It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md`.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. > out/report.md <<'EOF'\n# F3-conf-04 — Multi-horizon forecasts of Canadian quarterly CPI inflation\n\n## Question\nOver 40 rolling origins (2015Q4–2025Q3), does a seasonal autoregression forecast Canadian quarterly CPI inflation (annualised, NSA) better than the seasonal-naive forecast at h = 1, 2, 4? And at h = 4, is the mean squared-error loss differential different from zero once we allow for the serial correlation that overlapping 4-step errors create?\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- `data/cpi_quarterly.csv`: 127 rows read (1995Q1–2026Q3). `data/cpi_monthly.csv`: 381 rows read. I used it only to check provenance: rebuilding `infl_annualised` from the monthly file matches the given series to within 5e-7.\n- The quarters run in an unbroken sequence and nothing is missing apart from 1995Q1 inflation, which cannot be computed because there is no earlier quarter. I dropped that row, so the usable series is 1995Q2 onward (126 observations).\n- Targets run from 2016Q1 to 2026Q3. Nothing else was excluded.\n\n## Method\n- **Model (`ar_seas_aic`)**: OLS of y_t on a constant, Q2/Q3/Q4 dummies and p own lags. At each origin p ∈ {0,…,4} is chosen by AIC, comparing all lag lengths on the same sample. The model is then re-estimated on all usable observations from 1995Q2 to the origin (expanding window). Multi-step forecasts are iterated, using the known seasonal dummies of the target quarters. Every estimation and selection step uses only quarters ≤ origin. AIC chose p = 2 for origins up to 2021Q3 and p = 1 after that. The last estimation sample has 121 observations.\n- **Seasonal naive**: the forecast for quarter t+h is y in quarter t+h−4.\n- **Metrics**: RMSE and MAE of the 40 errors per horizon, and relative RMSE improvement 1 − RMSE_model/RMSE_snaive.\n- **DM test at h = 4**: d_t = e²_snaive − e²_model. The standard error of d̄ uses a Newey–West (Bartlett kernel) long-run variance with truncation lag 3 (= h − 1), and the p-value is two-sided from N(0,1). I fixed this specification before seeing any results. Sensitivity checks are in `out/sensitivity.json`, which `analysis.py` also writes.\n\n## Results\n| h | RMSE snaive | RMSE model | MAE snaive | MAE model | rel. RMSE improvement |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 | 2.849 | 2.193 | 2.137 | 1.519 | 0.230 |\n| 2 | 2.847 | 2.463 | 2.126 | 1.553 | 0.135 |\n| 4 | 2.882 | 2.343 | 2.181 | 1.597 | 0.187 |\n\n(Units: percentage points, annualised.) At all three horizons the model has lower RMSE and lower MAE than the seasonal-naive forecast.\n\nAt h = 4: d̄ = 2.818 squared pp, HAC SE = 2.086 (Bartlett, lag 3), DM = 1.35, two-sided p = 0.177. **The h = 4 improvement is not statistically distinguishable from zero at conventional levels.**\n\n## Uncertainty\n- How strong the h = 4 evidence looks depends on how the long-run variance is estimated:\n - Bartlett lag 4: DM 1.52, p = 0.13.\n - Rectangular lag 3: DM 1.66, p = 0.097.\n - Bartlett lag 6: DM 2.04, p = 0.041.\n - Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold small-sample correction with t(39): p = 0.23.\n- Only the longest lag (6) falls below 5%. That result is a post-hoc sensitivity check and should not replace the pre-specified test. With 40 overlapping errors the long-run variance is imprecisely estimated.\n- Descriptive DM tests at shorter horizons give p ≈ 0.10 at h = 1 and p ≈ 0.42 at h = 2.\n- The 2021–2023 inflation surge dominates the losses. Dropping h = 4 targets in 2021–2023 (28 origins remain) gives RMSE 2.03 for snaive and 1.52 for the model, so the model's ranking stays the same.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- I picked one model before looking at the evaluation results; I did not search over specifications. Other models might do better or worse.\n- Errors are computed on the current data vintage, so I make no claim about real-time performance. In reality the data are published about three weeks after quarter-end, and the CPI basket is periodically updated.\n- 40 origins is a small sample. The DM test relies on asymptotic approximations, and the standard error is sensitive to the kernel and lag choice.\n- The DM test treats forecasts as given. At the 4-quarter horizon, though, the gain is not statistically distinguishable from zero once the overlapping errors are accounted for (p = 0.177). All required files are in `out/`, and re-running `out/analysis.py` gave identical results.\n\n**The model (`ar_seas_aic`):** a least-squares regression of inflation on a constant, quarterly seasonal dummies and 0–4 of its own past values. At each origin the number of past values is chosen by AIC (a standard fit criterion). Each origin re-fits the model using only data up to that origin, and longer horizons are built by chaining one-step forecasts. I chose this one model before seeing any results and did not try alternatives.\n\n| Horizon | RMSE, seasonal naive | RMSE, model | RMSE improvement | MAE, seasonal naive | MAE, model |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 quarter | 2.85 | 2.19 | 23% | 2.14 | 1.52 |\n| 2 quarters | 2.85 | 2.46 | 13% | 2.13 | 1.55 |\n| 4 quarters | 2.88 | 2.34 | 19% | 2.18 | 1.60 |\n\nErrors are in percentage points of annualised inflation.\n\n**Test at 4 quarters:**\n- **Main result:** the average loss difference in the model's favour is 2.82 (squared percentage points), with a standard error of 2.09. That gives a test statistic of 1.35 and p = 0.177.\n- **Specification:** the standard error uses a Newey–West estimator (Bartlett kernel) with a lag of 3, the minimum the task allows. I fixed this before seeing results.\n- **Sensitivity:** the conclusion depends on how the standard error is computed:\n\n| Alternative | p-value |\n|---|---|\n| Lag 4 | 0.13 |\n| Equal weighting of lags (rectangular kernel), lag 3 | 0.097 |\n| Small-sample correction (Harvey–Leybourne–Newbold) | 0.23 |\n| Lag 6 | 0.041 |\n\n Lag 6 is the only version below 5%, and it was a check I added afterwards, so it shouldn't replace the main result.\n- **2021–2023:** the inflation surge accounts for much of the error. Dropping those target quarters leaves 28 origins, and the model still does better (RMSE 1.52 vs 2.03).\n\n**Data:** the only gap is the missing 1995Q1 inflation value (there is no earlier quarter), so the series starts in 1995Q2. Rebuilding the quarterly series from the monthly file matches the given values to within 5e-7.\n\n**Limitations:**\n- Forecasts use today's data, not what was published at the time, so they make no claim about real-time performance.\n- With only 40 origins, the test relies on large-sample approximations, which makes the standard error unstable.\n- The test doesn't account for uncertainty in the model's estimated parameters.\n\n**Files** (all in `out/`):\n- `results.json`\n- `forecasts.csv` (240 rows)\n- `report.md`\n- `claims.json`\n- `analysis.py`\n- `sensitivity.json` – an extra file with the robustness checks"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":226,"cache_read_input_tokens":14623,"output_tokens":1121,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":5},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":226},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXncXnaygL3Zz45C1LyF","requestRef":"079ba3de-fb50-4e85-844e-2ab15c129179","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"ef836e17-0e04-43c4-8b61-d8369ff98cb6","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:26:01.742Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0083","sessionId":"814de002-3f98-485a-bc50-5a0ac58ebbfe","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}45{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin","leafUuid":"ef836e17-0e04-43c4-8b61-d8369ff98cb6","sessionId":"814de002-3f98-485a-bc50-5a0ac58ebbfe"}46{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"814de002-3f98-485a-bc50-5a0ac58ebbfe","totalCostUSD":0.24367919999999998,"totalAPIDuration":74222,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":74217,"totalToolDuration":2886,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":77313,"startTime":1793334284438,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":16,"outputTokens":8313,"thinkingTokens":630,"cacheReadInputTokens":53151,"cacheCreationInputTokens":13345,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":13345,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.24367919999999998}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}47
