It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md`.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. The estimands are the out-of-sample RMSE and MAE, over a fixed set of 48 rolling (expanding-window) origins and horizons h ∈ {1, 3}, of (a) the naive forecast and (b) one model of your choice, and the relative improvement 1 − RMSE_model / RMSE_naive per horizon.\n\n## Inputs\n- `data/canada_gdp_employment.csv` — observed data (Statistics Canada, current vintage, retrieved 2026-10-30 UTC via the Web Data Service; see `data/README.md` for vectors, URL, SHA-256 and licence). Columns: `month` (YYYY-MM-01), `gdp_level` (monthly real GDP at basic prices, chained 2017 dollars, SA, millions), `gdp_yoy` (target: year-over-year growth of `gdp_level`, percent, 4 decimals), `emp_level` (LFS employment, SA, thousands), `emp_yoy` (predictor: year-over-year employment growth, percent, 4 decimals). 345 monthly rows, 1998-01 to 2026-09; GDP columns are empty after the last published GDP month (2026-07), employment runs to 2026-09.\n\n## Information-availability rules\n- Forecast origins: the 48 months t = 2022-05-01, 2022-06-01, …, 2026-04-01 (identified by their `month` value). The origin is the **end** of month t. Horizons h ∈ {1, 3}; the target of origin t at horizon h is `gdp_yoy` of month t + h.\n- Publication lags (documented in `data/README.md`): monthly GDP for a reference month is published about two months after the end of that month; LFS employment for a reference month is published in the first/second week of the following month. Therefore, at origin t, **the GDP columns are available only for months ≤ t − 2 and the employment columns only for months ≤ t − 1**. A forecast made at origin t (its estimation sample, its model selection, its transformations and the values plugged into the forecast) may use only these observations. Training targets must also be observed at the origin.\n- Naive baseline: for both horizons, the forecast is the most recent GDP growth value available at the origin, i.e. `gdp_yoy` of month t − 2.\n- The errors are computed on the data as given (current vintage); the exercise simulates publication timing, not historical first-release values — do not claim real-time validity.\n\n## Required outputs\n- `out/forecasts.csv` — the forecast ledger, one row per (origin, horizon, model), columns: `origin_date` (YYYY-MM-DD, the `month` of the origin), `target_date`, `horizon` (integer), `forecast`, `actual` (the `gdp_yoy` value of the target month), `model` (`naive` or the value of `model_name`), `last_target_date_used` (YYYY-MM-DD: the latest `gdp_yoy` month entering the forecast, estimation included), `last_predictor_date_used` (YYYY-MM-DD: the latest `emp_yoy` month used, or empty if the model does not use employment). growth of Canadian monthly real GDP at t+1 and t+3 be forecast from what is published at that time? And does a model that adds the more timely LFS employment growth beat the naive forecast (the latest published GDP growth, month t−2)?\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- `data/canada_gdp_employment.csv`: 345 rows (1998-01 to 2026-09). GDP is available to 2026-07 and employment to 2026-09. There are no gaps and no duplicate months. The `gdp_yoy`/`emp_yoy` columns match the level columns to within rounding (max abs diff ≈ 5e-5).\n- Information rule, applied by masking: at origin t, GDP is used only for months ≤ t−2 and employment only for months ≤ t−1. The ledger (`out/forecasts.csv`, 192 rows) records the last GDP and employment month used by every forecast. I checked these columns in code: none goes past the rule. At the last origin (2026-04-01) the latest available GDP month is 2026-02 and the latest available employment month is 2026-03.\n- Exclusion (model estimation only): I dropped training rows whose target or regressor month falls between 2020-03 and 2021-12, because COVID-period swings (GDP y/y ranged from −16.2% to +18.5%) would dominate OLS. This choice relies only on information that was already available at every origin (all origins are 2022-05 or later). The naive forecast and the evaluation sample (targets 2022-06 to 2026-07) are not affected.\n- The data are the current vintage. The exercise simulates publication timing only, not first-release values, so no real-time validity is claimed.\n\n## Method\n- **Naive:** ŷ(t+h) = gdp_yoy(t−2) for h = 1 and h = 3.\n- **Model `ardl_emp_direct`:** a separate direct OLS for each horizon, gdp_yoy(s) = a + b·gdp_yoy(s−h−2) + c·emp_yoy(s−h−1). The window expands from 1998 and includes only targets s ≤ t−2, so every training target is observed at the origin. The model is re-estimated at each origin. The forecast plugs in gdp_yoy(t−2) and emp_yoy(t−1). The lag gaps used in estimation are the same as the publication gaps at forecast time.\n- **Metrics:** RMSE and MAE over the 48 origins per horizon, and relative improvement 1 − RMSE_model/RMSE_naive. As a supplementary check I ran a Diebold–Mariano test (squared loss, HAC with h−1 lags, Harvey small-sample correction, t(47) reference). There is no randomness (`random_seed` = null). At the last origin the training sample has 310 rows for h=1 and 306 for h=3.\n\n## Results (percentage points)\n| | RMSE naive | RMSE model | MAE naive | MAE model | 1 − RMSE ratio |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| h=1 | 0.814 | 0.743 | 0.642 | 0.604 | 0.087 |\n| h=3 | 1.140 | 0.902 | 0.872 | 0.753 | 0.208 |\n\nThe employment-augmented model beats the naive forecast at both horizons on RMSE and MAE: by about 9% in RMSE at h=1 and about 21% at h=3.\n\n## Uncertainty\n- Diebold–Mariano test of equal squared loss: at h=1, DM = −2.03, p ≈ 0.048; at h=3, DM = −1.65, p ≈ 0.105. The h=1 gain is borderline significant at 5%. The larger h=3 gain is not significant, partly because overlapping 3-step errors are autocorrelated and there are only 48 origins.\n- Both methods over-predict on average over the evaluation period: mean error is about +0.30 (naive) and +0.33 (model) at h=1, and +0.46 / +0.47 at h=3. This reflects the post-2022 slowdown in growth. Most of the model's gain comes from lower error variance, not lower bias.\n- Results come from one 4-year evaluation window and may not carry over to other periods.\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- Current-vintage data: GDP and LFS revisions mean that real-time accuracy would probably be worse than shown, and the ranking could change.\n- I specified one model ex ante and did not search over alternatives. I did not run a sensitivity check with the COVID rows kept in the training sample.\n- The COVID exclusion window (2020-03 to 2021-12) is a judgement call.\n- The y/y target overlaps month to month, so the 48 errors are strongly dependent. The effective sample is much smaller than 48.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"At h=1 the employment-augmented direct model lowers RMSE relative to the naive forecast by about 9% (0.743 vs 0.814 pp).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rmse_naive_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"DM p≈0.048, borderline; And does a model that adds the more timely LFS employment growth beat the naive forecast (the latest published GDP growth, month t−2)?\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- `data/canada_gdp_employment.csv`: 345 rows (1998-01 to 2026-09). The effective sample is much smaller than 48.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"At h=1 the employment-augmented direct model lowers RMSE relative to the naive forecast by about 9% (0.743 vs 0.814 pp).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rmse_naive_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"DM p≈0.048, borderline; The gain is only borderline significant one month ahead and not significant three months ahead. All required files are written, and running `out/analysis.py` regenerates the results and the 192-row forecast ledger.\n\n**Model (`ardl_emp_direct`):** a separate least-squares regression for each horizon. It predicts GDP growth from the latest published GDP growth (month t−2) and the latest employment growth (month t−1). It is re-fitted at each of the 48 origins on all history up to that point, using only GDP months that were already published.\n\n**Results** (percentage points, 48 origins):\n\n| Horizon | RMSE naive | RMSE model | MAE naive | MAE model | RMSE improvement |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 month | 0.814 | 0.743 | 0.642 | 0.604 | 8.7% |\n| 3 months | 1.140 | 0.902 | 0.872 | 0.753 | 20.8% |\n\n- **Significance:** a Diebold–Mariano test (an extra check, not required by the task) gives p ≈ 0.048 at 1 month and p ≈ 0.105 at 3 months. The 48 forecast errors overlap and are strongly dependent, so the effective sample is small.\n- **Bias:** both methods over-predict on average (by about 0.3 pp at 1 month and 0.46 pp at 3 months) because growth slowed after 2022. Most of the model's gain comes from less scattered errors, not less bias.\n- **Publication lags:** I checked the ledger in code. No forecast uses GDP later than t−2 or employment later than t−1.\n\n**Limitations:**\n- **COVID exclusion:** I left training rows involving 2020-03 to 2021-12 out of the model's estimation, because those swings (−16% to +18.5%) would dominate the fit. The window is a judgement call, and I did not test how results change if those rows are kept. The naive forecast and the evaluated months are unaffected.\n- **Current-vintage data:** the data include later revisions, so this simulates publication timing only. It makes no claim about how accurate forecasts would have been with the figures available at the time.\n- **One model, one window:** I specified one model in advance without searching alternatives, and evaluated over a single four-year window.\n\nFiles are in `out/`:\n- `results.json`\n- `forecasts.csv`\n- `report.md`\n- `claims.json`\n- `analysis.py`"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":2350,"cache_read_input_tokens":13373,"output_tokens":866,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":32},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":2350},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXqQkCEHxLd4WWV8V17C","requestRef":"b75ca4ff-48e2-4024-82e5-561a9ed96556","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"77b6f204-c041-498c-83f4-81946b0db9cb","timestamp":"2026-10-30T05:02:40.503Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RC0211","sessionId":"013ffe34-9c4d-42ab-8632-724f9faa5b29","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}54{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin","leafUuid":"77b6f204-c041-498c-83f4-81946b0db9cb","sessionId":"013ffe34-9c4d-42ab-8632-724f9faa5b29"}55{"type":"cost-state","sessionId":"013ffe34-9c4d-42ab-8632-724f9faa5b29","totalCostUSD":0.2417012,"totalAPIDuration":72818,"totalAPIDurationWithoutRetries":72812,"totalToolDuration":2231,"totalLinesAdded":0,"totalLinesRemoved":0,"totalDuration":75220,"startTime":1793336485293,"modelUsage":{"claude-opus-5-5":{"inputTokens":18,"outputTokens":7940,"thinkingTokens":822,"cacheReadInputTokens":58671,"cacheCreationInputTokens":14219,"cacheCreationEphemeral5mInputTokens":14219,"cacheCreationEphemeral1hInputTokens":0,"webSearchRequests":0,"costUSD":0.2417012}},"hasUnknownModelCost":false}56
