases \"stale\" and redo them; do not reuse stale results.\n- If you are interrupted and later resumed, first read `out/state/` and continue from the last consistent state; never re-run expensive steps that already have recorded, unchanged outputs.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. The estimands are the out-of-sample RMSE and MAE of the seasonal-naive forecast and of your model at each horizon, the relative improvement 1 − RMSE_model / RMSE_snaive per horizon, and, at h = 4, the mean loss differential d̄ = mean_t (e²_snaive,t − e²_model,t) with a standard error valid under serial correlation of the loss differential (Diebold–Mariano-type test).\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/cpi_quarterly.csv` — observed data derived from the Bank of Canada Valet series V41690973 (Total CPI, Canada, index 2002 = 100, not seasonally adjusted, monthly; Statistics Canada table 18-10-0004-01); retrieved 2026-10-30 UTC; see `data/README.md` for URL, SHA-256 and terms. The inflation measure is 400·Δln of the quarterly-average CPI, not seasonally adjusted. At h = 4, is the mean squared-error loss differential different from zero once we allow for serial correlation from overlapping forecasts?\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- `data/cpi_quarterly.csv`: 127 rows (`n_input_rows`). The SHA-256 matches the README. `data/cpi_monthly.csv`: 381 rows, read only for provenance. Recomputing the quarterly averages from the monthly file reproduces `cpi_avg` to within 3.3e-7 (see `out/state/data_audit.md`).\n- Exclusions (`out/exclusions.csv`): 1995Q1 is dropped because its inflation value is undefined, leaving 126 → 126 usable quarters. There were no gaps, duplicates or other missing values. Extreme quarters (2008Q4, 2020Q2, 2022Q2) are real data and are kept (`data_issues`).\n- The files run to 2026Q3, past the last origin. Each forecast uses only quarters dated ≤ its origin. Later quarters serve only as realised targets; the last target is 2026-07-01.\n\n## Method\n- **Baseline (snaive):** the forecast for quarter t+h is the inflation value of quarter t+h−4.\n- **Model (`model_name` = sar_aic):** see `model_description`. At each origin, an OLS regression of inflation on a constant, three quarter dummies and p own lags. The lag order p ∈ {0,…,4} is chosen by AIC on a common sample, using only data up to the origin. The data window expands from 1995Q2. Forecasts for h = 2 and 4 are produced by iterating the fitted equation. AIC chose p = 2 for the first 25 origins and p = 1 for the last 15 (`chosen_p_by_origin`). The final estimation sample has 121 observations (`n_analysed`). No randomness is involved (`random_seed` = null).\n- **Evaluation:** RMSE and MAE of errors (actual − forecast) over the 40 origins.\n- **h = 4 test:** d_t = e²_snaive − e²_model, averaged over the 40 origins. The long-run variance uses a rectangular (uniform) kernel with truncation lag h−1 = 3 (`hac_kernel_h4`, `hac_lags_h4`), as in Diebold–Mariano (1995). I fixed this choice before seeing the results and planned to fall back to Bartlett if the variance estimate was not positive; no fallback was needed. The p-value is two-sided against N(0,1).\n\n## Results\n| h | RMSE snaive | RMSE model | MAE snaive | MAE model | 1 − RMSE ratio |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 | 2.849 (`rmse_snaive_h1`) | 2.193 (`rmse_model_h1`) | 2.137 (`mae_snaive_h1`) | 1.519 (`mae_model_h1`) | 0.230 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h1`) |\n| 2 | 2.847 (`rmse_snaive_h2`) | 2.463 (`rmse_model_h2`) | 2.126 (`mae_snaive_h2`) | 1.553 (`mae_model_h2`) | 0.135 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h2`) |\n| 4 | 2.882 (`rmse_snaive_h4`) | 2.343 (`rmse_model_h4`) | 2.181 (`mae_snaive_h4`) | 1.597 (`mae_model_h4`) | 0.187 (`rel_improvement_rmse_h4`) |\n\nAll values are in percentage points of annualised inflation. In this sample the model has lower RMSE and MAE than seasonal-naive at every horizon. At h = 4 the mean loss differential is 2.818 squared pp (`loss_diff_mean_h4`), with a HAC SE of 1.698 (`loss_diff_se_h4`). That gives a DM statistic of 1.66 (`dm_stat_h4`) and a two-sided p-value of 0.097 (`dm_pvalue_h4`). The h = 4 improvement is therefore **not statistically distinguishable from zero at the 5% level**; it is significant only at the 10% level.\n\n## Uncertainty\n- Sensitivity of the h = 4 test (`sensitivity_h4`): Bartlett L=3 gives p = 0.18; Bartlett L=4 gives p = 0.13; Bartlett L=6 gives p = 0.04. The Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold small-sample correction (rectangular L=3, compared with t(39)) gives p = 0.14. The loss differential has negative sample autocorrelation at lags 3–4 (−0.29, −0.41; `out/state/checks.md`), so the SE depends on the kernel and lag. Only one specification (Bartlett L=6, not pre-specified) falls below 5%. Overall, the evidence that the model beats seasonal-naive at h = 4 is weak.\n- A few periods dominate d_t. Origins in 2019–2022 (COVID and the 2022 inflation surge) contribute large positive and negative amounts (by origin year: 2020 +40.7, 2021 −45.7, 2022 +66.7). Excluding origins in 2021–2022 leaves the mean almost unchanged (2.87). These numbers come from the diagnostics in `checks.md`, not from `results.json`.\n- No formal tests were run at h = 1 or h = 2. The RMSE gains at those horizons are point estimates only.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- Errors are measured on the current data vintage. The results make no claim about real-time performance.\n- With 40 overlapping forecasts the DM test is a rough approximation, and its outcome depends on the HAC choices (see Uncertainty).\n- Only one model specification was tried, so there is no data-snooping across models. The model class itself (seasonal-dummy AR) was chosen by me and was not tuned on the evaluation period.\n- The task is complete (`feasibility` = \"complete\").\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The seasonal AR model (sar_aic) has lower out-of-sample RMSE than seasonal-naive at h=1, 2 and 4 (relative improvements 0.230, 0.135, 0.187).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rmse_snaive_h1\",\"rmse_model_h2\",\"rmse_snaive_h2\",\"rmse_model_h4\",\"rmse_snaive_h4\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h2\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimates over 40 origins; no significance test at h=1,2; current vintage data.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C2\",\"text\":\"The model also has lower MAE than seasonal-naive at all three horizons.\",\"results_keys\":[\"mae_model_h1\",\"mae_snaive_h1\",\"mae_model_h2\",\"mae_snaive_h2\",\"mae_model_h4\",\"mae_snaive_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimates only.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C3\",\"text\":\"At h=4 the mean squared-error loss differential (2.82, SE 1.70, rectangular HAC lag 3) is not statistically distinguishable from zero at the 5% level (DM=1.66, p=0.097).\",\"results_keys\":[\"loss_diff_mean_h4\",\"loss_diff_se_h4\",\"hac_lags_h4\",\"hac_kernel_h4\",\"dm_stat_h4\",\"dm_pvalue_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Conclusion sensitive to HAC kernel/lag: p ranges 0.04-0.18 across alternatives in sensitivity_h4; small-sample asymptotics.\"}\n]\nEOF\n~/wp29/venv/bin/python - <<'EOF'\nimport json;p=json.load(open('out/state/phases.json'))\njson.load(open('out/claims.json'))\np['P5']={\"status\":\"passed\",\"checks\":[\"report.md with 6 required sections, numbers cite results.json keys\",\"claims.json valid JSON, 3 claims matching report\"],\"notes\":\"\"}\njson.dump(p,open('out/state/phases.json','w'),indent=1)\nEOF\necho \"- 2026-10-30 P5 passed. The model class itself (seasonal-dummy AR) was chosen by me and was not tuned on the evaluation period.\n- The task is complete (`feasibility` = \"complete\").\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The seasonal AR model (sar_aic) has lower out-of-sample RMSE than seasonal-naive at h=1, 2 and 4 (relative improvements 0.230, 0.135, 0.187).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rmse_snaive_h1\",\"rmse_model_h2\",\"rmse_snaive_h2\",\"rmse_model_h4\",\"rmse_snaive_h4\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h2\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimates over 40 origins; no significance test at h=1,2; current vintage data.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C2\",\"text\":\"The model also has lower MAE than seasonal-naive at all three horizons.\",\"results_keys\":[\"mae_model_h1\",\"mae_snaive_h1\",\"mae_model_h2\",\"mae_snaive_h2\",\"mae_model_h4\",\"mae_snaive_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimates only.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C3\",\"text\":\"At h=4 the mean squared-error loss differential (2.82, SE 1.70, rectangular HAC lag 3) is not statistically distinguishable from zero at the 5% level (DM=1.66, p=0.097).\",\"results_keys\":[\"loss_diff_mean_h4\",\"loss_diff_se_h4\",\"hac_lags_h4\",\"hac_kernel_h4\",\"dm_stat_h4\",\"dm_pvalue_h4\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Conclusion sensitive to HAC kernel/lag: p ranges 0.04-0.18 across alternatives in sensitivity_h4; small-sample asymptotics.\"}\n]\nEOF\n~/wp29/venv/bin/python - <<'EOF'\nimport json;p=json.load(open('out/state/phases.json'))\njson.load(open('out/claims.json'))\np['P5']={\"status\":\"passed\",\"checks\":[\"report.md with 6 required sections, numbers cite results.json keys\",\"claims.json valid JSON, 3 claims matching report\"],\"notes\":\"\"}\njson.dump(p,open('out/state/phases.json','w'),indent=1)\nEOF\necho \"- 2026-10-30 P5 passed. rolling quarterly origins, 2015-10-01 to 2025-07-01 (`n_origins`, `first_origin`, `last_origin`), does a time-series model forecast Canadian quarterly CPI inflation better than the seasonal-naive forecast at horizons 1, 2 and 4? The Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold small-sample correction (rectangular L=3, compared with t(39)) gives p = 0.14. model beat the seasonal-naive forecast at all three horizons, but at 4 quarters ahead the gain is not statistically significant at the 5% level (p = 0.097). All phases P0–P5 are complete, and re-running `out/analysis.py` from scratch reproduces the results exactly.\n\nThe model is a seasonal autoregression: a regression of inflation on a constant, three quarter dummies and 0–4 of its own past values. At each origin, the number of past values is chosen by AIC (a standard model-selection criterion) using only data up to that origin. Longer horizons come from applying the fitted equation repeatedly.\n\nErrors are in percentage points of annualised inflation, over the 40 origins:\n\n| Horizon | RMSE seasonal-naive | RMSE model | RMSE improvement |\n|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 quarter | 2.85 | 2.19 | 23% |\n| 2 quarters | 2.85 | 2.46 | 13.5% |\n| 4 quarters | 2.88 | 2.34 | 18.7% |\n\nMAE is also lower for the model at every horizon.\n\n**Significance test at 4 quarters:**\n- **Main result:** the mean difference in squared errors is 2.82 (positive means the model is better), with a standard error of 1.70. That gives a test statistic of 1.66 and a two-sided p-value of 0.097.\n- **Error method:** the standard error uses a uniform weighting of autocorrelations up to lag 3, which allows for the overlap between consecutive 4-quarter forecasts. I fixed this choice before seeing any results.\n- **Sensitivity:** with other reasonable settings the p-value ranges from 0.04 to 0.18; only one, which I had not planned in advance, falls below 0.05. A small-sample correction gives 0.14. So the evidence at 4 quarters is weak.\n\n**Data and checks:**\n- The data were clean and matched their published checksums. The only exclusion was 1995Q1, which has no inflation value.\n- A test confirmed that changing data after an origin does not change that origin's forecasts.\n\n**Limitations:**\n- The results use today's data, not what was available at each origin, so they say nothing about real-time performance.\n- With only 40 overlapping forecasts the test is a rough approximation.\n- Origins from 2019 to 2022 (COVID and the 2022 inflation surge) drive most of the 4-quarter differential, both for and against the model. Leaving out the 2021–22 origins barely changes the average (2.87 instead of 2.82). This breakdown comes from my verification checks, not from `results.json`.\n- I did not run significance tests at 1 or 2 quarters, so those gains are point estimates only.\n\nFiles are in `out/`:\n- `results.json`\n- `forecasts.csv` (240 rows)\n- `report.md`\n- `claims.json`\n- `analysis.py`\n- `exclusions.csv`\n- `state/` (contract, data audit, checks, log, phase ledger)"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":257,"cache_read_input_tokens":23537,"output_tokens":1057,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":64},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":257},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXnZeeWBSJDYbyKzwh3k","requestRef":"2cc2cf49-c791-4e6d-8dda-7a5dd9468e9e","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"67fb0c53-f64a-4997-a2ff-d0965241b0ce","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:25:22.508Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0080","sessionId":"ddff85d2-de09-4865-924d-eb5ab5144ead","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}71{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin","leafUuid":"67fb0c53-f64a-4997-a2ff-d0965241b0ce","sessionId":"ddff85d2-de09-4865-924d-eb5ab5144ead"}72{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"ddff85d2-de09-4865-924d-eb5ab5144ead","totalCostUSD":0.44465460000000007,"totalAPIDuration":131974,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":131967,"totalToolDuration":2152,"totalLinesAdded":1,"totalLinesRemoved":1,"totalDuration":134270,"startTime":1793334188264,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":24,"outputTokens":15250,"thinkingTokens":1473,"cacheReadInputTokens":140543,"cacheCreationInputTokens":22290,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":22290,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.44465460000000007}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}73
