It is the complete and only authoritative description of what is required: the scientific question, the inputs under `data/`, the required output files and their exact keys, and the information-availability rules.\n- There is no network access. Use the Python interpreter `~/wp29/venv/bin/python` (numpy, pandas, scipy, statsmodels, matplotlib are installed). Standard shell tools are available. Do not try to install packages.\n- Write every deliverable under `./out/`. The required deliverables are listed in `TASK.md`; at minimum they always include `out/results.json`, `out/report.md`, and a replication entry point `out/analysis.py` that regenerates `out/results.json` from `data/` when run with `~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py` from the workspace root.\n- You are working alone and unattended; nobody will answer questions. Make reasonable, documented decisions.\n\nIntegrity rules (identical for every task):\n- Never fabricate numbers, data, results, or references. Every number in `out/results.json` and `out/report.md` must be produced by code you ran on the provided inputs.\n- Respect the information-availability rules in `TASK.md` exactly (for example, never use information that would not have been available at the stated decision time).\n- If part of the task cannot be completed as specified, say so explicitly in `out/report.md`, explain why, and still write every required file (use `null` for values you could not legitimately produce). An honest statement of a limitation is always preferred to a fabricated or guessed value.\n- Do not modify anything under `data/`.\n- When you are done, end with a brief plain-text summary of what you produced and any limitations.\n\nComplete the task described in `TASK.md`.\n"}],"tools":[{"name":"Bash","description":"execute shell commands","input_schema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"command":{"description":"The command to execute","type":"string"},"timeout":{"description":"Optional timeout in milliseconds (max 600000 for a foreground command)","type":"number"},"description":{"description":"Clear, concise description of what this command does in active voice. We measure this with RMSE, MAE and 1 − RMSE_model/RMSE_naive.\n\n## Data and exclusions\n- `data/UNRATE.csv`: 945 data rows, 1948-01 to 2026-09, no gaps in the month sequence. This is the final vintage, not real-time data.\n- One value is missing: **2025-10-01** (empty field). How it was handled:\n - Pairs whose target is 2025-10 are kept in `out/forecasts.csv` with an empty `actual` and left out of the error statistics. These are origin 2025-09 at h=1 and origin 2025-07 at h=3. That leaves **35 evaluated pairs per horizon** (out of 36).\n - At origin 2025-10, the naive forecast is the 2025-09 value. The AR forecast is iterated forward from 2025-09: 2 steps for h=1 and 4 steps for h=3.\n - For origins from 2025-11 on, the missing month falls inside the training window. It is filled by linear interpolation between 2025-09 and 2025-11, both of which are dated ≤ origin, and used only for AR estimation.\n- No other exclusions. The 2020 COVID spike stays in the estimation sample.\n\n## Method\n- **Naive:** the forecast is the latest observation dated ≤ origin, for every horizon.\n- **Model `AR2_diff`:** an AR(2) with intercept on monthly first differences, estimated by OLS on all data from 1948 up to the origin. Multi-step forecasts are iterated and summed back to levels. I fixed this specification before seeing any out-of-sample results and did no model search, so nothing was tuned on the evaluation period.\n - The training window is re-estimated at every origin and uses only data ≤ origin.\n - The last window (origin 2026-06) has 942 level observations (`n_analysed`), which gives 939 regression observations.\n- Errors are computed as forecast − actual. No randomness is involved (`random_seed` = null).\n- As a supplementary check I ran a Diebold–Mariano test: squared-error loss, HAC variance with h−1 Bartlett lags, t(n−1) reference. Output is in `out/dm_tests.json`.\n\n## Results\n| horizon | n | RMSE naive | RMSE AR2_diff | MAE naive | MAE AR2_diff | 1 − RMSE ratio |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 | 35 | 0.1171 | 0.1199 | 0.0914 | 0.0957 | −0.0235 |\n| 3 | 35 | 0.1586 | 0.1597 | 0.1200 | 0.1212 | −0.0074 |\n\n(Units: percentage points.) **The AR(2) model does not beat the naive forecast at either horizon.** Its RMSE is about 2.3% higher at h=1 and 0.7% higher at h=3, and its MAE is also slightly higher at both horizons.\n\n## Uncertainty\n- Diebold–Mariano, model minus naive squared loss:\n - h=1: DM = 2.54, p ≈ 0.016. The naive forecast is better, and the difference is small but nominally significant.\n - h=3: DM = 1.70, p ≈ 0.098, which is not significant at 5%.\n- The sample is only 35 pairs per horizon, and the h=3 errors overlap. The series is rounded to 0.1 pp, so many errors are exact multiples of 0.1 for the naive forecast.\n- I did no correction for nested-model comparisons (e.g. Clark–West). That correction would make the AR model look relatively better, so the conclusion should read \"no evidence the AR model improves on naive\", not \"the AR model is definitively worse\".\n\n## Limitations and open issues\n- The evaluation uses final-vintage data (with revised seasonal factors), so it does not measure real-time performance.\n- Only one model specification was evaluated. Other choices (a shorter estimation window, excluding or dummying COVID, different lags) might do differently. They were not explored, to avoid selecting on the test period.\n- The estimated AR forecasts stay very close to no-change (differences of about 0.01 pp), because the unemployment rate changed little over 2023–2026. The results reflect that calm period only.\n- The interpolated 2025-10 value enters estimation for later origins. Its effect on the coefficients is negligible given about 940 observations, but it is an imputation.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"At the 1-month horizon the AR(2)-on-differences model has higher RMSE than the naive forecast (relative improvement -0.023).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_naive_h1\",\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"35 evaluated pairs; They were not explored, to avoid selecting on the test period.\n- The estimated AR forecasts stay very close to no-change (differences of about 0.01 pp), because the unemployment rate changed little over 2023–2026. The results reflect that calm period only.\n- The interpolated 2025-10 value enters estimation for later origins. Its effect on the coefficients is negligible given about 940 observations, but it is an imputation.\nEOF\ncat > out/claims.json <<'EOF'\n[\n {\"id\":\"C1\",\"text\":\"At the 1-month horizon the AR(2)-on-differences model has higher RMSE than the naive forecast (relative improvement -0.023).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_naive_h1\",\"rmse_model_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"35 evaluated pairs; final-vintage data.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C2\",\"text\":\"At the 3-month horizon the AR(2) model is also marginally worse than naive in RMSE (relative improvement -0.007).\",\"results_keys\":[\"rmse_naive_h3\",\"rmse_model_h3\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h3\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Difference not significant at 5% by Diebold-Mariano (p~0.10); overlapping errors.\"},\n {\"id\":\"C3\",\"text\":\"The AR(2) model's MAE is slightly higher than the naive MAE at both horizons.\",\"results_keys\":[\"mae_naive_h1\",\"mae_model_h1\",\"mae_naive_h3\",\"mae_model_h3\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Small differences (<0.005 pp).\"},\n {\"id\":\"C4\",\"text\":\"One target month (2025-10) is missing, leaving 35 evaluated pairs per horizon.\",\"results_keys\":[\"n_evaluated_h1\",\"n_evaluated_h3\",\"data_issues\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"\"},\n {\"id\":\"C5\",\"text\":\"The simple AR model does not beat the naive forecast over 2023-07 to 2026-06 origins.\",\"results_keys\":[\"rel_improvement_rmse_h1\",\"rel_improvement_rmse_h3\"],\"status\":\"supported\",\"caveat\":\"Single pre-specified model; no nested-model (Clark-West) adjustment; calm period.\"}\n]\nEOF\n~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py >/dev/null && md5sum out/results.json && ~/wp29/venv/bin/python out/analysis.py >/dev/null && md5sum out/results.json; ls out"}}]}}31{"type":"api-request","sessionId":"192452a9-1297-44ce-9abb-e06db1f842f4","id":"4c2cc105-4d69-41b2-8d9c-3505e7d6f5e8","timestamp":"2026-10-30T06:01:47.663Z","version":"2.1.314","querySource":"sdk","shapeHash":"d80092ff72d5b34f1d78353410f5c47d731429bee2fdf34e67cbd5487c84f0cb","params":{"model":"claude-opus-5-5","betas":["claude-code-20250219","interleaved-thinking-2025-05-14","context-management-2025-06-27","prompt-caching-scope-2026-01-05","per-turn-control-2026-07-01","thinking-token-count-2026-05-13","mid-conversation-system-clear-at-2026-08-21","effort-2025-11-24","thinking-binding-controls-2026-08-01","thinking-display-updates-2026-08-18","cache-diagnosis-2026-04-07"],"max_tokens":128000,"thinking":{"type":"adaptive","display":"updates"},"context_management":{"edits":[{"type":"clear_thinking_20251015","keep":"all"}]},"output_config":{"effort":"medium"}},"base":"0f4dbd9d-9584-495b-b54e-ca3922b135c3","keep":8,"tail":["f47b9ccc79818975904e63d40dec76616a07663bee6bde667c6823918e4631b5","9a940c0e399c90cac262ce550e0fcd7e25df297239c3a7abfb9408745ff1a069"],"cacheControl":[{"path":["system",0],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}},{"path":["system",1],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}},{"path":["messages",9,"content",0],"value":{"type":"ephemeral"}}],"requestDigest":"a83c3b44636e249f87d879710286a276f964d4439e777cf4dbab723228bdbb19"}32{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin now. I used an AR(2) model with an intercept, fitted by least squares to monthly changes in the unemployment rate on all data from 1948 up to each forecast date. I fixed that specification before looking at any test results.\n\nOver the 36 forecast dates (2023-07 to 2026-06), with errors in percentage points:\n\n| Horizon | Pairs scored | RMSE naive | RMSE model | MAE naive | MAE model | Improvement (1 − RMSE ratio) |\n|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|\n| 1 month | 35 | 0.1171 | 0.1199 | 0.0914 | 0.0957 | −0.023 |\n| 3 months | 35 | 0.1586 | 0.1597 | 0.1200 | 0.1212 | −0.007 |\n\n- **Significance:** I also ran a Diebold–Mariano test comparing the two forecasts' squared errors. The naive forecast is slightly better at 1 month (p ≈ 0.016). At 3 months the difference is not significant (p ≈ 0.10).\n- **Why the gap is so small:** the model's forecasts stay within about 0.01 points of the naive ones, because the rate barely moved over 2023–2026. The result describes that calm period only.\n- **Missing month:** the value for 2025-10 is empty in the file. The two forecasts aimed at that month stay in the forecast table with no actual value and are left out of the error figures, which is why 35 pairs are scored per horizon instead of 36. For the 2025-10 forecast date, both forecasts start from the 2025-09 value. For later dates, the gap is filled by straight-line interpolation using only data available at that date.\n- **Repeatability:** `out/analysis.py` regenerates `results.json` and `forecasts.csv`; I ran it twice and got an identical `results.json`.\n\n**Limitations:**\n- The data is the final revised series, so this does not measure how the forecasts would have done in real time.\n- I tested only one model, on purpose, to avoid picking whichever happened to do best on the test period.\n- The significance test has no adjustment for comparing a model against a simpler one it contains. That adjustment would favour the model, so the fair reading is \"no evidence it improves on naive\", not \"definitely worse\".\n- Only 35 pairs per horizon are scored, and the published figures are rounded to 0.1 points.\n\nFiles are in `out/`:\n- `results.json`\n- `forecasts.csv` (144 rows)\n- `report.md`\n- `claims.json`\n- `analysis.py`\n- `dm_tests.json` (the significance test, an extra file)"}],"container":null,"stop_reason":"end_turn","stop_sequence":null,"stop_details":null,"usage":{"input_tokens":2,"cache_creation_input_tokens":2583,"cache_read_input_tokens":9879,"output_tokens":910,"output_tokens_details":{"thinking_tokens":23},"server_tool_use":{"web_search_requests":0,"web_fetch_requests":0},"service_tier":"standard","cache_creation":{"ephemeral_1h_input_tokens":0,"ephemeral_5m_input_tokens":2583},"inference_geo":"global","iterations":[],"speed":"standard","fallback_credit":null},"input_transformations":[],"diagnostics":null,"context_management":null},"apiBlockIndex":1,"requestId":"req_011CgXuvr8yBMAxGrbbiSUgm","requestRef":"4c2cc105-4d69-41b2-8d9c-3505e7d6f5e8","requestedModel":"claude-opus-5-5","type":"assistant","uuid":"74abcd32-7229-4160-9065-af8d98cb5127","timestamp":"2026-10-30T06:01:57.194Z","effort":"medium","perTurnEffort":"medium","userType":"external","entrypoint":"sdk-cli","cwd":"/Users/simon-pierreboucher/wp29/runs/RR0017","sessionId":"192452a9-1297-44ce-9abb-e06db1f842f4","version":"2.1.314","gitBranch":"HEAD"}36{"type":"last-prompt","lastPrompt":"Begin now.
