It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md`.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. Report sampling uncertainty that matches the design: treatment was assigned to whole schools, and students in the same school share school-level shocks. Then test H0: τ = 0 at the 5% level, two-sided.\n\n## Data and exclusions\n`data/schools.csv` has 1000 rows: 40 schools with 25 students each, 20 of them treated. The data are simulated. Checks run: no missing values, no duplicate `student_id`, `treated` constant within every school, balanced school sizes. No problems were found and no rows were excluded (n_analysed = 1000).\n\n## Method\n- **Point estimate:** OLS of `score` on `treated` with an intercept, using all students.\n- **Naïve baseline (`se_iid`):** the conventional OLS standard error, which assumes independent, homoskedastic errors.\n- **Main SE (`se_cluster`):** a cluster-robust (Liang–Zeger) sandwich SE clustered by `school_id`, with the CR1 small-sample correction G/(G−1)·(N−1)/(N−K). Tests and the 95% CI use a t distribution with G−1 = 39 degrees of freedom, a standard adjustment when there are few clusters.\n- **Cross-check:** a two-sample t-test on the 40 school means. With balanced schools this gives the same point estimate and is an exact analogue of the cluster analysis.\n- **ICC:** a one-way ANOVA (method-of-moments) estimator applied to the OLS residuals, so the treatment effect is removed first. Between-school mean square uses G−2 df; within-school mean square uses N−G df.\n\n## Results\n| quantity | value |\n|---|---|\n| τ̂ | 0.961 points |\n| SE, iid (naïve) | 0.282 |\n| SE, cluster-robust (CR1) | 0.729 |\n| t (cluster), df = 39 | 1.32 |\n| p-value (cluster) | 0.195 |\n| 95% CI (cluster) | [−0.513, 2.436] |\n| residual ICC | 0.240 |\n| design effect 1+(m−1)ICC | 6.77 |\n\nTreated schools score about 0.96 points higher on average, but **this difference is not statistically significant at the 5% level** under design-valid inference (p = 0.195), and the 95% CI includes zero.\n\n## Uncertainty\nThe cluster-robust SE is 2.58 times the naïve iid SE. About 24% of residual variance lies between schools, so 25 students in one school carry much less independent information than 25 students drawn at random. A rough design-effect argument (√6.77 ≈ 2.6) agrees with the observed SE ratio.\n\nThe naïve analysis would give p ≈ 0.0007 and wrongly declare a highly significant effect. That result is an artefact of treating 1000 correlated students as independent observations. In effect the sample size for inference is 40 schools.\n\nThe school-means t-test gives SE 0.738 and p = 0.201, which agrees with the cluster result.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- With G = 40 clusters (20 per arm), cluster-robust SEs can be somewhat biased downward. The t(39) reference and the CR1 correction reduce this, and the school-means t-test agrees closely. No wild-cluster bootstrap was run, so no random seed was used.\n- The ICC is a method-of-moments estimate from a modest number of schools, so it is itself imprecise.\n- \"Not significant\" does not show that the effect is zero. The CI runs from about −0.5 to +2.4 points, so moderate positive effects are still possible.\n- The estimand is the student-weighted difference in means. With equal school sizes this is the same as the school-weighted difference.\n- The data are simulated.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"The estimated programme effect is 0.96 points (treated minus control student-weighted mean score).\",\"results_keys\":[\"tau_hat\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Point estimate only; imprecise.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C2\",\"text\":\"At the 5% level, with school-clustered (CR1, t with 39 df) inference, the data do not support a non-zero programme effect (p = 0.195; 95% CI [-0.51, 2.44]).\",\"results_keys\":[\"effect_significant_5pct\",\"p_value\",\"tau_ci_low\",\"tau_ci_high\",\"se_cluster\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Failure to reject is not evidence of no effect; moderate positive effects remain compatible with the data.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C3\",\"text\":\"The naive iid standard error (0.28) understates uncertainty by a factor of about 2.6 compared with the cluster-robust SE (0.73), and would wrongly suggest a highly significant effect.\",\"results_keys\":[\"se_iid\",\"se_cluster\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"With 40 clusters the cluster SE may itself be slightly too small.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C4\",\"text\":\"About 24% of residual score variance is between schools (ICC = 0.24).\",\"results_keys\":[\"icc_hat\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"ANOVA estimator from 40 schools; imprecise.\"}\n]\nEOF\n~/wp29/venv/bin/python -c \"import json;json.load(open('out/claims.json'))\"; ls out","description":"Write report and claims"},"caller":{"type":"direct"}}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"tool_use","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":640,"cache_read_input_tokens":6948,"output_tokens":2035,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":32},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":640},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":2,"requestId":"req_011CgXoJkBLdd361wkTvR37L","requestRef":"ea557092-54f9-4307-ac8b-027e0c0b4ec5","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"e00563c0-11ff-4888-b1dd-e67d9e260b03","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:35:17.468Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0113","sessionId":"25df609b-038a-44c5-85e5-81c9a522a6ff","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}36{"parentUuid":"e00563c0-11ff-4888-b1dd-e67d9e260b03","isSidechain":false,"promptId":"19870cae-1c14-45a4-9365-a10cdea7a7f4","type":"user","message":{"role":"user","content":[{"tool_use_id":"toolu_01Li9s7SDZF8QyEYiQ26nbj5","type":"tool_result","content":"analysis.py\nclaims.json\nreport.md\nresults.json","is_error":false}]},"uuid":"2a764000-74a4-40bb-adf1-61a8072e4e07","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:35:17.542Z","toolUseResult":{"stdout":"analysis.py\nclaims.json\nreport.md\nresults.json","stderr":"","interrupted":false,"isImage":false,"noOutputExpected":false},"sandboxed":false,"sourceToolAssistantUUID":"e00563c0-11ff-4888-b1dd-e67d9e260b03","permissionDecision":{"decision":"accept","source":"config","reasonType":"rule","ruleSource":"cliArg"},"userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0113","sessionId":"25df609b-038a-44c5-85e5-81c9a522a6ff","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}37{"type":"api-request-blob","sessionId":"25df609b-038a-44c5-85e5-81c9a522a6ff","hash":"4fd82bb51bd48765d588b8ba718ba6c2273e92113617331fb6dddcd96e693b03","message":{"role":"assistant","content":[{"type":"thinking","thinking":"","signature":"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"},{"type":"text","text":"The cluster-robust SE is 2.6 times the naïve one, and the effect is not significant. Students in treated schools score about 0.96 points higher on average, but the 95% confidence interval (−0.51 to 2.44 points) includes zero.\n\n| | value |\n|---|---|\n| Estimated effect | 0.961 points |\n| Standard error, naïve (students treated as independent) | 0.282 |\n| Standard error, clustered by school (main measure) | 0.729 |\n| p-value (clustered) | 0.195 |\n| 95% interval (clustered) | −0.51 to 2.44 |\n| Share of leftover score variation that lies between schools | 0.24 |\n\n- **Why the naïve analysis misleads:** about a quarter of the variation not explained by the programme sits between schools. This makes the standard error about 2.6 times larger than the naïve one. The naïve analysis gives p ≈ 0.0007, which would wrongly suggest a highly significant effect. In effect the test has 40 schools' worth of information, not 1000 students'.\n- **Cross-check:** comparing the 40 school averages directly gives nearly the same answer (standard error 0.738, p = 0.201).\n- **Data:** 1000 students in 40 schools of 25 each, 20 schools treated. The checks found no problems, so all rows were used.\n\nLimitations:\n- With only 40 schools, the clustered standard error may still be slightly too small. I used a small-sample correction and a t distribution with 39 degrees of freedom to offset this. I did not run a bootstrap, so no random seed was used.\n- The between-school share (0.24) is estimated from 40 schools, so it is itself imprecise.\n- Not rejecting zero doesn't show the effect is zero: moderate positive effects up to about 2.4 points are still consistent with the data.\n- The data are simulated.\n\nRe-running `out/analysis.py` from the workspace root reproduces `results.json` exactly. The file also has an extra `_diagnostics` entry with the cross-check figures.\n\nFiles are in `out/`:\n- `analysis.py`\n- `results.json`\n- `report.md`\n- `claims.json`"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":2029,"cache_read_input_tokens":7588,"output_tokens":737,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":21},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":2029},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXoLGSnJtMbKbVxMcsgV","requestRef":"86feab63-ef1f-4ae3-adfc-8bd250d297d1","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"2e4caca3-7a1e-4c51-a8fe-017e59175a24","timestamp":"2026-10-30T04:35:24.558Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0113","sessionId":"25df609b-038a-44c5-85e5-81c9a522a6ff","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}43{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin","leafUuid":"2e4caca3-7a1e-4c51-a8fe-017e59175a24","sessionId":"25df609b-038a-44c5-85e5-81c9a522a6ff"}44{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"25df609b-038a-44c5-85e5-81c9a522a6ff","totalCostUSD":0.1474744,"totalAPIDuration":50417,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":50411,"totalToolDuration":1997,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":52587,"startTime":1793334871977,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":14,"outputTokens":5079,"thinkingTokens":142,"cacheReadInputTokens":26367,"cacheCreationInputTokens":8113,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":8113,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.1474744}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}45
